I see a number of similarities in our styles there. We both play bass, have beards and are overweight (him much more so) and I like to wear t-shirts when I am playing.
Other than that I am now serverely depressed!!!!
Lol A40Bush.

A query: does the bass player in Stranglers, the French equivalent of Isembard Kingdom Brunel or something, tune his guitar an octave lower to get that low, vibratty, slightly flat sound? Or is it just strings or something?

I look back now and he looks quite cool although I didn't think so then. He said that he used to wear all the fancy clothes on stage so when he went back home to Scotland he thought nothing of it because it was the usual sort of dress for the circles that he hung round in until he offered to go shopping with his wife and she looked him up and down and told him in no uncertain terms that there was no way she was going out with him where they lived looking like that
Yeah. He'd deffo stand out in Dunfermline High Street.
Although a few years later that never bothered Ricky Jobson of the Skids. I used to see him wandering round town in his massive baggy electri c blue suit or standing on the terraces at East End Park.

Anyway, some old Clash...
I was wondering. We need Qprmuso or one of his mates to explain.
But one reason I think JJB's base stand out so much is that it's very prominent in the mix and there's no lead guitar, really, just rythm. What you hear is lots of keyboards, bass and vocals. The guitar falls back to where the bass might be in a more conventional mix.

My theory, anyway.
Hi Scottish, My view is it's a little bit about the mix but more about the unconventional bass rhythm he is playing which makes it a contributor to the melody overall.

Actually you're spot on - having listened again to to a couple of songs he's doing loads more than just filling in bass parts in the background.

I'd never listened hard/thought about it before.
Getting back to my original question...
Have a listen to the bass on this one that Scotty posted. The first few bars are enough. The pitch of the notes seems diminished, unprecise. The notes also seem to have a damped, vibratty sound and finish abruptily. Both these characteristics sound to me like a string with reduced tension. So...lowered tuning? Special strings? Lighter finger pressure at the frets? Any ideas welcome.

Just thought I would share this fine example of how a properly decent bass player needs not just to be able to play a few notes and stand at the back chatting to the drummer but when called upon has to have the "balls" to get up front with the boss.

Getting kinda late to the party, but here goes
Can't believe no one's posted Jaco yet, too obvious?
"Can't believe no one's posted Jaco yet, too obvious?"
No, not too obvious, but you have to ignore Jaco for your sanity.
You see the BIG problem with Jaco is that if you accept in your mind that he is a human being and a "bass player" then it becomes immediately apparent that you yourself are like a one legged blind footballer with a broken spine when compared with Lionel Messi.
Far better for ones own sanity to believe that he is (was) a God like Lizard creature from a far away galaxy and that fretless is actually more akin to a bassoon than a bass, so it does not really count as bass playing.

John Wilson, bassist in the early Heaven 17 stuff, was ridiculously young when they made Penthouse & Pavement (16 or 17). Also he's a left-hander playing a right-handed bass so in effect he's playing it upside down. Possibly a Doncaster Rovers supporter too.
I wonder whatever became of him.
As for the backing singer:
