Where's the Luton Town (w@nk w@nk w@nk) Match Thread Match Thread?
at 22:19 30 Aug 2024

Great performances all over the pitch, Nardi, Cook, Field stood out for me, Frey clear MoM, what a great spine to the team now.

Really enjoyed that - everyone is definitely working together, you can feel it.

He's been good already this season, much changed form last, but today was another level.

Bullying defenders
Running at defenders
Holding up the ball
Winning headers
Laying the ball off well
Clever runs
Assist
Goal

Bloody hell! I am so pleased for him and us!

Transfer rumours 2024
at 16:17 30 Aug 2024

Dunne was a major, if not the major part of our revival next year. He's been great at right back, and we already have a backup there in Santos (plus Cannon assuming his situation gets sorted, I'd assume Fox could also play there as he played left back).

You'd think he'd be coming in to play, which means no Dunne at right back. Dunne won't shift JCS or Cook at CB (unless they are injured) and he seems better at RB than CB.

Unless we've got him for virtually nothing as a backup I don't really get this signing.

Tonight's Draw - Ball Number 20
at 23:07 28 Aug 2024

I don't mind the Euro teams being kept apart, in fact I wouldn't mind all Prem teams being seeded so they couldn't play each other.

I think most teams then get a good chance of playing a Prem team, which most fans want anyway and good for revenue - that's what the Cups have always been for me, lower league teams getting a chance to beat top League teams.

I do completely disagree with Prem teams, Euro or otherwise, getting home draws, I don't understand that at all. The way they did it tonight with 4 at home and 2 away makes even less sense.

As for our draw, very pleased. Should be a great game, hopefully they rest a few. We all know Eze will score.

Whilst I bow to your Match Thread expertise, surely Connell should just do the Cup run Threads?

I think this is good business for all parties.

Birmingham have a decent L1 striker for 1M that might help them get back up, we have some money for a striker who didn't score much at all for us and he will get to play more at a decent club.

Good luck Lyndon.

Exciting going forwards, Field is going to have to be on his game and more, lot of responsibility on him today.

Lower Loft - which rows stay dry?
at 07:43 24 Aug 2024

Hello

I've always sat in the Ellerslie /Stan Bowles or Upper Loft but we've got season tickets Lower Loft this year as the kids wanted to go more (god knows why after the last few years!).

Anyway, with the torrential downpours of today, we are in row G. Should we come dressed as the fisherman from Deadliest Catch or will we escape the worst of it?

I was going to start a similar thread yesterday. So pleased for him, I never understood why he wasn6rated by some.

Think he had the most tackles in the Championship or some similar record when with us, but also great at some of those short passing moves.

Interesting lineup that are not used to playing together. Opposition can't have planned for it much - bit of an unknown for all concerned.

Pretty mobile in Dembele and Lloyd and Varane also.

Frey has looked decent compared to last year also, I wonder if his physicality might occupy others giving our pact widemen more space.

Can't expect too much from first starts like this, but hard to to get excited about the potential. Decent bench also.

I've always loved the interviews but....I also quite like this new controlled approach.

No false promises a la Fernandes, Beale etc things just confirmed when they happen, no time wasted on rogue comments.

I think we look more professional as a result, which is another tickbox to be taking seriously.

Well the best team one.

They passed the ball around quickly and we struggled to get it back.

Poor marking for the first 2 goals they scored, unlucky deflection for the last one.

Not many positives, but it's just one game. Hopeful Varane and our potential new players can add a bit of pace to us, plus Chair coming back of course, we could be a very different side.

End product and bit of quality in the final third definitely missing for us today (apart from our goal), and strangely off defensively for thhe goals.

West Brom look good I think, they've not created loads but they are getting better going forwards. I feel like they are easily controlling the midfield, I wonder if we will makea change there early on 2nd half.

Hard to judge Celar, he can'd do much out of possession and is getting nothing going forwards.

Defensively though we've been solid against a good side.

I'm nervous for the 2nd half - would definitely take a draw.

New goal kick routine
at 22:58 3 Aug 2024

True, and it's definitely not without risk, but I think the scenario of the striker running in is what you want as effectively it then goes out to someone who is free and you've beaten the first press bit.

My son's a keeper (only 13) and even at his age they are taught to keep the ball until the striker is near and this pass it out. It feels far worse as a parent believe me!

Tactics question
at 21:53 3 Aug 2024

I generally like it, but it very much depends on your keeper and other players being comfortable on the ball, running into space, being available for the pass etc.

McLaren I think tried it with Ingram in goal and a team not suited to it - it was a disaster and painful to watch.

You have to be brave to do it also, as a player and manager. Kicking it long it safer in the short-term and no-one really blames the person giving the ball away at that time, unlike if you do giving it away at passing it out near the goal.

If we do it, you have w to accept we will concede a few goals from it, but hope the positives from it outweigh that, and also that the more we do it the better we will get at it.

I guess ultimately more possession and a higher chance of keeping the ball doing it this way is the aim.

I would as mentioned above still like some variety in terms of chipped passes forward and periodic longer balls to Dunne on the wing - good to keep the other team guessing also.

Ultimately I assume there is some analysis somewhere that if you do this right the net outcome is a positive one. Whilst we won't do it as well as Man City etc, it's also true other teams we will play won't punish us as much as a Liverpool or have as good a press.
