Who in their right mind wants to stand in front of Spencer Leniu running at full steam?

Would the outlay for the NRL be worth it? Idk, but I see your point about the game's contraction here having a knock on effect.

I heard somewhere that the clubs now have more control over fixtures, something Sky gave up when making a considerably lower financial offer, and it's them who don't want Thursday games. As you say, absolutely crucial to get a handful of extra bodies in the ground and buying a pie on a Friday.

The small-time thinking infects every level of the game. Such a shame.

Lot's of questions about how you'd get it off the ground, structure, which clubs, etc. But my main thought is that Peter V'landys only does things he thinks will make money in the short-to-medium term - hence the push for a PNG team because the Aus government have offered $600m, the Las Vegas season-opener, using profits to buy existing businesses in Australia. Would an NRL Europe make money? Doubtful, but even if it did you'd be looking at a very long-term project. I cant see him wanting to spend time and money on it, especially when they can just use the English game as a source of players.

London's a joke of a club, in fact it's not even a club anymore just a first team and a handful of off-field staff. David Hughes has spent £30million to take a club averaging 4,500 at Griffin Park to one averaging 1,000 at Wimbledon, and in the process driven away people who were the bedrock of the club's support and the local community clubs

Even the much-vaunted development work that managed to produce a few England internationals has been destroyed in the last few years - academy team closed and fewer community clubs than at any point in the last 20 years.

And I doubt the other clubs will allow Toulouse the time and space needed to establish themselves, they've already changed the rules so Catalans have to pay for everyone's travel to France once a year. Too many people (owners, players, fans, administrators) really do just want to revert to playing games against teams they can travel to on the local bus network. Eventually, that's what they'll probably get - and wonder why so many young players are desperate to leave for the NRL (just wait until that hits 20 teams and needs more players).

Just a little defence of IMG here, I don't think they realised just how resistant the clubs would be to absolutely every suggestion made. They've ended up cobbling together a package that doesn't make a huge difference but was just about all they could get the clubs to agree to. I wouldn't be surprised if IMG walked away, the financial returns just aren't worth the work they have to put in.

Yes, actually, I am. Russia is a fascist state (run by real, actual, genuine, fascists, not the nonsense that gets spouted by some students and online larpers) that has invaded a neighbouring country and would happily do the same to numerous others in the vicinity. Take a look at their behaviour in every Ukrainian town and city they've conquered - the rape, torture and murder they dish out as a matter of course. I am delighted that we are doing something to help the poor buggers defending themselves against these monsters.

It's interesting to me that you think the Liberals are to the left of Labour, given that the only time they've been in government in the past 100 years they actively participated in the wholesale destruction of the social and civic infrastructure that held this country together and paved the way to all of us being financially and socially poorer.

Not sure that's right on Gaza. 3 or 4 constituencies with very large Muslim communities have elected independents who stood almost exclusively on the issue of Gaza. So Labour have definitely lost votes because of that, and some of the left went to the Greens, but they've countered that by gaining votes from other people in other areas - which likely would be people who voted Tory last time out.

Alongside Reform taking votes across the country but in a haphazard way, the end result is that Labour have basically got the same overall % but a much wider geographical spread and now have a whopping majority (albeit many of those will be small majorities).

It's simply not true to say that nothing will ever happen. Every year our capacity is reduced further and further - we're probably at about 17.5k now and a good quarter of those are restricted views. And, of course, the old girl has been neglected. So, there will come a point at which we either find ourselves reduced to an even smaller capacity, we find a way to do something with the small spaces around our current site, or we move out entirely.

Rob Burrows Rugby League Hero
at 22:03 2 Jun 2024

I love rugby league, in fact I watch a lot more of it than I do football, and I especially loved watching Rob Burrow play rugby league. He played the game with joy and dash and a smile on his face. And he brought those emotions out in those who watched him play. It was heartbreaking to watch his body wither after his diagnosis, but he fought that battle in the same manner he played the game. An absolute battler from start to finish, loved and adored by everyone who played with and against him as well as the who watched him. Rest In Peace Rob.

End of Term 23/24 – Attack
at 10:14 28 May 2024

'Fallow' would suggest there was something before those years for LF, which there wasn't. Well, there was Hayes, I guess.

When both players were 20, Les had 2 games and no goals. When Les was 21 (ie next season for Sinclair) he had 5 games (3 for Brentford in the 3rd division) and no goals.

Les was very much a development project, over a number of years, jus as SA should have been. Instead, our chronic mismanagement meant we had no option but to throw him into the first team. In that context, he's done very well.

I said outright I wasn't suggesting SA would or could turn into LF, I was trying to put some meat on the bones of player development, especially for players who haven't come through a proper youth set up.

End of Term 23/24 – Attack

Good post. I posted something similar (copied below) on a thread earlier this season and I think Ferdinand's stats are really interesting:

Just on the Les Ferdinand thing (and I really need to emphasise he was my favourite ever CF, so I'm not saying Armstrong will ever be anywhere near Les' ability) I've just looked up his stats and it's quite interesting. We all remember it took him a while to get going after he joined the club, but the stats are quite stark.

The season Les turned 20, 1986-87, he played 2 games and scored 0 goals.
Turning 21, 1987-88, he played 2 games for us and 3 for Brentford, scoring 0 goals.
Turning 22, 1988-89, he played 29 games for Besiktas, scoring 18 goals.
Turning 23, 1989-90, he played 9 games for QPR, scoring 2 goals.
Turning 24, 1990-91, he played 21 games, scoring 8 goals.
Turning 25, 1991-92, he played 25 games, scoring 12 goals.

And that's really when he hit his stride, aged 24/25, and went on to utterly dominate defenders and score buckets of goals.

Again, I'm not saying Armstrong is going to be anywhere near Ferdinand's level but, bearing in mind he only turned 20 last summer, we really have no idea what he is capable of. What we do know is that he's still very young, still growing into his body, hasn't had an ideal development plan, and that he's improved leaps and bounds over the past 2 years.

Frank Sibley RIP
at 10:59 12 May 2024

Ah, Brian, it was a fair while ago I wrote that on here. Stand by every word of it though, it's so important we remember the people who contributed so much to Queens Park Rangers FC. I understand why the training ground's been named after the owner's dad, but...

As for beautifully worded, your phrase is perfect.

I let out an audible groan when I saw the news of Frank Sibley's passing yesterday. His 30-odd years at QPR corresponded almost perfectly with the 30-odd years where we had good teams playing good football and we collectively enjoyed a modicum of success and a lot of excitement. He contributed hugely to that, in a variety of roles, and is someone I immediately associate with QPR teams of those decades. RIP

School. End Friday
at 13:32 29 Apr 2024

The Premier League rule is 3,000 seats, or 10% of capacity if the stadium holds less than 30,000. There is some leeway though, because some clubs give a few less when the stadium design doesn't allow the full amount in a segregated way.

I *think* with the EFL it's 2,000 or 10%.

Pretty sure Loftus Rd holds less than 18,000 these days, so the School End Upper should suffice for all visiting teams, and it did for Sheffield Wednesday, so there may be some other reason why Leeds were given extra.

The three shades of blue is kind of quirky and I don't mind it. As others have said though, the collar doesn't work, both the little triangle and the way the raglan sleeves prevent a real hoop. The betting thing is also an issue, as ever, but the club have made it very clear they need the money more than they care about that.

Three is the cursed number as QPR fall in a hole at Hull - Report
at 20:17 15 Apr 2024

I keep seeing people, on here and social media, talking about re-signing Willock, which to me is utterly bizarre. Ignoring the fact that he almost certainly wouldn't sign a new contract, what is it that people are seeing in his performances since Cifuentes arrived?

Besides which, I'd be amazed if Cifuentes would want him - he plays him because he doesn't have many alternatives. Same goes for our new whizkid MBA CEO, stats-based player analysis does not highlight players like Chris Willock for high value contracts from cash-strapped Championship clubs looking to punch above their weight.
