One player we need back next season on 07:26 - Apr 26 with 1540 views | AnotherJohn | Back on topic though, Michu has been playing 90 minutes most weeks and the only recent game he missed was through suspension. It may be a poor league, but there are plenty of cloggers putting in heavy tackles and he hasn't been crocked yet. I'm not saying he will get back to the EPL, but if he gets to the end of the season without breaking down then I think a higher-level team in Spain will give him a chance next season. He is doing a lot better for Langreo in terms of goals and assists than Trundle did for Neath. One player we need back next season on 21:45 - Apr 25 by jackrabbit | This topic begs the question, what has happened to the quality of our scouting operation? How can we go from uncovering gems like Michu and Bony to bringing in mediocrity like Eder and Gomis. Even our 'lesser' discoveries like JDG, Pablo H, and Chico were an advance on the more recent equivalents that have joined the club. Did Brendan take our whole scouting department to Liverpool? |
Did our board feel the need to take greater control over our acquisitions after the bunfights with Laudrup and Tutumlu?

Dear Me mun. De Guzman isn't capable of Briton or Corks workrate either nowhere near, he's a flatrack bully who hides when the chips are down, unfortunately Fer seems the same, maybe its a Dutch thing. |
With all due respect Maxy, you're talking out of your arse. De Guzman was a huge contributor to our success over the Laudrup era and a player we still haven't adequately replaced two seasons later. Few more "flat track bullies" like him we could do with.

Opinions innit, De Guzman ended up mostly on the bench l wonder why that was? he had his moments lm not gonna hide from that what in fairness he was good at hiding. At the end of the day he's not a player l particularly like, but he can't be placed in the same category as either Brits or Cork, Ki yes but he's been about as much use as a chocolate tea pot this season.

He started seven of the last ten games he was here. Then went to the World Cup, starting for the Dutch in a 5-1 win over Spain. But yeah, obviously great at hiding. Britton and Cork are defensive midfielders. Ki isn't.

One player we need back next season on 23:35 - Apr 25 by GeoffThom | Well considering that's the mid we've got doesn't say s lot does it, like I said go have a good look at his goals and come back to me and I bet you were jumping up and down like the rest of us at his wonder goal against valencia |
I was indeed Geoff, people seem to be blinded by his goals and yes he could score goals good ones at that free kicks included. But if you think about his contributions in lots of other games it all levels out to him being bang average at best, it's all about opinions, but you can't label him in the same brkt as Cork or Leon, he can't match their work rate either. Anyway it's a no from me and lm in the no camp with Michu as well not for the same reasons, l might add, our opinions doesn't matter anyway the club will move in the direction that they want to.

We're not gonna agree on JDG, that's fair enough and lve already said that both Brits and Cork are different players, Ki is a Centre Mid as well lve said that as well, so we agree on those three at least, I'd take De Guzman over Ki this yr though, would he have made a difference in our struggle though Mmm

Of course he would have made a difference! One of our problems this season has been goals from midfield other than Siggy. De Guzman would almost certainly have scored more goals than Britton, Cork, Fer and Ki put together. And how you can question his workrate, I'm astonished. Think you need to go back and check the stats for distance covered in games and I think you'll find JdG up there every game. And if you think about him being relegated to the bench towards the end of his time with us, Monk had just taken over as manager, enough said. Dear me. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Ki is a Defensive Midfielder minus the defensive part. He's played deep for the majority of his career, and always looks more comfortable sitting at the base of the midfield. He has the technical ability to influence things further forward (which Cork lacks) but he's not a natural box to box player imo. Lacks the instinct for it, which his why pairing him with Shelvey worked better than Cork or Britton. They could share the attacking responsibility. More a Carrick than a Cattermole.

the flat track bully line makes me smile, we are a flat track team, if we have a player who only performs well against so called bottom half teams then at least we know we'll win most of those games and be safe for another season

Main problem has been is not having a striker capable of regularly hitting the back of net and wish people would stop putting Cork and Briton in the same bracket as JDG, they're different players neither player has ever been goalscorers odd goals yes but they're not therefor their goals, Ki has scored goals quite regularly apart from this season but he's been away with the fairies most of the season, midfield is an urgent area of concern for me this summer as well as defence and attack, but De Guzman wouldn't be my choice, l accept others have different views, but that's my view.

This. We should have done far more to sign De Guzman permanently when he was here on loan. We wouldn't pay the asking fee yet we paid more for both Fernandez and Paloschi. It remains to be seen what he'd be like now though after all his injury problems.

The main problem has been playing a woeful midfield shape utterly unsuited for most of the players we have. That, a tediously slow style of play to go with it and possibly the worst coaching staff ever assembled by a Premier League club until December. People can bitch about the strikers as much as they like. It would have taken a Bony to even begin getting something out of the kind of service they've lived off.

There are elements of truth to both sides of this. The pedestrian build up play and lack of clear cut chances created clearly haven't helped Gomis. He isn't an intricate pass and move type striker, to get goals out of him you need to play him through or whip crosses in to him. He isn't going to take a ball on his chest, turn a man and get a shot away. We persisted in playing him like he was Bony for far too long. The other side of the coin is it's very difficult for our players to provide the service he needs. He can't hold the ball up and he can't beat a man. Unless you play him through he gets the ball stuck under his feet and doesn't get a shot away. Players can't make runs off him because he doesn't retain possession. We need to find a way of playing, stick to it and sign players that suit it. At the moment half the team are suited to Laudrup style football, half to Monk. I'd think we need to sign more creative midfielders as well as a more competent (versatile) striker to be honest.

They were all laudrup a and tutu s signings weren't they. Once they went we lost our niche market for being a la liga club in the prem league providing the perfect potential stepping stone for good technical players to dip into the British game. One of the biggest failings for me was not tapping into his legend status abroad a lot more. Laudrup dropped off a bit as we know, but only due to an Europa league campaign and injuries, which returned in time to turn us around. Laudrup had director of football at SCFC stamped all over him , we really dropped the ball on that IMO . I know for a fact his family were happy being here, we should have made a lot more of that but I think everyone's ego got in the way and here we are now seeing the end result. Laudrup, the club and some senior players needed heads banged together, but as we have seen recently there is a lot of personal agenda going on, even at board room so it clouded things even further, Throw in an opportunist like monk ,hey presto, cluster fook scenario . I think on reflection we kind of know we missed a trick there. We were on the front cover of the top Spanish football magazines alongside Barca and real , that's the pull we missed out on, and all done on a budget too.

Laudrup had to go. His managerial record shows that. He seemed to get itchy feet wherever he went. I thought bringing Monk in for the Cardiff game was a masterstroke but didn't expect him to get the job permanently. The 8th place the following season was whatever you would call the exact opposite of a blessing in disguise. His inexperience and stubbornness cost us big time and we are paying for it now.

Paloschi isn't an out and out striker. He is a #10 who plays up front because the other options are Gomis, Eder and Ayew. He will be fine playing alongside or behind a decent striker.

Bit puzzled by that assertion too. We didn't pay £8m for someone to play behind a striker. We've already got loads of those.
