I don’t disagree with you on his achievements at all underweststand - he has certainly proved himself when it comes to his development of players, both for saints and England. I expect he had an influence over loads of players aside to those you list. If he was coming back to lead our academy then I would be over the moon. But he’s not (or not solely at least). He is going to be responsible for hiring and firing managers, recruiting and shifting players amongst everything else. Has he experience in that? No. I absolutely wish him all the best and hope that I am proven completely and utterly wrong. But, I remain seriously worried about the lack of real experience he and the rest of the management team have in the transfer market. |

I can’t help but feel underwhelmed already by this appointment. Matt is certainly a good academy leader - you can see what he/it achieved over the years he was with us before - however, it’s not academy leadership we need. A Director of Football Operations role has to be different - broader and directly impacting the first team. Does he really have the experience to appoint the manager, approve the signings and make the big calls when things go wrong? We need experienced heads leading the football side - not just good, but inexperienced people. This so feels like our biggest issue at the moment in the club. |

I must say, I really like you write ups Nick - I don’t necessarily agree with all your opinions, but you do give largely a well thought out perspective. On this one, I don’t believe the fault is with MP. You work with the resources you’ve got, and we all knew in the summer that our forward players were lacking. That existed under Puel also, although given his more cautious style of play it never got that much attention. Much as I like Long for his running, he HAS to score goals- and just doesn’t. Charlie has pedigree that suggests he is capable, but fails to deliver much at all. Nathan is simply not a forward - he’s like a Walcott with no finishing ability. Gabbi has the pedigree and skill, but is lost without a quality playmaker to provide. Dusan - fails to deliver the goods, pretty much every game. Then you look at the under 23’s for the potential, and the only attacking glimmer of hope I see is Sims - currently out injured. So I think the squad doesn’t help things at all. I do think we need to sign a creative midfielder and a pacey forward in the January window- someone different to what our current attackers bring. Do nothing and I fear our current position is where we finish in May. |
