Is Clive Myrie too " careless" to be a big earner?
at 22:14 4 Dec 2024

That’s a pretty tight regime to be fair, but if you omitted an entry from your monthly return would your employer be any the wiser?

Where I previously worked, any gifts etc had to be reported immediately and permission sought to retain them, but there was a presumption we wouldn’t accept any gifts, hospitality etc. it was just too much hassle.

In terms of Myrie, if the BBC weren’t aware of his outside income/events at the time because he hadn’t declared them there wouldn’t have been a lot they could have done. In terms of the others, they’ve come up well short of the standards we should be expecting: .

The SNP Budget Fiasco
at 19:15 4 Dec 2024

The decision to lift it is a decision for Scotland, but if I were Starmer I’d ensure no extra resources were provided to them and I’d tell the SNP it’s your call, but you have to fund it from your existing budget.

The SNP Budget Fiasco
at 15:57 4 Dec 2024

Westminster has devolved big parts of the social security budget from London to Scotland, it’s not a case of the budget going up by £5bn in 5 years. They said, the amount spent on social security has gone up across the UK.

Trump pardoned 237 people during his term in office for a variety of offences including contempt of court, perjury, obstruction of justice, retaining secret information to name but a few.

Trump pardoned his son in law Jarod Kushner’s father following his conviction for an array of offences, Trump has now picked Kushner Snr as his Ambassador to France!

100%.

Whatever one’s political preferences, it’s really important to have a strong and effective position. I don’t like to see one political party have a large majority, I’d much prefer a smallish working majority as that’s more likely to ensure we have checks and balances in place.

It’s a terrible state of affairs. She’s not the first and won’t be the last to pick up the payment, Kwarteng picked up £18k for around 40 days. 🤬

It’s completely wrong.

Donations from foreign individuals are illegal under UK election law, but there are ways around it. Musk could donate via one of the U.K. subsidies of his companies, he could move through the British branch of his social media company X or Tesla.

Who is stopping farmers strike? They are perfectly entitled to strike should they wish to do so, what they can’t do is break the law. Blocking a port would constitute an offence - much like the just stop oil types commit.

Syria War - 300,000 civilian deaths
at 18:30 30 Nov 2024

Yes, ISIS possibly sensing an opportunity and are attacking al-Assad’s regime and are scrapping for control of Aleppo. Putin who has supported the Al-Assad regime may not be in a position to provide a similar level of support as he has in the past on account of Ukraine and the Iranians the current regime’s other big backer have had a bit of a beating off the Israelis of late and they may also be on the back foot.
If al-Assad was toppled then it could destabilise the Middle East even further and it could jeopardise Russia’s base in the med.

They’re all hypocrites in opposition, it’s what happens. Look at what happened when Labour introduced the minimum wage. We see it here and across the pond.

The bottom line is the current government have a majority and they can do what they want, but there’ll be no excuses in 4.5 years if they haven’t done a good job - they’ll be out.

The last Conservative government had a majority, they messed upbeat time and were held to account at the GE.

It’s kicking off in Syria now, ISIS are attacking al-Assad’s regime and are scrapping in Aleppo. Putin may not be in a position where he cannot support Syria and the Iranians who’ve had a bit of a beating off the Israelis may be in the back foot.

There’s been no joined up thinking in central government, the population has been allowed to increase massively but investment in public services such as the NHS hasn’t increased proportionately. Pretty much everything, roads, hospitals, public services are all in a mess.

To make matters worse, we’ve got vacancies in key sectors like care, the NHS, agriculture and food processing (not the highest paid sectors) and we’ve got a sizeable chunk of our indigenous population who don’t want to work and believe their entitled to a life on benefits. Some, have never put a penny but they are more than happy to take out.

I cant see any 1 political party being brave enough to deal with the issue because they’re going to alienate a huge chunk of the electorate, but what we need is major reform of the benefit system.

Support people who lose their job, offer retraining, etc etc, but apply a time limit to the support and if they can’t get a job within say 18 months then the support is reduced and eventually stopped. Disability payments also need to be reviewed and people should be encouraged to work doing what they can, employers given financial support for taking people off the long term sick list and in to work. W

There are huge benefits to working including self esteem, social interaction, sense of purpose, better mental health etc etc, I’m sure we’d also experience less crime as people will be productively employed. Work for the dole would be the order of the day!

Rant over.

I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion, resigning is 100% the right thing to do and is a bit of a throw back to when politicians who were in the wrong did the right thing and resigned.

Should she have ever been selected as an MP and been a Minister…. Well that’s a completely different issue and for the record I don’t think she should have been.

Renewable energy is very cheap, but because the price we pay for electricity is linked to gas which is the most expensive generated electricity it pushes up the cost of renewables.

Looks like NATO are “guarding” Chinese ship at anchor in the Kattegat between Denmark and Sweden as it’s suspected the ship was responsible for damaging the 2 connectors running along the Baltic seabed. It’s claimed the Russians are behind the incident and have “paid” off the Chinese captain.

If, and it’s a big if it can be proved the Russians are behind the damage there going to be ructions.

Asylum Bill hits £5.3 Billion
at 18:40 28 Nov 2024

Today’s immigration figures are shocking, the revision of the net migration figures for the year ending June 2023 to 960,000 is unbelievable. The net migration figure for the year ending June 2024 of 728,000 is also horrendous, we’ve been gaslighted for longer than most of us would care to remember.
The Brexit slogan of “Taking control of our borders…….” Is a a complete and utter @@@@ take. All that’s happened is that we’ve replaced EU migrants with non EU migrants from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and other places.

Immigration does boost the economy, but so would booting several million of the sick and dole.

Is Europe turning ?
at 10:17 27 Nov 2024

The amount of time we’ve spent outside the EU after leaving is a lot shorter than the time we spent in the EU, so I’d expect a comparison of the total numbers to show immigration post Brexit to be lower as the time line is shorter. BUT if you actually look at the numbers who entered the UK over the last few years they are much much higher than they were during our time in the EU.

1.2m arrived in 2023 which equates to a net increase of 700,000, in 2022 it was 1.2m again and a net increase of 765,000 - we never came close to that when we’re in the E.U.
