Last season was his best for us (no, Marseilles doesn't count, settle down!) but for him to describe his "professional standards" as "sky high" is just a joke.

Joey Barton on 18:17 - Jan 20 by SimonJames | Fact of the matter is that, even though he is a tw@t, it WAS a poor team and he generally made more of an effort than most. Interesting that two of the players that got slagged off the most last season, Barton & Zamora, were picked up by teams that are doing better than us. And they seem to be playing better as a result. Actually, Zamora is joint top goal scorer at Brighton. |
I've commented on this before here. I think this says more about us as a club than anything. Why are our standards so low, why do we allow players to coast, why dont we have more discipline and how are the ego's allowed to flourish within the walls of W12? Weak from the top down. Dyche and Burnley may well have been the only show in town for Barton. Even so, they've quite obviously laid down harsh ground rules as he's behaving himself. However, he wont be able to help himself and the time will come when his BS will flow in 140 letters. Zamora seems to have spent the summer swimming in holy water. I refuse to believe he was permanently carrying an injury with us yet can feature on a regular basis for Brighton and bag the goals he has. It stinks. The one I really hope excels is Caulker. Keep that plum out of the boozers and casino's and get him in the shop window so we can recoup something for him, even if its two bob and a conker. Cheers!

Difference is Lblock is that Burnley are paying Barton a fraction of what we did He can't swan around on 80 large giving it the biggun picking and choosing when he can be arsed to have a good game , Barton as good as admitted he only came for the dough They also have manager in dyche who is the polar opposite of bagpuss , he won't put up with the west London pirlos antics I think with JFH he will soon weed out the deadwood, next season will be a lot different , players won't be able to swan around doing what they want I can see us being a super fit club

Joey Barton on 20:51 - Jan 20 by Northernr | Facts speak for themselves. During his sky high person season he took every free kick and corner we had while he was on the pitch across 28 appearances. For that we got one goal (in the last min of a game we'd already won) five assists and a red card in a crucial match (fourth time in three years with the club) for feeling up another player. |
Sky high person season. LOL.

It's not a fact that he generally made more effort than most, that's your opinion. Actual facts - 28 appearances, taking the vast majority of the set pieces, and yet he managed one goal and five assists. It's also a fact that in four very important games - three of them in relegation situations, one of them against a promotion rival - he was sent off and not one of the red cards was for a foul or a couple of fouls.

Joey Barton on 19:23 - Jan 20 by bosh67 | I seem to feel that the brevity of the piece may just have put what Joey said out of context. He was very good last year, as was Charlie and occasionally Matty. But apart from that we were piss poor. That had a lot to do with Harry as well. |

Don't think he was the worst player to wear the hoops....... Bob Malcolm anyone... Seriously though, I think he is very deluded regarding his career.......what did he have...a couple of good seasons as a youngster at Newcastle. Although he can occasionally put in a good shift... his ego seems to get in the way and screw up anything good he has done. I went of the lad after the sending off at man city..... Still Someone else's problem now isn't he
Joey Barton on 08:00 - Jan 21 with 1706 views | rbsranger | we can argue about how good or bad he was over his years at the club, but the fact is, his signing (and those of Anton Ferdinand and SWP) are the reason why we are in the crap we are in today. It was the beginning of the TF era. The previous season we had gone up and the squad we had didn't really look like coping. Bu then TF flashed the cash on these w**kers and we have not been the same club since. Looks like a combination of Lee Hoos, Sir Les and JFH are finally begin to redress those mistakes, but his signing really killed our soul

Joey Barton on 09:24 - Jan 21 with 1655 views | whittocksRs | Don't think you can blame Zamora for his fitness. He might have badly underperformed at times, but he often played through pain, only on the pitch after having injections. He at least tried (and so he should have as we made him a very rich man). Barton, overall, seemed to galvanise the other players when he was on the pitch, but there were so many negatives with him at the same time.
Joey Barton on 09:27 - Jan 21 with 1647 views | Maggsinho | What he seems to be missing is that there's a difference between being in a poor team and being part of a poor team - Barton was the latter.

Pardon my sentence structure. The "fact" I referred to was that it was a poor team. As you say, in my (insignificant) opinion he made more of an effort than most; but I never claimed that he was effective or a success.

This is spot on. It amazes me the forgiveness some have for Joey. On the one hand, I don't look down on him for studying at Roehampton, for reading philosophy etc and for trying to better himself. I find the attitude of some people towards that part of his life pretty repellant - it stinks of: 'you're scum, you're thick - get back in your box.' But at the same time I can't bear his arrogance - I like arrogance in a footballer when justified - for him it's not. I respect him for how he has really made something of his life from unpromising beginnings and I genuinely think he spends a lot of time trying to better himself, trying to find a way to curb his temper and rectify his shortcomings. Few people can be that self-aware. But then other times, like with these quotes, he seems to have no self-awareness at all and an inflated opinion of himself that is pretty shocking. He's a real enigma. But the absolute best thing we did was let him go. We had to. Yes, he may well have been better than Karl Henry or Sandrose this season, but that's not really the point. For Joey, it's always all about Joey. As for his 'sky-high' performances, well, last season I don't think he was even in our top 3 performers. Good riddance.
