Ray, reading your dabbling with AI intrigues me. My daughter in law (a highly qualified lawyer with a leading USA company) recently gave me a remarkable demonstration of AI. We could never routinely afford her fees, nor she waste time on something so trivial, but AI delivered an eye-opening result in the time it took us to share a pot of tea.

Following an appalling family meal at a restaurant where everything went wrong (delays, poor service, poor food, wine spilled, customer clothing lost by the hotel etc), she simply dictated brief bullet point notes chronologically highlighting each misdemeanor then adding the relevant point of law into her firm’s AI assisted word processing system and within a single minute it had produced the most amazingly compelling letter of complaint, with content, text, spelling, grammar all 100% perfect. All she then had to do was a single read through to sign it off, but remarkably she found zero errors in its two sheets of A4 content. Apparently, the output success rate is above 95% and rarely does she need to edit anything. The entire process took under five minutes.

This system has apparently had a hugely positive impact on productivity. It appears that being a brilliant, knowledgeable lawyer (or any other skill-set) doesn’t always dovetail with having outstanding spontaneous letter writing and even the best must work hard on their wordsmith skills. This AI system apparently churns out impeccable prose and hence time, and hence cost savings should result, and as in this case, bringing normally unaffordable legal services to all.

Yes, AI can get it wrong, an example being the recent BBC criticism of Apple’s AI Newsbot misreporting its broadcast content. The example I have quoted illustrates that the safeguard of a human check is desirable. But the demonstration I witnessed simply blew me away.

As a (retired) Chartered Marketer, the potential is self-evident to me. My basic creative ideas were often genius, but I then employed an army of copywriters and artists to turn them into more effective client presentations and then into final advertising or broadcast copy. I now envisage AI and its linguistic engineering might have the impact of a new Industrial Revolution. In summary, AI itself won’t take your job, but somebody knowing how to use AI probably will. The cleverest, most intelligent and knowledgeable (like my daughter in law) have already worked this out and she has soared to the top of her profession in minimal time. The first step is understanding, not fearing its capabilities. If only I had my time again…….

Match off
at 13:07 7 Dec 2024

Turned back at Peterborough Services. But super CUSA is refunding coach fares (match tickets are valid for the rearrangement). No such good fortune for those in car or train.

Is it coincidence that Notts County have an injury/selection crisis? Am I too cynical? Looking at the images, the scoreboard panels have already fallen off, and could they not simply close that stand given it is far from a sold out fixture?

Glad I didn’t go. Perfect demonstration of why we needed to recruit another striker. One shot on target, and that being one that dribbled into the keeper’s gloves from Payne. I suppose a valuable point, but poor reward for the 100 hardy souls now facing a six hour trip home. Swindon Tuesday now a must win.

Harrogate v Gainsborough FA Cup

Like you Durham, I’ll be in my armchair today. In fact, I have just taken up said position to watch some TV (T10) cricket having exited my bed some four hours after my usual travel companions had departed for Fleetwood. 0530 I did for Grimsby, but a 0430 departure is just ridiculous. Back to 1500 normality for Notts County, then more nonsense for Crewe. However, a Friday night and sleep in Saturday is better than a Tuesday evening.

Sky+ is offering a choice of half a dozen matches. What is the point of that? It only hurts the home team revenues, but they probably care little having had their palms crossed with TV Silver. It’s the fans that suffer, and I’ve had enough. Clubs and EFL don’t deserve the loyalty of travelling fans. Will watch on TV instead.

Dire game - zero quality.

Hope the 1,000 GT fans got a better welcome than us. Horrible ground, horrible low level views, fancy pies at silly expensive prices, no away bar, nearest pub distant.

Just watched highlights of Millwall 2 - 3 Scunthorpe in the 2009 play offs that saw Scunny promoted to the Championship. Then it struck me that both Scunny and Yeovil have a worse record than we. Yes, we might have the worst record of those still in the EFL, but survive by there always being two worse…..

It was actually a 04:30 alarm Gerry. I will apologise now for not setting my alarm for 03:30 next weekend for an 04:30 departure to Fleetwood. Regrettably, I must watch on TV as on the Sunday I have another long journey and it’s just too much.

CUSA has formally complained via the Football Supporters Association that two consecutive long away journeys for 12:30 kick offs, and then a Friday night trip to Crewe is utterly unreasonable. But nobody gives a S H 1 T about real fans.

BSM vs Arsenal U21
at 19:28 13 Nov 2024

Fair comment Wessex. But I wonder if we will see any of them again.

There were 18 BSM Trophy fixtures on Tuesday, of which five had attendances under 1,000, including Wycombe v Crawley (723), Morecambe v Carlisle (788). The latter perhaps illustrates the fan lack of appetite for the competition.

Remarkably, the three best attended were….
Colchester v Arsenal 4265 (over 1,000 Arsenal).
Lincoln v Man City. 3,055
Huddersfield v Man Utd 3,032.

I am now beginning to wonder if many that left early were Arsenal (or Ipswich) fans not wearing colours that had bought tickets in the South Stand. However, it defies logic that we had the largest gate of the evening by such a huge percentage. There were, however, patently large groups from local junior football, many of which seemed reluctant to participate in any way and most were glued to their phones.

I reckon dozens of free tickets given to local youth teams Gerry. Not proper U’s supporters as these large groups in the South Stand started leaving way before the final whistle.

Nice to see a decent performance, but Arsenal were poor. No wonder Premier League clubs buy in so much overseas talent.

Looks like dozens of free tickets have been given to local youth football clubs. West, South and North Stands pretty full. The U’s well on top.
