worst away day? 06:21 - Nov 25 with 27283 viewsYorkRanger

Reflecting on the 141 York supporters who travelled to Portsmouth last night to see the team beaten 6-0. Left me thinking about the worst away day that people have had. Could be unfriendly locals, the weather, or just the result.

There have been many, but for me the day I hosted a table at Elland Rd, for a group of predominantly Leeds supporters, when Brian Deane finally worked out how to score, is right up there...

Any offers?

When it was all going a bit mental outside and the Vale fans had locked themselves in their bar, a teenage QPR fan got bitten by a police dog.

Brian Rowe came over to stop the lad getting arrested as he had literally done nothing wrong, and one of the horses bit his ear

Safe to say what his worse away day would be !!!!!

Coventry City away the season we went down, got involved in the ruck outside the ground
Newcastle away the same season, I got arrested straight after elephant man scored their winner, was informed by the police that unless I cooperated I'd be in the police cells in Newcastle until Monday morning and then hauled before the judge, so I cooperated and then drove home
Middlesbrough away when the M1 got shut and we were diverted around Derby, got to the ground in the nick of time just to watch us get battered 4-0.
Stockport away in the FA cup was a complete bitch of a day.
As someone has stated above Oxfords old Manor ground was a bastard on more than one occasion
I've had a few dreadful away days at Notts Florist (who on here hasn't?).
Try doing Tranmere bleeding Rovers on a Friday night, bolox.

Away days can be a bloody good craic too, someone ought to start a thread on that.

I did mate and the 1-4 at Coventry around the same time. I was in the seats above and I think we had oooooh at least another 47 lol Only funny bit of the day was a Rangers legend who I'm sure a lot of people on here would know (he once did a one man pitch invasion at Highbury and somehow made it back into the clock end) coming into the seats quite hammered giving a massive roar and getting chucked out after about 5 seconds - I think he was on crutches at the time as well. Apart from that it was a pretty s*** day!

As some have said on here, it has to be Eoin Jess, above all the others.

That day had a profound effect on our modern history IMHO.

I think most of us have experienced days when we've been battered or shown no heart. But the Chesterfield 2-4 takes the biscuit for me. Bitterly cold, driving rain, turning to sleet and snow, open terrace with no cover, the bogs made the Conningham look hygienic. And we lost to a team that we were more than capable of beating.

Went back a year later, paid an extra £1 to go in the seats and we won.

Forest away late 80s. Went with a forest mate, it was fcking freezing. Lost 4-0 and Nigel Clough scored a hat- trick in 4 minutes. Think it stayed the fastest in the top flight untill last season. Oh and we had a goal disallowed when 1-0 down too. Coldest I have ever felt.

Also Charlton away in their Selhurst days. Midweek cup game lost 1-0 and second half was delayed for ages because of af floodlights failure. Got thrown out during this despite the fact the cops couldn't see anything due to the darkness. Ended up going in the Charlton end to watch the last 15 mins with them laughing at us. About 4,000 there and in those days Charlton never beat anyone. Utterly miserable.

I'd almost forgotten that one - Tuesday night, freezing, Nigel Quashie back at the club 'playing' in midfield. Shocking night.

To be honest, that night had some great gallows humour in the away end.

"if you can't borrow money, Borrowdale" song was decent.

The first airing of "Walking in a Ramage Wonderland".

And the regular advice belted out of "Breathe, Nigel! In through the nose, out through the mouth", as he was clearly blowing through his arse after just 15 mins!

We were 3-0 down after half an hour. I remembered I'd got a lift up with some friends that evening (Tues night). Arrived at 7.35. Just made ko. 3-0 down 20 min later and lost 5-0 before coming back and getting home adter 1am. Brilliant Rangers. Cheers.

Probably not the worst as it was fairly local but I think Rehman scored an OG to lose 1-0 in a cup replay at Luton in the rain in a game that they didn't have a single shot. Think it was a replayed replay after the original replay was called off due to rain.

The Forest away 5-0 was pretty good for the gallow's humour.

Surely the 13th April 1996, Highfield Road has to be up there?

That day we were 3rd bottom but above Coventry with a 3 better goal difference although they had a game in hand. There was a point between Coventry in 2nd bottom and Southampton who were 5th bottom. Although our destiny wasn't in our own hands we had the best GD of all the bottom 5 so it was all still to play for especially as Saints had Champions elect Man Utd to play (it was the grey shirt day) that day.

Everything looked okay midway into the second half for a valuable point until expensive flop and second half substitute Eoin Fcking Jess popped up to score his only goal for Coventry. Gutting. You had hardly heard the Cov fans until then. Impey got sent off right at the death for chinning one of theirs as well, can't remember who it was.

A horrible, horrible feeling as we left the ground that day realizing that this was the game that relegated us effectively. What made it worse was finding out afterwards that Saints had beaten Man U and City had also won. A miserable weekend.

Looking back at our team that day, we never had a forward on the bench. Hateley lumbered around up front with Gallen but where was Danny Dichio that day? Anybody remember?

For that Forest game, to add insult to injury when we scored our "equaliser" I lost all my loose change celebrating (which was pretty much all I had as a 17 year old) and it was eagerly picked up by all around me. Got the supporters coach up at about 7 as seem to remember was an early kick off on a sunday

This reminds me of the cup replay during the days of their away fan ban which didn't apply to cup games. Warren Neill OG I think and lost 1-0. The local idiots were well up for brightening up their otherwise miserable existence by taking a rare opportunity to ambush small groups of away fans before the game. Two of ours stabbed before that game and coins flying between the fans in adjoining terraces.

Pretty tasty outside afterwards too. I latched on to a large group of QPR looking for revenge purely because it felt safer being part of a group on the way back to the station. A few bottles were flying outside the station before we were finally able to get out of that hellhole.

I don't even go to many aways, but managed to be there for many of those mentioned...
chelsea 6-1
fulham 4-0 6-0
oxford 4-0
southend 5-0
wimbledon 5-0
coventry 1-0
cardiff 1-0

another one that I remember was convincing my dad (who's not even QPR) to take me to Forest away when I was a kid, spending hours in traffic on the motorway, getting to the ground in the fog and realising it had been called off before a long journey back home again.

Wimbledon was particularly bad for me as I took a yank colleague. I didn't like him, but I was moving to New York and needed his help so thought I'd play the good host. He told me that we weren't very good and continued to ask 'how are QPR doing?' with a snide glint in his eye every time I had to work with him after that.

Yeah that Luton away game in the cup during the away ban was grim all round. I remember there were a load of coaches laid on to escort Rangers fans from the station to the ground before the game but they had all mysteriously disappeared at the final whistle. Getting back to the station after was like something out the warriors. The carriage I managed to get on was full of wounded Rangers. Hated Luton before that and even more afterwards

Not been to that many away games but they were always guaranteed to be a great day out until kick off!

3 peronsal picks from me would be the already mentioned Leeds 6-1 game. A great journey up and a great prematch drink up and then after we scored the rest, as we all know, is history best forgotten.
Also and on a purely personal level, our away game at Sheff Utd in April 99. The game was played on my birthday (coincidentally) and a group of us including about 10 non footballing mates went up there for a birthday and football weekend extravaganza. Again, the journey up was brilliant but then it came to the game. Basically we ended up losing 2-0 but it was just such an utterly shite game as well and unsurprisingly we more than played our part. My non footballing mates were all, "You seriously watch this shit week in week out?!".

Final choice would be the Wimbledon FACup game in 97. Great for me being in Croydon at the time and the usual prematch drink up was first class. Having been subjected to the sublime in the previous round thanks to Trevors "Best Goal Ever" effort it was then a case of the ridiculous losing the game despite having half the ground full of Rangers, 12.000 I think was the quoted number. I thought that the winner had Liverpool in the next round but I've just checked and that wasn't the case so no idea where I got that idea from, but the result was just such a huge dissapointment from a day that promised so much.

Maybe we should have a "Huge dissapointment from a day that promised so much" thread?!

I've got the Power.

For me it has to be going to Norwich in April 1976 when a win would have all but secured us the 1st Division title ahead of Liverpool.

It seemed the whole of West London was there and we were ready to party - only to have our wildest dreams shattered by those b'stards in canary yellow! I still hate them even today.

We lost 3-2 and Liverpool nicked the title by a point.

What a long and depressing train journey home that was!

away at Huddersfield for me. Relegated to League 1 by a last minute Delroy Facey goal... The locals giving it large after the match and multiple fights breaking out on the way back to the coach.
a miserable end to a season and a miserable journey back to London.

I too was there for that one.

Consolation eventually was that they also got relegated.

Year before at huddersfield we left London in t-shirts and it was snowing by the time we got to the stadium. My mate ended up with pneumonia.

Many of the games mentioned I went to unfortunately , but a memory for me was Huddersfield away in the venables era, never been so fecking cold in my life. My mate parked up 2 miles from the ground after a terrible journey, spotted a Huddersfield fan and asked him where the nearest boozer was.." You're looking at him"! ( I've posted that line before, but it was the highlight)... We were truly crap, khasis were a wall, fellow R's were literally blue with the cold.. We lost 2-0.. Shaking back to his motor at full time, it didn't take long to realise we'd had two wheels nicked off said cheap Renault .. Stayed in a b+b, got home after the car was fixed at 4pm Sunday...it really was GRIM... Not sure me and Rick ever went to an away game together after that.

i knew a few luton picks would start to filter in. That's proper hardship you suffered there Brian. Never mind been in an open stand exposed to the elements. Sure you'll be in the pub warming up in one and a half hours time. Anyway I saw Bayern play real Madrid and it was -16 or something daft so you won't feel sorry from me for weather conditions.

Never went to kennilworth but didn't you have to file into that ground in a strange way that left you open to getting the coined etc.

Surprised nobody has mentioned that stoke trip yet where the stewards let them bottle the crap out of you all and their fans on the pitch to attach our keeper.

They were actually separate trips and were great because we won both times. The bottling thing was after Bircham got Taggert sent off, the Royce incident was our next visit there. Used to love going up there and winning, they took it so badly

More of a personal one, but Spurs away in '93 was a low point.

The mates I was going with couldn't make it for some reason, but I was about to leave the country for six months so I decided to go on my tod anyway and drove. Thought it would be pay on the door (you could do that back then, younger fans), but it wasn't, so had to get a ticket off a tout that turned out to be in the home terrace behind the goal.

Got in there, surrounded by rabid Spurs singing away, when they got an early penalty. I was consciously thinking "make sure you look happy when this goes in", but Tony Roberts saved it. It was so unexpected (it was Tony Roberts) that pure instinct kicked in and I leaped up in the air shouting "YEEESSSS". I lasted about 30 seconds more before the stewards kicked me out and put me in the seats at the side next to a young German lad.

By about 80 minutes they were 4-0 up and the young German lad started telling me about how he was a Nazi and hated Jews and he was really glad I was a Rangers fan. At that point I cut my losses.

As I was walking back to the car I think Devon White got a late brace. Meanwhile I was stuck in a massive traffic jam on the Seven Sisters Road on my own for the next half an hour with my Kick Up The Rs sticker in the back window with loads of Spurs walking past taking the piss, gobbing on the windows, punching the bonnet etc.

What a great day out that was.

Edit: just looked it up and final score was 3-2, so they must have only been 3-0 up when I left. Seemed like 4. We were utterly woeful that day
