Herbie Flowers lived a few doors up when I was a kid, and he moved to the big houses up by the Common when he started working with Bowie. Bowie introduced Herbie to Lou Reed and the rest is history. The music was brilliant, and punk a natural progression a couple of years later when everything slipped back into the dirge of prog rock. Properly gutted, had no idea he was not well. Well worth a watch.
A very sad day for music. DB was one of the most original rock music stars of all time and had a unique ability to reinvent himself throughout his long and fascinating career, from singing Anthony Newly style music hall beat songs in the 60's right through to jazz tinted songs at present, something most musicians are afraid to do. As a young teenager in the early 70's, I was always impressed with his music, his style, which though colourful was way ahead of the game and carried an air of maturity about it. I was in awe of older lads at school donning Bowie hair styles and painting their DM's. I kind of lost track of his material after 1980's Scary Monsters album, but rekindled my interest in him again after his last album before the new one. Such an iconic musician. There will never be another David Bowie. RIP
What at shock! I don't like being at this age now where people I admire are dying. I'm maybe more aware of it as I get older but it seems so many names I grew up knowing are slowly leaving us behind.
I let out an audible guttural noise when I saw this on the news this morning, truly sad news.
Suffolk - A truly great version of Heroes, thanks for sharing. Liked about 50% of his music, but that 50% i absolutely loved (Man who sold the world, Ziggy, Diamond Dogs etc).
Slightly off piste, but love this scene from Extras. RIP.
Its when you hear all the tributes and realise how many great songs he'd made over the years. A massive cultural icon whose work will be sorely missed by millions. #RIPDavidBowie

ps. Just watching that performance of 'Starman' on Top of the pops 1972. He must have seemed like an extraterstrial to a Thursday night audience settling down having watched Raymond Baxter talk about the brave new world of Post it notes and disposable lighters.
18 million people sitting with the family to see The New seekers, Gilbert o'sullivan , The osmonds and that nice young normal man David Cassidy with the lovely hair.
You can hear the spluttering of steralised milk in strained tea leaves and the outrage by the esso blue parrfin heaters in front rooms as Bowie flings his arms round Mick Ronson halfway thru the song. "ere love look at these Two nancy boys in make up!. Wheres that proper Rock n rolla Garry glitter! " can you imagine the impression it made on teenagers, dont matter if your from Castleford, Grimsby or Merthyr tydfil . A new culture spawned . you can be anyone you want to be, you can be different.
You dont have to hang around surbaban train stations with light ale, watney sevens , taking the piss out of people who dont want to go the local ritzy night club or to the working mans club with their mum and dad to listen to Engleburt humperdinck. you can join those people with make up , dyed hair and mad clothes that dont make you look like a mini me of your grandparents you can join those people who want something more. something better. David says you can.

Love it Disco pure poetry. As good as anything in the papers tomorrow
I'll whisper it quietly on this thread but "I wasn't a massive fan" HOWEVER the one thing I can acknowledge is the man was an icon and a talent the likes of is rare. He was a ground breaker He pushed limits beyond He influenced He will be missed and the likes of not seen for many a decade
Watching various news segs I found myself saying, I forgot that one, and shaking my head in amazement at the duration and span his music covered.
DJ Alfredo spinning Heroes will stay with me forever
Now, for my eternal shame, I see his ex is on CBB and from a clip I've just seen seems to want to make this all about her. Scandalous. Stick this man on a pedestal and no coat tail hangers should reach that high.
RIP to you Mr Bowie, one hell of a band and a party up there these days....
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

My sister had all his LPS in the 70s and lent them to me. I was hooked. She's distraught today as he was her first crush and inspiration for so much in her life. She shares his birthday ( and of course, Elvis) and only a few days ago she was so excited by his new album issued that day.
For my own part, I sang and played Space Oddity with our ukulele group this evening as a sort of tribute ... It actually sounded quite good...I think ?!
It was devastating to hear this breaking news this morning. What can you say about the loss of such a talent? RIP
When I first read the news here I have to say I was shocked, I hadn't even known he was ill. My first thought, indeed hope, was that this was one of his 'Life as Art' stunts, and it was to be followed by a surprise reappearance giving us all the chance to reflect on mortality without the pain of loss.
Its like an end of an era moment. I'm quite upset in the same way as when John Peel died a few years back.
Last week I turned on 6 music and caught a track half way through, I thought got to find out who this is and of course it turned out to be from David Bowie's latest album.
Out of curiosity I put radio 1 on this morning and Heros was being played and at the end Grimshaw said words to the effect of 'if any young bands are listening to that I suggest you go off to practice some more right now!'
I met the bloke who (accidentally) stabbed him in the eye at school. Shat himself at the time, but it didn't do David too much harm in the long run.
I honestly didnt know how he got that cool eye till today.I thought he was born with it. If I knew he got it like that when I was a yoot I might of got my mate to whack me in the eye. Definite bird puller. But knowing my luck I would've ended up with a milky one like Kirk Douglas in The Vikings.
For those younger R's fans that do Like Bowies music , heres a link to Rusty Egans twitter ac , and thus soundcloud and radio shows . Dj from The blitz under Steve strange and playing electronic music such as Numan, Foxx, Ultravox, Jarre, OMD etc since the late 70's.
If you didn't know, that could quite easily be a classical piece. Brilliant.
I heard Rick Wakeman making the same praise of Bowie for his brilliant and audacious writing, similarly citing "Life On Mars" for the way the the song makes bold, unexpected turns, in a doco on Bowie made a few years ago.
At the end of the anecdote, RW said "You know, I haven't played that song in years. I think I'll go home and play it tonight."

Genuine praise.
For some reason I didn't buy any of his albums, but listening on the radio whilst I drive the last couple of days he's been played non stop and I've got to say each track from whatever decade has been great, he's adapted as the years changed and is truly a genius in the music world, have just downloaded his greatest hits. RIP
favourite cheese mature Cheddar. FFS there is no such thing as the EPL
Compared to now there was always so much going on back then, so it was easy to like someone like Bowie without forking out for many of his records, which were relatively expensive at the time. Stuff like the Heroes album didn't exactly pass me by, but I never bought it as there was so much else to buy around that time. I've played a lot more of his old stuff in recent years as there's not been new material coming out from other people of his sort of quality and it was relatively fresh sounding to me. He had a huge following back in the day but if anything that's grown with the passing of time. That's happened to a few acts (The Clash for instance) but other people who were popular back in the day have disappeared off the face of the earth in terms of there being much interest.
