| Your Report | Southampton v Liverpool Your Report added at 16:31:29 A loss was not unexpected, but we could justifiably have taken a point here. We did enough in attack, Dibling and Onuachu put in some memorable work. It was defence that let us down today - the usual futzing around at the back, a McCarthy howler and a lot of standing around and not anticipating. Sugawara was a bit unlucky on that penalty call. We have a long way back out of the hole we have dug for ourselves. Doesn’t look promising right now. |
| Your Report | Southampton v Everton Your Report added at 19:45:10 First 30-35 minutes were a borefest. Then we at least moved it forwards quickly through Downes and Fernandes a couple of times - more of that please! Second half was more interesting, but nerve shredding at times. About time we got the rub of the green. KWP was energetic throughout, Ramsdale showed his worth, Dibling oozed class once he came on. What a winner - so happy for Arma, great work from Suginara. Showed we have a chance to survive. |
| Your Report | AFC Bournemouth v Southampton Your Report added at 22:49:49 The first half could hardly have been worse. We did have a great early chance from the break by Lesley. THB played one sublime through ball to Dibling. After we got picked apart by Bournemouth. I am not against playing out of the back in principle to break the press, but the way Saints do it is hopeless. Is this what RM wants, or are the players not stepping up!? We have to mix in the fast break and put the ball into the box quickly or else we are sunk. Little positive to say otherwise. Ross got on the ball a lot, Lallana looked class at times. Things have to change if we are not to be cast adrift by Christmas. |
| Your Report | Southampton v Manchester United Your Report added at 15:32:36 Martin rang the changes and brought in the fresh faces that many on this and other sites wanted to see. What a good first half hour too, though it is a worry perhaps that our main offensive threat is a teenager with zero PL starts to his name. But then, oh dear me! Archer was about as poor as Adam A has been to date, though I would have bet on Arma to dispatch that penalty! Acres of space opened up in midfield and the back and Man U took full advantage. Super disappointing second half - we did absolutely nothing even with the subs. Positively speaking, we have options, we have (some) quality but the balance isn’t right yet. We still look awfully lightweight in many areas of the field. Thank goodness we have Ramsdale - he is going to get a lot of work while we sort this out. Hopefully Bednarek and THB will settle in the right middle defence pairing. |
| Your Report | Brentford v Southampton Your Report added at 17:46:41 The good news: (1) Great goal! (2) Dibling a star in the making (3) Ramsdale a great in transfer - big, mouthy ‘keeper, great shot stopper, decent with his feet. The game : We threw it away yet again, though fair to say Brentford played very well and sussed out early all our weaknesses. Players - especially Bednarek and Stephens - have to take as much of the blame as the manager for the tippy tappy nonsensical defensive play. That needs to be fixed urgently, maybe the 5 at the back has to be ditched. Individuals - Aribo was good, at least went forward through the lines. Sugawara good on the overlap, created more than most. Fernandes can clearly play a bit and should start. Early subs took off the poorest performers in the first half. Not sure if Smallbone cuts it at this level. Armstrong, what can you say? I feel for the lad, but the fall off from last season is pretty dramatic. No confidence, pace or strength on the ball, but if he puts thst chance away, maybe the trajectory changes? |
| Your Report | Southampton v Nottingham Forest Your Report added at 18:59:15 This standard of play isn’t going to get us very far in the PL. Too lightweight and too slow through the middle. The attack needs a rethink - we had no capacity to hurt Forest today. Still it is early doors and I am still confident about improvements once the new talent is bedded in. |
| Your Report | Leeds United v Southampton Your Report added at 19:25:55 Well done, well done, Saints! A very cagey affair, but Saints showed up - and Leeds did not! No-one played less than very well. We always looked in control - from front to back. Centre defence was immense, Smallbone and Downes were superb in midfield and Adam Armstrong got the job done upfront as he has most of the season. |

| Your Report | Southampton v Hull City Your Report added at 22:11:50 Well that sort of performance is not going to deliver promotion! Hull were good value for the win and outplayed Saints in the first half. Saints didn’t adjust their game until well into the second half - and even then we were too slow and predictable. Shout outs to Bednarek, Aribo and Brooks (who looks class). No surprises that Bothwell, Mara and A Armstrong were subbed out - they were all anonymous or terrible! |
| Your Report | Southampton v Blackburn Rovers Your Report added at 17:46:15 I was getting annoyed at our inability to score a hatful of goals against such poor opposition - but then we got two more in added time ..! We are better with Downes on the pitch - and when Stuey has a good game like today. Confidence is just oozing from the team - only wish they would punch to their full weight, especially at home. We like to be entertained as well as winning! |
| Your Report | Coventry City v Southampton Your Report added at 22:42:19 Well, if Adam A has had his shooting boots today, we might have won this one. As it was, we dropped points - made it too easy for Coventry to keep us out, restrict our chances. Things looked up a bit when the wide men subs came on and the game opened up. But we do need to know when to inject variety and pace in our attacks. Plenty of control, but this type of performance won’t be enough for us to catch the top 2. Shout out to Bazunu for the great save at the death! |
| Your Report | Southampton v Birmingham City Your Report added at 18:30:05 This does look like our best starting line up, enabling us to get a good start and able to ride out the inevitable soggy patch early second half. It would be nice if Stuey, Sulemana and Alcaraz could last a full game occasionally. Also that Adam A. would (re) develop the killer instinct in front of goal. But we can’t have it all I guess. We are improving in midfield and defence and Bazunu is more reliable than hitherto. We have more than enough to stay in the play off slots. Like others in this site, I am ambivalent about promotion - just loving the play and the results at this level! |
| Your Report | Preston North End v Southampton Your Report added at 12:01:16 The ending was pretty exciting! But really we have too much quality not to be going out and winning games against the likes of Preston. They were the more direct team and created more chances than Saints. Again, we had lots of possession but too few goal chances and slow movement. Player wise I thought Stuey A deserved a shout out - he at least was on the move and showing. Bednarek was solid. KWP great going forward but left a lot of space at the back. Didn’t see a lot from Charles, Adams or Mara. |
| Your Report | Southampton v Liverpool Your Report added at 19:56:56 Well, well … not the type of game and score line that most Saints fans would have expected. Credit the team for recovering from an awful start. Certainly one of the best attacking performances we have seen. Playing without fear (I suppose) there were some good moves and excellent goals. Defensively we were a bit all over the place, but, credit where it is due, McCarthy made some good saves. Well onwards - and hopefully upwards - next season!? |
| Your Report | Southampton v Fulham Your Report added at 20:17:09 Out with a whimper! KWP seemed to be trying, Lavia too, but not many others. No chemistry at all in the final third - does not seem to matter what the line up is. |

| Your Report | Nottingham Forest v Southampton Your Report added at 23:59:06 Compared to our recent outings, this was an entertaining match but ultimately we didn’t get anything out of it - as we should have done. Neither defence was great shakes, but Forest had the sharper eye for goal. Team selection looked right and we had more attacking intent than usual. Che had a disappointing outing and Alcaraz has a tendency to disappear - or lose his rag - when things don’t go his way. Bednarek seemed to be starting point for every attack - suggesting again we were a bit light on creativity in midfield. He, Walcott and Lavia have been consistent performers. Lyanco was a beast. Otherwise, no one stood out, other than AMN who was particularly poor. |
| Your Report | Newcastle United v Southampton Your Report added at 16:48:57 A flicker of hope after the first half where we were generally solid. Good to see Djenepo and S. Armstrong starting. Once Newcastle turned up the heat in the second half, we wilted quickly. We cannot seem to keep the ball AND move it forward constructively - at least occasionally. Good as Newcastle were coming forward, our defensive organization seemed to fall apart, gaps appeared especially on the right side and the center was all at sea. All we can hope for now is to pick up a few points - maybe one win? - before season end. We are basically down now as I cannot see us getting more than 30 points. |

| Your Report | Southampton v AFC Bournemouth Your Report added at 12:43:53 Utterly predictable sadly. Spineless effort from Saints. Made Bournemouth look like world beaters in what was a must win game for us. No idea why Mc Carthy was brought in - he could have done better on the goal. We started brightly with even A Armstrong putting in a good effort. But it faded too quickly and the second half was by and large desperate. Bringing in Adams and S Armstrong made sense and there were flashes of their best play - unlucky on the disallowed goal. Other than that a couple of gripes : Walcott offside too often, Alcaraz diving. We don’t know our best team. We have a deep squad unlike the previous seasons - but the quality is very thin on the ground. Will be interesting to see how we retool - as we must - in the championship next year. |
