Their first choice is brilliant. Fcking mad. If that tossr really needs some games pick him in one of the 12 dead rubbers you’ve got left while sitting 12th in the league. I’d be fuming if we’d done that.

Millwall keepers sending off on 14:14 - Mar 1 by bosh67 | I think that one is worse. I mean Schumacher meant his one and it was a disgrace but this one honestly could have killed the guy. The most reckless challenge I think I have ever seen on a football pitch. And I've seen a lot. |
Nah sorry Schumacher's was worse. His only intent was to take out the player. Millwall keeper successfully cleared the ball but caught Mateta with his follow through. It's a tough one and I suppose he had to be sent off, but I don't think it was a malicious challenge.

Remember it well - what a cracking game it was. Felt so gutted for the French. That was a sparkling side that went onto win Euro 84. Tournaments in Qatar and forthcoming ones in USA and Saudi a depressing reminder that international tournaments were so much better in those days.

The most gutted I've ever been after a match not involving QPR or England. That was a brilliant French team containing stars such as Platini, Tigana, Giresse, Tresor and Rocheteau. The injustice of the incident with a goal kick being awarded spurred them on to take a 3-1 lead in extra-time but the Germans fought back to 3-3 by the final whistle and of course won on penalties. As a post-script the whole world except the Germans were elated that Italy won the Final 3-1 and the core of that French team went on to win the 1984 Euros. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Great post . Everybody raved about the Dutch teams of 74 and 78 but its French side were off the scale . Mikes more entertaining than than Tikki Takki of the Spanish teams of the 2000s . Tigana and Giresse along with platini. Sumptuous.

So pleased you mentioned that France team circa 1982 to 84, they were such a brilliant team to watch, with Giresse, Platini, etc. West Germany were so industrial during this period but ground out results, the Schumacker assault one of the biggest fouls in World football. If France had got to the 1982 World Cup final no doubt in my mind they would have beaten the Italiens. [Post edited 3 Mar 20:12]

Great memories of that tournament. And amazingly, England put 3 past France in Bilbao in the opening match. Bryan Robson scored in literally first few seconds. I was on a school exchange trip visit during the first half of the tournament in Germany, sharing a room with my German pen pal with all his pics of Bayern Munich, Karl Heinz Ruminegge and Paul Breitner on his bedroom walls. He wasn't a happy bunny when Algeria beat Germany and their game against Austria was so obviously a fix. His dad was Czech and wasn't too happy when England beat them. The Brazil v Italy quarter final in Barcelona was also an incredible match.

I totally agree. It was a great World Cup. That '82 Brazilian side was one of their greatest World Cup teams. It was a joy watching them effortlessly glide their way through the tournament playing "the beautiful game", destroying everyone in their wake. Zico, Socrates, Falcao.... ah, the memories. So unjust was the manner of their exit that year, that FIFA saw fit to overhaul the structure of the second round system for future World Cups. Never again would four European sides fill the semi-final places in the tournament.

The FA are pushing for a longer ban, Millwall are contesting it. Also, I see their fans did a clap for the keeper last night. Strangest club going.

Hmmm yeah I mean back your player if you want to, but even Waw can't resist some virtue signalling I still find this incident a difficult one, I don't think the keeper had any malicious intent, I think it's fairly clear he went for the ball but was unfortunate with his follow through. If it's a clear case of him going for the man and 100% violent conduct then sure consider extending his ban, but in this case I think the normal three game ban is punishment enough?

Yeah, that was a great WC. I was working for the Company who had the catering franchise at Heathrow in those days, so there were a great number of happy chefs and waiters the day after the final. I’ll never forget walking through the kitchens to “ITALIA!, ITALIA!! I’ve still got a retro Italy shirt with 20 on the back that I bought about 25 years ago. They did Brazil 10, Argentina 10, a red England 6, Italy’s was 20, for Paulo Rossi from that WC. Another great no longer with us!

I'm a bit uncomfortable with this. If it hadn't been in a TV game would that have happened? If it had happened at Grimsby v Tranmere on Tuesday night would that have happened?

No. But he's the reserve keeper so how much practical difference will it make?

It might not make a big difference to Millwall, but immediately after the game at Palace they recalled goalkeeper Dillon Adda from his loan at Chesham. Presumably he has gone up the pecking order due to the suspension.

I don't know what that GK was doing kungfu kicking at head hight, got to be a red card by itself. That he caught Mateta high on his head so bad he needed oxygen and 25 stitches to put his ear back in place, made it about the worse tackle I remember seeing in football. He could of killed him. 6 months in jail would be more appropriate than missing 6 games he probably won't have played anyway and is nothing. If he'd done that away from a football he could have been put in the pinky. Hope he gets the message he's not supposed to kicking that high and putting lives at risk.
