Gout 20:45 - Jun 15 with 4103 views | Hayesender | Anyone on here suffer/suffered from gout? Had my first attack around March time, and thought I'd broken my big toe at first. That pretty much cleared up until I had another attack a couple of weeks ago, this time going up to my ankle. The pain was so bad I had to go up to Worthing hospital, where I was given some medication. Now that cleared it up, but gave me the sh@#s like you wouldn't believe. Put it this way, I've had to throw out a couple of pairs of pants. Anyway, all has been fine the last few days until a couple of hours ago. Just chilling out in the garden, and my foot and ankle have swollen up again. Don't really fancy taking that medication that makes me s@#t myself again, so just sitting here now with an ice pack on my foot. Any advice would be much appreciated. This thing is bloody painful

Gout on 20:52 - Jun 15 with 4058 views | HAYESBOY | Yep, runs in my family on my Mum's side. First got it when i just turned 50 (5 years ago). Woke up in the middle of the night with searing pain in my big toe on my right foot. Thought I had broken my toe. GP immediately said gout which I thought at the time that only OAP's got it. Was told to adjust diet. Try and stay away from shell fish, cheese, beer and port! Amongst others. I get attacks about twice a year so they wont put me on Alopurinol. Normally on the outside of the big tow but also in my ankle and one in my knee. When it happens it is fcking painful. Alopurinol just regulates the Uric Acid levels. Its the over production of Uric Acid that then crystallises on the bone. Probably been told this by now. [Post edited 15 Jun 2023 20:54]

Gout on 20:53 - Jun 15 with 4034 views | BucksRanger | Only had it the one time around 15 years ago. 1. Drink copious amounts of water. 2. Drink cherry juice regularly. 3. Do not drink alcohol. Good luck. The pain is awful.

Gout on 20:56 - Jun 15 with 4008 views | HAYESBOY | Well I think we should form a support group for the sufferers of Gout in Hayes. Or test the water?

The stuff I was given last week is called colchicine, but as mentioned it really didn't agree with my guts

Gout on 21:24 - Jun 15 with 3931 views | westy | Don’t envy the pain, it sounds awful. Only advice I can give is to perhaps buy some cheap undercrackers until you get the right medication | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Gout on 21:39 - Jun 15 with 3878 views | jeffranger | Yes & it’s F *****g painful & you feel you’ve broken something, not much you do with it but rest
Gout on 21:54 - Jun 15 with 3830 views | stevec | Yeah, it’s absolute agony. Ignore all the advice about giving up alcohol, I’ve been on allopurinol for the last 10 years and as long as you follow the dosage you should be fine.
Gout on 22:12 - Jun 15 with 3787 views | Ranger_1969 | Have had a few bouts of it over the past 5/6 years and can vouch for the pain! Even though it was only a toe that was affected (always the same one) My Dr prescribed Colchicine - always clears up within a few days and no side- effects (for me at least.) I would also say if you still want the odd drink, make sure you drink plenty of water in between, also Wine is better than Beer, apparently....... Cherries/cherry juice also helps prevent it. Good luck! PS Shit! I used to live in Hayes as well........ [Post edited 15 Jun 2023 22:14]

Gout on 22:21 - Jun 15 with 3757 views | johann28 | Quite a bit of it in my family over the years. Here's our conclusions. 1. Water, water and more water. Drink as much as you can stand. With lots of ice and some lemon is pleasant on a hot day. Increasing fluid consumption can kick-start a person’s kidneys to release excess fluid, reducing swelling. Oher clear fluids, such as broths and herbal teas, can also work. No need to cut out alcohol in moderation but go for white wine & dark beer like porter/stout (not lager) rather than red wine or spirits . 2. Over-the-counter pain relievers As you say, the ice pack does reduce the swelling for a bit, but some over-the-counter (OTC) anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen sodium (Aleve), are often good options if the swelling persists. 3. Coffee Some people believe coffee helps by lowering uric acid levels. 4. Diet Many fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation. Some swear by Vitamin supplements like magnesium. Good luck!
Gout on 22:56 - Jun 15 with 3684 views | thame_hoops | I thought I had it once, I went to see a foot specialist who said it was mild arthritis in my big toe. Tested negative for gout. The tests do seem to be wishy-washy I’ve only had one inflammation in the last five years and I was given a steroid injection into the toe (went privately as it was during the Xmas break) Treat it as a wake up call to change your diet/lifestyle. Kick sugar, alcohol, red meats. I found turkey was great, turkey mince in a Bolognese instead of beef. Subtle changes. Good luck

This. Get Allopurinol. You may get further flare ups for about 6 months and think this isn't working but stay with it because when it does you don't get it anymore. But you have to take it every day for ever. No real side effects. Drink lots of water and stay away from alcohol in any great measure and red meats.

Gout on 00:23 - Jun 16 with 3573 views | JamesB1979 | Finally a thread on here when I feel I genuinely know what I’m talking about. I’ve had big toe many times, then ankle, knee and maybe hip. It’s agony. The Doc didn’t say stop drinking just said the first time 1) drink water between every 2 pints and then when I couldn’t walk the next time 2) how about allopurinol? You take that and you get gout for about 2 weeks but then I’m right as rain.
Gout on 00:42 - Jun 16 with 3563 views | komradkirk | yeah , i had a few flare ups of the old gout.very painful and soul destroying.makes the arthritic joint pain seem trivial, that colcha stuff cleared it without the shits. took a spoonful of cider vinegar every day for a while after it cleared which is meant to help in the prevention of another attack. it is an experience i don't wish to have again. no sympathy in work as the rumour was i sat every night with a bottle of red and a wedge of gorgonzola. i haven't changed my diet in any way so a return flare up is like a demon sitting waiting on my shoulder.
Gout on 01:33 - Jun 16 with 3535 views | dixiedean | Just having a bout of it now- big toe joint. I’ve been prescribed Naproxen for it . No side effects although another drug is prescribed with it against stomach problems but I’ve never needed a it . Mine seems to be brought on by dehydration so drinking lots of water seems good advice.
Gout on 09:24 - Jun 16 with 3361 views | StrawberryHillR | Had various bouts of it over the years, which I could usually attribute to a massive day or two on the beers just previously. Managed through painkillers. At the start of lockdown I was basically bedbound for a fortnight with excruciating gout. Once it had calmed down they wanted to put me on Allopurinol, which I did for a month or so, but I realised I was in horrible condition so managed to drop a couple of stone that summer, took myself off the drugs and (touch wood) haven't had it since. Obviously it's different for everybody, but if you are carrying a bit too much timber it is very likely to help if you can shift some of it.
Gout on 11:48 - Jun 16 with 3260 views | TacticalR | I don't suffer from this myself, and was a bit surprised by the amount of sufferers as I thought gout was a rarity. I wondered what the root cause might be and StrawberryHillR has offered an explanation.

Gout on 12:06 - Jun 16 with 3233 views | EastR | Another former sufferer here. Living abroad at the time in my early forties. Out of the blue — ouch- felt like someone had taken a hammer to my big toe. Couldn’t walk up or down stairs without being in agony. Turns out gout is caused by a build up of uric acid in the blood, which crystallises between the joints causing the pain. Can be hereditary or as a result of diet. Common dietary causes: red meat (esp offal and game), alcohol, beer (because of the yeast) and red wine, and some medications such as diuretics. One other trigger is consumption of shellfish. I got it when I was living in an alcohol free zone, no meat (except chicken), but where fresh lobster was available from the local fishermen a couple of quid. They didn’t eat them for religious reasons. We used to do a twice weekly lobster bbq. Soon as I stopped eating them, it cleared up. Great thread if you're a certain age. One on ED anyone?

Gout on 14:31 - Jun 16 with 3145 views | Hayesender | See, this is why I love this forum. We may differ politically, and we may sometimes argue the toss over the most mundane crap, but when it comes to medical ailments, all us 50 + sing off the same hymn sheet. Cheers lads, some excellent advice so far

Gout on 14:36 - Jun 16 with 3138 views | colinallcars | I had an old friend who was a pilot in the RAF. He had gout and called it salmon & trout. The only relief he got was from single malt whisky. Something I can attest to as relief from almost anything apart from liver-related issues.
Gout on 16:25 - Jun 16 with 3057 views | qprmarkoct1966 | Funny that you mention Salmon , that causes mine to flare up. Bloody painful , had it in the big toe , both feet and ankles at the same time and was in a right old state. Drink plenty of water , i take Naproxin , can not get it over the counter but any anti inflamatory should help. The joys of getting older !
Gout on 09:58 - Jun 17 with 2812 views | Rebalhoop | Cider always seemed to be the trigger for my attacks, which is a bummer coz I love the stuff. Naproxen sorted it out after 2/3 days.
