Preferred candidate for the new Swansea City manager role

It isn’t the biggest secret, and his background in the game is well documented, we even carried a feature on him a few weeks ago. And now it seems he is the favoured candidate to replace Russell Martin at Swansea City. His name of course is Chris Davies, and you really would be hard stretched to find a manager looking to step up with equal experience who fits the criteria of the Swans majority ownership.

Our first report on Davies was on May 25th, two weeks ago, and covered much of his apprenticeship in the first class game.

We are now told that Swansea City do favour his services, and despite a full rethink required on the clubs backroom staff Davies it seems is now at the forefront of the clubs majority ownership’s thoughts. On the backroom staff that were at Swansea - Martin has taken them from the club (although yet to be made official) to Southampton so the Swans position does have the feeling of a rebuild. That’s a great shame after the promise the Swans were showing towards the end of last season, and the positive noises coming from Martin. However, football has little loyalty, and where we do see some it’s generally in favour of the person and not the club.

We understand that Davies along with one other candidate feature in the top two the Swans will attempt to lure to Swansea City. However, no ‘formal’ discussions have taken place as yet, and we don’t expect a quick resolution. Southampton still maintain Russell Martin and four staff will start their new jobs come their official championship status being rubber stamped, and there is a belief now some common ground may have been reached between the Swans and the Saints. That’s to be seen because both clubs have dug in regards their financial positions regards Martin.

Of course with no agreement in place Martin would have to breach his contract to become Southampton manager opening up another minefield for the Saints, which surely they would want to avoid. Davies in the other hand is without employment since leaving Leicester City with Brendan Rodgers and his employment at the Swansea.Com Stadium is far smoother a pathway and easy to implement.

The question has been asked about Swansea players leaving for the south coast of England with Martin, or at least closely after his official appointment. Joel Piroe has made it known he wants premier league football if he is to leave Swansea this summer, and the only other transfer we think Martin would want is Matt Grimes. That if course is for another time, but most certainly will feature once the transfer window opens.

What are your thoughts on this latest news on Chris Davies ? We think it’s a gamble but one worth taking with his vast amount of previous experience in the top flight of English and Scottish football.
