Agree, plus I'd add into the mix the terrible start to the season we had, where it looked like we might be in L1 next season. Probably not the best time to negotiate a contract extension for your highest earners, like Cook.
It sounds like the newer contracts arranged by Nourry are probably longer (we have to guess now) but they are probably more like the 4+ year deals to amortise fees other clubs are doing, which should also prevent these times where we have a glut of contracts expiring at the same time.
After listening to lots of Undr the Cosh, I think its mostly down to money.
If you have a poor injury record you earn less money on the whole, so the free agents really are phoning it in to avoid injury. Just doing enough to not look like an idiot, but not actually ever hitting more than 70%
The trouble is when there are more than two or three players on the pitch at the same time we look diabolical.
This is the kind of rot that sets into any workplace, we've all looked at a co-worker getting away with loads and think "If they can't be bothered, then neither can I" and this is where we end up.
What I don't get, is, say I was a free agent. I've got x7 opportunities to show a prospective employer exactly how good I am. It could mean the difference between playing at Southampton next season, or Rotherham. Surely that could motivate someone. Unless, as I suspect, most of the time deals are already done and a lot of players already have an idea where they are going next year (as long as they are fit)...
If we are relying on our experienced "pros" like Colback and Fox to show everyone how to do it, then I think we are equally in some trouble.
I think this self inflicted situation has as much to do with contracts, as it does injuries.
A lot of these players are not going to be at QPR next year, and their number one priority is avoiding serious injury, aside from Jimmy Dunne, who upto the last game seemed to be running at 100% still
I'm not sure how you do it though. Don't Chelsea hand out money to parents for the kids at the puppy farm for new cars/houses etc in lieu of signing on fees etc?
Yeah, I'm massively over simplifying it, but I think for the PL at least there were only 5 or 6 clubs that had more money coming in than going out. I remember West Ham being one, but mainly because they got the rental of the London stadium for free.
I'm not sure how you effectively change salary structures for players without all 92 clubs buy in. We already saw a few renegade clubs try to start their own 'super' league, so I'm not sure it would ever work.
I don't know where we got to the world where a youth team player with no chance of first team action could be a millionaire (not talking about QPR here)
Without wanting to sound too socialist if we choose to run public services privately. Then those companies will try to maximise their profits.
They will reduce their Operational Expenditure, so they make more profit. They will invest in their infrastructure less, so they make more profit. They will increase prices, so they make more profit. They will reduce their service levels, so they can make more profit. They will borrow money to run the company, then pay dividends to the lenders, so there is no profit and then pay little to no tax.
They will be regulated by a government body that applies punitive fines to them, which also help them to pay less tax ;p
Thames Water are literally filling our rivers with effluent, while they literally take the p!ss out of us.
Please can we just run public services sensibly? We (the people) are going to end up paying one way or another, I'd rather it was done upfront in taxes and then my (water, train, gas, electricity, phone, internet) might actually be; a). affordable b). reliable c). improved?
--Sorry to go all Ben Elton, I know we don't do politics here, but I'm old and grumpy today
Warnock was after Scott Parker, but Tony had so little time to arrange the money and probably every agent in the world ringing him 24/7 telling him that the latest bag of sh1t was actually the hottest property in the footballing world and he would need to act fast to secure their services!
