“Stay Alert” on 22:13 - May 10 by Sadoldgit | Just read an interesting comment from a teacher. The government are using teachers as baby sitters again. Johnson isn’t big on detail is he? He is really great on the big picture either. Blister and waffle cut it normally with him, but these aren’t normal times and all he is doing is confusing people even more. Why is it important to stay at home in Scotland, NI and Wales but not here (as long as we are alert)? My boss sent me a text tonight and asked me what it meant. We can go back to work as we can’t work from home but he runs a shop and there was no mention of non essential shops opening from tomorrow. The whole point of being PM is to properly articulate information. All the way through this so far Johnson has made a real pig’s ear of imparting information. It’s almost as if he doesn’t have a mental grasp on what is going on. |
Shops can’t open until June as long as the R rate is under control.

The strategy is very very clear, it’s been clear all along, and it’s the right strategy for a simple reason - there is no other strategy available. They can’t openly say they are going to unlock until the hospitals fill up, but if no vaccine is ever going to be available (which must be the working assumption) we need to get the economy going and keep the hospitalization level manageable while we build a naturally immune population. This is the hard truth, but it’s not a hard truth the public (or the left who would fan the flames of panic) can hear in plain words. |
You can recover from a recession or losing your job or going bust, there's no coming back from dying.

And? The fact is that a vaccine would be great, but it might not happen. We can’t go into hibernation so we have to work on certainty’s. The certainty (or where the evidence is increasingly pointing) is that once we have had it we become immune to getting it again. Once enough have had it the disease has nowhere to go and it dies out. The mortality rate is currently circa 0.75% so this isn’t a bad disease like the Black Death which wiped out 60% of Europe. It’s something we can cope with and as understanding increases I’d expect treatment will improve which should suppress the mortality rate under 0.5%.

It’s going to climb here too. IT IS A DISEASE WITH NO VACCINE AND NO CURE Do we just shut the country down and keep our fingers crossed we find a cure no matter how long that takes? I really do despair of how ignorant the population are if there are lots of people who think like you do. You are a prime example of why the government can’t tell it as it is. You simply couldn’t cope. [Post edited 10 May 2020 23:06]

This is the bit that so many are naive too. Recessions, losing jobs and going bust will cause tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of deaths from Poverty and Mental Health related deaths. Generally speaking, it's those who are furloughed or wouldn't be affected by a further lockdown who campaign for it to be extended, without taking in to account the life cost for a f*cked economy. To be fair poverty, obesity, mental health and alcoholism cause a lot more deaths in this country and the Tories have shown scant disregard for these issues over the years

It hasn't though. I'd suggest probably checking for yourself rather than reading left wing newspaper articles. They recorded 555 cases yesterday, which is the 2nd lowest day for new cases since March 11th. They had 30,000 active cases when they loosened lockdown, they now have 19,000. The last 2 days they have recorded their lowest daily deaths on each day for over 6 weeks. I do think that some who oppose Boris/Tories are almost obsessed with the outcome of this virus being as horrendous as possible just so they can bash the government a bit more.

Wrong, I cannot stand Boris or his useless cronies that show less leadership than the captain if my sons under 10 team but of course I want this virus under control and eradicated What I can’t abide us the floundering and muddled messages and irresponsible behaviour from these fools that some here elected to LEAD our country

OK so explain why on several occasions on this forum, tory opposers have claimed that there is a spike in Germany and cases are on the rise? Facts show a completely different story. Suggests that the left have become obsessed with finding bad news stories, so much so that they have even started making them up.

That’s too simplistic, but there’s a degree of truth in there. I’m furloughed and loving it, as are work mates I’m keeping in touch with. If we get another 3 weeks off then happy days. I don’t think enjoying time with family and not getting bored at home is something to be embarrassed about. The only people saying they can’t wait to get back to work are either saddos, or liars that will say it in earshot of management to suck up to them. However there is also genuine concern on health and safety grounds. This is where having good trades union representation is such a worthwhile thing. We have to learn to live with this virus but crucially employers must mitigate the risks by adapting working practices and providing PPE or potentially face corporate manslaughter charges.

“Stay Alert” on 13:33 - May 10 by Occasional_Showers | Because the official unofficial message now is to go out but the official official message is still to stay in. In other words they secretly want everyone to go out even though they are having to say they want everyone to stay in. It’s quite clear when you think about it. Once everyone starts following the official unofficial advice and start going out and ignoring the official official advice it will mean that the lockdown is lifted and when the official unofficial advice becomes the official advice the advice we were unofficially following will be what we are doing anyway. |

We live in a “if it’s free i’lll take it” society. If you open a food bank a slob will use it. If you open 10 food banks more slobs will waddle along to grab some free food. How many food bank slobs own a mobile phone? Or smoke?

Why are people talking about this phantom 'spike' in Germany? There isn't one. Cases will go up and down for a few weeks due to data collecting but there is no spike in Germany?! Seriously... they are at their lowest daily cases and daily deaths at the moment for nearly 2 months. Where are people getting this opinion from that their cases are rising?! It's bizarre.

There hasn’t been a spike and there won’t be a spike. We are living in an advanced western country. We have experience of the virus now. Scientists are watching it like hawks. What we saw before was a fairly sharp rise in cases followed by a plateau and a gradual fall. That’s what will probably happen again. We might have to repeat this 8 or 10 times until we achieve herd immunity and the virus has nowhere to go. This isn’t what people want to hear but it’s always been the plan because a vaccine is just a hope. [Post edited 11 May 2020 8:44]
