Ended up at the mighty Shepshed Charterhouse (now Dynamo). Always surprises me how long he was at the Rs. 7 seasons for his 67 games according to wiki. I suppose he was the 70s/80s version of Shodipo. He is however one of only 14 QPR players to play for the Rs in an FA Cup Final. Albeit for 6 minutes.

Paul Barron was the reason for him being dumped by the club and blackballed by other clubs when he left, according to Clive Walker.

Bizarrely he also come on as sub (natch) to don the gloves and green jersey that season in the 'Battle of Millmoor' after Hucker suffered near GBH at the hands of Ronnie Moore and had to be stretchered off when we were down to ten men. It was the week before the semi-final and thankfully Hucker was okay. [Post edited 6 Nov 2023 16:16]

Had the pace but too many crosses ended up in The Loft. I had my first season ticket in 1980 in the SAR and it was in the same section as the WAGS and Steve Burke's girlfriends were stunning. I also sat next to a former Miss World a couple of times and when I met her again thirty years later she didn't remember me. DJ Campbell was a disappointing striker especially as he was also a fan. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He’s Not The Messiah He’s A Very Naughty Boy XI on 11:20 - Nov 6 by CiderwithRsie | I didn't know that about Channing. At the time I thought he was our best full-back and was always disappointed he didn't nail down a place. There was a lot of players who came out of our youth set-up towards the end of the Gerry Francis/Ray Wilkins era, including Matt Brazier, Quashie, Dichio, and (heresy alert!) Kevin Gallen who had some decent (or more than decent) runs with us but never quite fulfilled their potential IMO. Maybe it was the difference between us surviving the sale of Ferdinand and Wilson (and age catching up with Wilkins, Bardsley, Macca, Barker etc) and going down. I don't know if a better manager than Wilkins (let alone Houston) might have brought them along, or if better use of the Ferdinand money might have given us the players they needed to develop (like Wilkins did with Ferdinand.) Or maybe they just weren't quite as consistently good as they needed to be. Good thread subject, by the way. |
I didn’t know that about JC either and I was in that team you went on to name. A lot of those players would have had much more impact and success if they were fed in to the first team gradually like Gallen and Dichio. But because of sales, lack of form, relegation etc etc a lot of them were thrown in at once and as a group they found it very hard. As regards to Channing, he was a good player, but he really knew it. Only my opinion but when I came into the dressing room full time in June 1991, you notice that some people are polite, some people are loud, some people will talk to you as a young player and some were as flash as can be . JC unfortunately fell into the latter category. It could be that I saw a side of him that wasn’t really him. People are different in that environment. It has to be said that I love the guy for what he did for us then snd just us much now, but our club ambassador was very very flash at times back then . Didn’t show much of a humble side in the dressing room. And that’s what I meant. In the dressing room environment people can be different .

I followed that team closely and many of them went on to have fine careers, albeit down the divisions in some cases, and it was amazing how many of that team became professionals, but there were some really polished players there who had they come into a more setlled first-team environment might have had even better careers, and at Rangers too.

So many of that team did become professionals. Only a few didn’t . I just happened to be one of them 😂😂 The weird one was Marvin Bryan. Big physical very pacey winger who went on to be a centre back for Rotherham . Then a articulated lorry driver

Very interesting, thanks. I'm sure you're right about the group being thrown in at once, it felt like that watching it - all of them looked at least decent individually. I don't know which one of them was you, but I always felt there was a lot of talent there. Maybe the last time that I thought of us having a really strong youth set-up. (Long rant about Alex Ferguson, match finishing after Final Score etc deleted.) Tommy Docherty had done something similar with Clive Allen, Goddard etc in 1979 but of course he did it in the 2nd Division, and we still (just) missed out on promotion.

Marvin was a very dangerous player. I didn't know he ended up centre-back. Couldn't have seen that coming. Sorry you didn't get a pro contract, but thanks for your part in a hugely enjoyable few years. I list the youth team of that era as one of my very favourite Rangers teams and following you all at home and away remains a real highlight and watching you all develop and progress nudged me towards youth coaching in my later years.

Thanks Brian. That actually means a lot . I didn’t really enjoy my 2 years apprenticeship for many reasons but I am immensely proud of it . At the time it was all kind’ve normal but looking back it was incredible to have been inside that incredible dressing room at the time with so many club legends like Ray and Les and Macca etc. In contrast to nearly all apprentices who get released I remember being relieved . I played a couple of years semi pro after a trial with Wycombe and Martin O’Neil didn’t come of anything and then I picked up a guitar and that was me on a different path. Anyway, yes I couldn’t believe when I saw Marv was playing as a centre half . Just didn’t seem right as he was such dangerous winger .

I lived in Myannar for a couple of years and discovered that Kanyuka was playing for a team (Shan United) at the same time. I wrote to his club (in Burmese), asking to be put in touch with him, as I was going to write an article for Dave on AKUTRS. Alas, I didn't get a reply, and as LFW constitutes my social media noise, I didn't chase up on his Twitter or Insta account. I saw him play for us up at Wigan, and he looked promising. But another who just didn't make it, and found his way to Myanmar via stints in the lower leagues, Romania, Ireland and Thailand.
