Remain With or Leave the EU on 00:10 - Jun 10 by Kerouac
I think Eddie Izzard has just taken us one step closer to leaving. Remarkable that he was put forward by 'Remain' to try and persuade the masses. His performance and attitudes just about summed up what the average Joe/Josie is so fukking sick of from politicians in this country and the EU.
Some words; arrogant, stupid, childish, naive, snobby, rude, shallow, self-obsessed, shameless, patronising, hypocrite, on another fukking planet.
This debate, coupled with the itv debate on earlier, plus most of the arguments remain put forward are from a very aggressive, put down the uk manner. These people seem desperate to keep us in. Why is this?
Ever since my son was... never conceived, because I've never had consensual sex without money involved... I've always kind of looked at you as... a thing, that I could live next to... in accordance with state laws.

Because they realise we're in a World of pain if we leave.
Recession engineered by ourselves, marvellous all because we don't want so many of Johnny Foreigner coming in.
My father voted labour and his father voted labour and his father voted labour so I vote labour

Unlike, of course, the lies that the Leavers continue to spread.
Apparently the whole of the £350 million pounds a week that we'll save (which is a lie) will go to the NHS (another lie).
Also the inclusion of Turkey waiting to join the EU on the leaflet we received this morning. It is factually correct that they asked about joining a long time ago (not certain of the date) but the fact that they've, so far, achieved just one of the thirty or so criteria to be eligible to join is ignored. And, in recent years they've regressed even further away from being in a position to be considered (in political and human rights terms).
Of course what the Leavers are hoping is that some people will be horrified at the idea of the UK being invaded by 70 million Turks and will vote to leave as a result. Amazingly there are some people around who are that simple minded.

In my circle I have been something of an anomaly ....most of my family and friends are Labour. My family are council estate manual labour Labour and the in-laws are the middle-class champagne socialist types.
I stood out as the card carrying Lib Dem as it was but being a Lib Dem who disagrees with his party on the subject of Europe was a particularly unusual position.
On this subject my parents are split, the in-laws and my friends were unanimously for 'Remain'. All were confident that 'Remain' would win quite comfortably....
For months I've been saying that not only would we vote 'out' but that it wouldn't even be close. An opinion which was ridiculed.
As we get closer I feel more and more confident that I will be proved right. The penny is starting to drop with some of those in the Labour Party now too. - They've been complacent - They've lost touch with what the man on the street thinks/feels - Their thinking has become lazy, unquestioning. For the Labour Party, to vote 'out' makes you; a right-winger, a bigot, xenophobe, racist even...makes you a "little Englander", parochial, ignorant etc.
There was a dinner party at my house for the in-laws, a large extended family, where everyone was laughing at UKIP, frequently the word "ignorant" was used. I decided to conduct a few tests. I asked them a few questions about the governance of the EU; the structure, the roles and their functions, the names of the Presidents, the names of the Political Groups in the European Parliament...........and then I took it wider - who was president of the ECB? - who were the leaders of various European states? - whether these leaders represented parties that were considered left/right wing in their countries
Do you know what I found? These people who dismissed UKIP as "ignorant" didn't know the first thing about European politics....and when confronted with their ignorance dismissed it all as unimportant, blissful ignorance put forward as a legitimate political position.

Good post!, In my family the older generation(retired) are more in favour of remain, but everyone under 50 wants out.
Even when you know, you never know?

Regarding the three questions you asked your family members, it's not ignorant for the average person not to know these things yet still believe in the institution.
Do you think those same people could name, with certainty, the name of the UN Secretary General? Or what countries are permanent members of the UN Security Council? Or where the headquarters or NATO are? Should we pull out of the WTO or IMF because the average member of public doesn't know where the headquarters are or who is the head of these organisations?
All of these multi-national organisations have huge influence upon us, and significantly limit our choices on a range of issues.
If this is your barometer as to whether we should stay in an organisation or not, it looks like we need a few more referendums....

Only brexiters apparently.
Really?
The website was down for the last 1 hour and 45 minutes only. (214,000 people applied to register in this time) It was then opened, unconstitutionally, for 2 whole days and 437,000 people registered to vote.
The 'Remain' campaign have long claimed that the more people who register to vote the more likely they are to win. Coincidence?
At the end of the day those trying to register last minute and those who were not even interested in registering....until they heard about the site crashing and the deadline being extended....are not the most switched on politically literate people. This is why it suits the 'remain' campaign that they were allowed to come in under the radar. A lot of them are easily manipulated, politically ignorant, young people. Check out the 'remain' campaign's attempts to woo these voters; http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/may/24/ravin-chattin-roamin-eu-remain-c
In short; Do you like drinking? Partying? Cheap Holidays and screwing? Do you like mobile phones and dislike being ripped off? #Vote'In'
This whole extension to the deadline thing stinks IMO.

Surely you should be happy with the fact that the Government is trying to get as many people to vote as possible?

People with seemingly no interest of voting until the last minute? The figures clearly show that over 200k registered after the deadline extension who would not have registered in time.
As a young man with a young family, I am genuinely confused about which way to vote. I'm a little fed up with being scaremongered about immigration all the time. I see it as an issue, but i think it's being used to scare the right leaning minds of young Britain who are so petrafied of immigrants all being muslims with radical ideas it's insane. My friend turned to me the other day and said about the Turks coming over if we remain. Does anyone know a website i can use to find a list both for and against the EU?
I'm watching the debates and QT and I even have an A level in Politics, but I am only hearing about immigration and it's quite annoying really.
My initial thoughts were to remain as I believe leaving will make things such as imported foods, holidays etc more expensive to me and as I have a young family (both me and my fiance are PT studying degree, working full time with a child and one on the way.) I don't want life to become more expensive for us than it already is. I'm not sure how much this Brexit will affect me or my families future in the long and short run so I would be very grateful if someone could supply me with such a website that I could make an informed decision for me and my family..
cheers

To be totally ignorant on a given subject but still think you know better and can ridicule the opinions of those who are interested in the subject and have taken the time to inform themselves....is breathtakingly arrogant.
The man on the street has had enough of being talked down to and is going to take the opportunity to kick the arses of those breathtakingly arrogant, complacent, pompous tossers as hard as he can.
Apparently the Labour party can't believe that when they knock on doors in their heartlands, Labour voters are telling them they'll be voting out. How is that possible?

Wales are playing at the Euros, we are the underdogs facing a team with big names in it who all pundits are agreed are fitter than us and will definitely have an advantage if we go to extra time. We play the game of our lives and have the lead with 2 minutes left.... a player from the other team goes down injured for the last 2 minutes. The referee takes it upon himself to add 48 minutes injury time. The fitter team goes on to equalize and win.

That's a very legalistic dare I say German way of looking at things Bluey
No, it's a fair and just way of accounting for the inconvenience.
The extension is symbolic of the farcical way it's been run. A close result could even potentially be subject to legal challenge based upon this.
I was amused previously that EU nationals were receiving registration cards despite being ineligible to vote. Processes clearly not dealing well with non British nationals...

That's probably a result of the tight deadline set for whatever reason by Cameron. It also resulted in the fact that UK nationals who are living in the EU who have not registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 yrs are not entitled to vote in the referendum. A case was brought by a 90 year old war veteran living in Belgium. The Govt cited "organizational" problems of registering such citizens. It's widely thought that the pensioner would win an Appeal but that would be after the referendum vote took place. I don't hear the Leave camp making much of a fuss about that!

Right, that's your opinion and it is to be respected.
But my point remains that your barometer as to whether a person can have an opinion (or even a strong opinion) on a subject is whether or not they can name the leaders. And I'm suggesting that you are going to find that most people don't know the leaders or countries involved in some of the most important organisations and treaties we are party to.
My grandma, who knows nothing about the EU and has absolutely no idea what it can or cannot do, has fallen for the Daily Express and Nigel Farage hook, line and sinker and she cannot wait to vote leave. Given that she wouldn't pass any test that you gave your family, is she too ignorant to form a strong opinion as well?
