Off the back of Discodroid's worst of thread, I thought I'd start a best by genre thread.
I'll start with the baton: horror
Mr Friedkin you crazy man. Saw in the cinema in my 20s for the first time, having read the book and knowing the head turners (sorry) and it still gave me the willies.
Theatre of Death. A Hammer classic staring an assortment of British actors, Robert Morley, a camp theatre critic who is force fed his poodle and Eric Sykes, a cop who dies in the boot of a car. A horror dark comedy. The woman being frazzled under the hair dryer still leaves me queasy at the thought.
There aint half been some clever bastards.

The Mist's ending is hands down the most downbeat ending I've ever seen, utterly marvelous. Frank Darabont changed the ending from the Stephen King book it's adapted from and even King later confessed that the movie version ending was better than his!
I like a bit of Japanese horror, anyone remember Audition (Odishon)?
Audition is brutal. Other notable oriental films;
Game of Death R-Point Infected A Tale of Two Sisters Death Note Tokyo Gore Police Oldboy
Sexy Asian dwarves wanted.

Huh... I wrote the original story that was adapted as the film, Event Horizon. I also wrote another that got adapted as the film, Bad Santa. My two claims to fame. That and being an R!
I find myself confused!
Shit but local

Theatre of Blood I think that is. I'm a real wuss with horror films - that one stayed with me and I haven't been able to eat any sort of food that has a white sauce since watching that scene with Robert Morley and that was a long time ago.
The Omen, anything with devil dogs is scary - or werewolves, Dog Soldiers. Anything with Christopher Lee in the Hammer Horror days. Horror Express (Telly Savalas) Dead of Night (the one with the ventriloquist I posted the other day), Circus of Horrors (Anton Diffring) but they are more hammy than horror I suppose. I don't watch anything where limbs get cut off - just gratuitous schlock violence

The Car is fab. If you liked that, Nightmares was a film that had four stories in it and one was very much like The Car. It had Lance henriksen in it.

1. Alien - best atmosphere ever created in a film, made a space a real lonely place with rogue beasties on the loose. 2. The Thing - again really good atmosphere and a terrifying concept 3. Paranormal activities- alot will disagree but nearly kaked my pants watching the first one. Remember watching in a messdeck(living room on a ship)of 35 blokes in pitch black nearly had a heart attack. Obviously when the lights came on everyone said it was sh@t even though they'd reacted the most, lol.
My inner child says anything with zombies or darleks.

Stephen King is so frustrating! 1500 excellent gripping pages let down by 50 crap pages at the end, every time! Lots of adaptations of his books aren't worth mentioning but The Shining is the best example of Hollywood doing a better ending than Stephen King.
I also love Asian horror - there is a load of K Horror on Netflix.
most of my favourites already mentioned, including Bubba Ho Tep which is just genius. Bruce Campbell is THE MAN!! Evil Dead 2 also great. The Thing & The Shining are just 2 of the greatest films ever made in any genre. Haven' t seen anyone mention the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre yet, true horror and still scary. Most recent horrors are very disappointing, either relying too much on violence just for the sake of it or just not scary, but I thought The Orphanage was pretty good and The Cabin In The Woods was an original take on the whole genre and had some amazing scenes near the end.

The Car was ace. So I went on to watch Black Cadillac (similar idea but not as good) and now watching The Wraith. Similar idea again. Again not as good. Tweeting it up.
