GALLEN WAS RIGHT...... on 21:32 - Mar 5 by JPC | I’ve been critical of Gray in the past, but watched closely today. He made a lot of great runs. The one player who regularly looked for him was Hendrick. I love watching Illy and Willy, but they’ve become a little self indulgent. That ball is not getting in the box enough, |
Yep , he's become a target whatever he does, he missed a chance today, it wasn't that easy, but like you I thought he had a decent game. Jan - we were 2nd top scorers in the league, so 'foresight' would tell you that perhaps that wasn't our priority, especially playing one up front, which if you actually listened to MW was his explanation. He already had to NOT play 2 strikers every match, didn't fancy making that 3. Hindsight is always so much easier than foresight!

Fellow ref I was with the other night was a Torquay fan - his view on Armstrong, was, yeah he's ok ( 2 goals) but nothing more than that and that's in a league below. I think its only natural, but the 'solution' is always someone who is not in the side. As others have said, its frankly stupid to blame this slump on ONE player.

Then you need to make sure you score the majority of the ones you create. That's what a good striker will do. But to be honest, we just aren't playing well enough to get anything at the moment.
GALLEN WAS RIGHT...... on 22:32 - Mar 6 with 1786 views | Northernr | SIGN A STRIKER. So easy. Just like that. The OP mentions Gallen so just to be clear I'm not referring to him specifically, more the general 'oh it's just that simple and easy' tone of QPR social media on these things. Sign a striker? Why didn't I think of that!? You're a genious. Which striker? From where? For how much? And if he's so good, and available, and affordable, why isn't everybody after him? Why is his club willing to let him go in the middle of the season? Look at the main strikers that moved in our division in January... West Brom signed Daryl Dike - big unit, good player, transformative potentially. They spent £8m on him, he's played a game and a half so far, out long term injured, they haven't won or scored for seven games. They brought in Andy Carroll, on God knows how much, to cover that injury as well, and look at the results. Thick end of £15m gone there in transfer fees and wages, and they literally haven't scored a goal for a month, their season is fcked. Boro, everybody's darlings, Chris Wilder (brilliant, not denying it), got Aaron Connolly from Brighton, who I kind of like in a pugnacious, objectionable sort of a way, and spent the best part of £3m borrowing Balogun for a bit. Between them they have one goal in 23 appearances now in a team playing seriously well and winning games. Wilder is often going back to Whatmore and Sporar who he had there anyway. Connolly and Balogun both subbed without scoring yesterday again. If Boro don't go up, what do we reckon? £6m in loan fees and wages committed? And come the summer you own neither player... Of course, one of them scores in the play off final, who cares, all worth it, Clive looks a dick again. But we got ourselves into this state making gambles exactly like that. Doyle, Maiga, Keane... Bournemouth signed Keiffer Moore, another player I quite like, and would have liked here at various moments when we nearly got him. But they spent £4m on that, he's managed to make the field once so far, is yet to score for them, and still has as many Covid absences as goals over the past two years. £4m - even if we wanted to, we can't do that. Cardiff signed Hugill, spraying chances around yesterday, and we already know we cant afford that because, well, we tried. Loyal Taylor has gone to Birmingham and got three goals in his first four games - he's also 31 and on £30k a week. Sam Surridge went to Stoke for £5m last summer, did nothing, has now gone to Forest at a loss, and done nothing - four goals in 30 apps this season, nothing in six for Forest. Forss went to Hull. Now that I would have been very interested in, though I suspect those petty minded dicksplats wouldn't have entertained the idea of sending him here. Still, one goal in six for Hull, given by the technology against our hapless lot a week ago. Not exactly cutting the division apart. It's so easy to just sit on socials, podcasts, websites, message boards etc and say "sign a striker". January is notoriously sht for doing business a reasonable value - because if they're any good, why are they available mid season? Which striker do you mean? And how much would they cost? Name me one who moved in January who's been an unqualified, affordable success? Ikpeazu maybe, as an impact sub at Cardiff? And, well, do you think he fits in this team? We're working on a budget, we spent almost all of that in the summer, and everybody was delighted by it. A lot of the same people now absolutely torching Johansen and Austin were exactly the same social accounts saying they must be signed at all costs last summer, which they were, which is why there isn't now budget space to sign one of these mythical strikers who's just kicking about desperate to come here on affordable money in January. If you're going to say "sign a striker", specify which one, and for how much. And if we do then go and do it and it doesn't work out as you thought (Austin), then don't immediately jump back on that "SIGN A STRIKER" bandwagon again.

Exactly, same as Dike. SIGN A STRIKER. £12m+ committed to two of them there, both dead on arrival basically. He's not anywhere near Gray yet, especially since I think Gray is getting very unnecessary stick. He's the ok player I expected. But....I'm still curious though, I agree entirely about the 'sign a striker' stuff being nonsense, but I said yesterday we had nothing off the bench. would it have been any worse sticking Kargbo or Sinclair Armstrong there? Kargbo isn't really that good, he's a kid trapped in the body of a heavyweight boxer and Sinclair Armstrong is 18 so who knows. But its where we are at the moment with fit players and bringing on Dozzell for Field doesnt make us more attacking chasing a game. [Post edited 6 Mar 2022 22:53]

So far, two goals in eight on loan at Torquay. One week of first team training (that's it). And at Hampton in pre-season I stood behind the dugout for the last 20 minutes and listened to Andy Impey literally talk the lad through a friendly game with a Conference South team - stand there, go there, run now, stop now, do this, don't do that, be wider, be narrower. It was like watching a guy drive a remote control car around. He's young, very young, he's raw, very raw, let him develop. Let's be honest, the big mistake that can't yet speaks its name was signing Austin on a permanent contract. Very few of us were brave enough to openly call it at the time (look at the grief Flo Lloyd Hughes got), but this season has been the nagging, worst case scenario come true with him - more of a vague black cloud than an actual threat on the pitch, and taking up who knows how much of the budget in the process. (And next's year too.) Talk about being careful what we wish for. And Gray was another gamble that hasn't worked. I wouldn't claim to have a list of obvious, in-budget targets who would now be putting away 20 a season, but the shame is that we've done brilliantly with smartly researched buys and inspired punts everywhere else on the pitch, even if the players concerned are currently very out of form. But you get the strikers wrong and you're always going to come undone eventually. And we did and we have. Still have total respect for Warburton and the set-up at the club and I don't envy them the job. It's just a real shame.

I am not jumping on a band wagon .I was posting that we needed to add to the three misfiring strikers in Dec . I also was the only one posting that I would drop the lot of them then Warburton promptly did just that so he must have the same reservations. Its not forr fans to suggest names or shut up .We have a recruitment dept for that it their job. We loaned Austin at this point last season apparently within budget and 3 others to boot .It kept us up and now we back off when we had a real chance . What is the point of the Hendrik loan and how much are we paying As you say it may not have worked plenty misfire but surely worth a punt .. IMO

So it's not for the supporters to say who, but it is for the supporters to demand somebody? Who? Where? This is what I'm saying. If loads of brilliant strikers had moved around in January and we hadn't got involved I'd be with you, but there weren't. I'll whip the club when I think they've done badly - on another thread I mentioned Ng and Pickering moving from Crewe cheaply to Cardiff and Blackburn at a time when we're reliant on two aging wing backs - but I don't see how you can sit there and just go... SIGN A STRIKER. Ok, who? Well, that's for the recruitment team to decide. The recruitment team, who have done bloody well for us in the last few years, looked at it and didn't think there was a striker within our budget who was worthwhile. Honestly, if somebody comes on here and says "what about..." and shows me somebody who did move and was affordable and does fit our profile and budget and is doing well I'll stick my hands straight up and say immediately 'yeh, I'd prefer that to watching Andre Gray run offside and Charlie Austin slob about'. But, off the top of my head, I can't think of one. It's like 'I'd like a unicorn for the back yard'. Yeh, sure, wouldn't we all. Where from? How much?

Austin hasn't worked out this season but wouldn't call it a big mistake, he's helped bring about a big change in the mindset behind the scenes and even in a poor season by his standards has scored some important goals. The fella from Villa who went to Preston is the one who feels like one we could have got but for a team that plays one up front most of the time signing a 4th forward did seem unnecessary at the time

Also, he only made the starting eleven for less than half of those games. London born, 22 years old and coming into the last year of his contract. Also, Brizzle need money. |
Yes, I always think he looks quality but no longer "under the radar", I don't think. Not that I know what our budget is, but would be surprised if we could get him for a good price and without competition from other teams. Wouldn't be surprised if they had bids at January but surely they will cash in this summer

GALLEN WAS RIGHT...... on 22:57 - Mar 6 by DannytheR | Let's be honest, the big mistake that can't yet speaks its name was signing Austin on a permanent contract. |
Gray has 6 and has Clive has pointed out if that 'hasn't worked', there's an awful lot of strikers signed in this league who 'haven't worked' Think we're in danger of letting a bad month (and a bit) cloud our judgement - 3rd highest scorers in the league maybe points to the fact that picking over the faults of our strikeforce in ever greater detail and throwing in wild guesses (because however you dress it up, that's what they are) about salaries maybe isn't the way to go?
