Experience needed, but where ? 10:58 - Aug 7 with 3195 viewsGalileo

Looking through the squad we do seem to lack experience in almost every department.

Without resorting to any accurate numbers i'd guess our players each have approximately the following number of career first team appearances

Ingram 50-70
Lumley 25

Kakay 5
Furlong 50
BFG 200
Lynch 100-150
Hall 100-125
Bidwell 200
Baps 300

Mass 200
Scowen 250
Manning 30-50
BOS 30-50
Wheeler 100
Goss 15
Pavel 200
Freeman 200
Cousins 200
Chair 5
Eze 40

Oteh 3
Wash 150
Smyth 15
Smith 200
Sylla 200

There's plenty of potential there but we are having to deal with the here and now, not the future. So where do we parachute in our 'experienced' recruits Steve is craving ?

Keepers are untouchable.
Find a centre half with a career as long as Matt Connolly's.
Midfield, that's very difficult to juggle around with. lots of bodies in there, who gets dropped, who's future gets put on hold for a new man ?

Up top I cannot see us getting anyone in. We all want a 15 goal a season man, well they go for up to 10 million these days, Waghorn and Bamford are prime examples. We should play to the strengths of Smith and Sylla, both capable of 15 per season although not as a pair. Look how well Murray did at Brighton last year playing alongside a couple of wide men. Send Oteh out on loan, believe he is a goal getter, just needs a bit more of that commodity we are short of, Experience.

Appreciate anyone with the 'answer' letting us all know, and don't forget to pass it onto Steve.

Although young, our two goalkeepers have some 250 first team appearances between them.
Matt Ingram made around 140 appearances for Wycombe alone.

Poll: Are we staying up?

Lynch actually has over 300 football league appearances!

I would say that 7 out of the starting team last Saturday are very experienced - Leistner, Lynch, Bidwell, Freeman, Scowen, Luongo & Smith & may have all played more than 200 matches.

I would agree that the rest of the squad (apart from Baptiste) are probably below that number, but the chances of us playing more than 4 youngsters at one time is a little remote.

I fear this is a bottom 6 side. (where within that 6 is the worry)

It's going to be a long hard slog, especially as the embargo looms large.

We need some the youngsters to be "on it" for the full season which rarely happens.

Still think we need to get a CB in and another CF.

Anyway, what happens happens!

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

It's true that, although Smithies may be credited with that to a large extent.

I get the feeling that we've not only got a League One squad, we may actually be a League One club. Now I'm not having a go here, but we have financial troubles, as yet no green light on the stadium we need to generate the revenues we need to compete, our gates are pretty low (aren't they? By Championship standards), and by any measure our neighbours are pulling away from us.

I don't think that anyone would be too surprised to see us in League One and there for a good number of years too. I think that there are three worse teams than us in the Championship this season, but I think we'll always be struggling until we get that stadium (+training ground issue) sorted. This is what I take from Lee Hoos' words on the matter of our future anyway.

‘morbid curiosity about where this is all going’

I think our problem is CM, more to the point DM, we have no natural DMs, only young Owens, getting rid of Ariel and not replacing him with an identical play was a mistake

Not sure how many games you managed to see on the Internet or Satellite but Scowen did an excellent job last year as a DM for the majority of the games he played, he's the best we've had in that position since Shaun my Lord and far better than Ariel who always looked off the pace to me.....

Lol, I can be found at LF most Saturdays, scowens, by his own admission isn’t a DM and prefers to play further forward, to play that position, especially the way we want to set up, you need a truly defensive minded player in that position.

Think Scowen is byenlarge excellent in that position. I would like to have a more physical presence in midfield ahead of him but we’d clearly need to sell to get that person in.
