How much exercise do you get a week? 18:30 - Sep 15 with 18931 viewsstuabd

I just had a check up and according to that bloody BMI index I need to lose some weight. I wouldn't say I was fat and I don't have a big gut, but according to my doctor I still need to lose some weight to get the BMI down.

I was just wondering how much exercise you guys get a week.
I'm 46
I play one hour of footy every Sunday
I then practise golf for 2 hours later in the week
I also get 18 holes a week in at the weekend

I hate gyms so the only alternative is to do more walking.

I feel like I could do more but with two kids and a ball-breaker of a wife :) its hard to get the time to do stuff.

I had a target at the beginning of the year to run 2020kms in 2020.

That’s just under 25 miles a week on average. In virtual terms I’m just on the outskirts of Venice and should arrive in Sofia in Bulgaria late in December. Because I live in a hilly area I’ve also run the equivalent elevation of Mount Everest twice so far.
I'm knackered most days

Sounds like you need to do more leg exercises to build your leg muscles. When I started at a gym three years back I had a real dodgy left knee and I was assured that if I did leg weights and exercises that it would improve. Worked a treat.

Three years later at the age of 54, five mornings a week I go for an interval run, 8 sets of 400 running paces at around 14/15kph and in between each set 8 lots of 200 walking paces at around 6/7kph. Takes around 30 minutes and I cover 5.5km. On the odd occasion I treat myself to running three times round one of the local lakes which is a total distance of 7.2km. Takes me around 34-35 minutes. With gyms now closed I treated myself to a home mini-gym plus some free weights. Still see my PT twice a week for core work. Haven't felt fitter in all my life. Oh and I'm down 5 stone on when I started. Don't drink alcohol (other than the 0.5% beers), and pretty much eat normally now and the weight is staying off.

Problem is unless a ball is involved, just running/jogging is incredibly dull and unpleasant.

Can't wait till the 5 a sides/8 a sides are up and running again. If recreational cricket is starting again this weekend, it can't be too far off? Can it??

I train pretty much every day of the week at the moment. Mixture of running, weights and HIIT sessions (all free on YouTube). Doubt I’ll go back to the gym now I’ve realised I can do it all without paying £60 per month.

I eat and drink quite a lot so the exercise is mostly to offset stuffing my face. But I also find it’s good for the mind as well as the body, particularly during times like the past few months which have been difficult for all of us.

I lost my appetite and was nauseated by some things I normally love, like tea, but I didn't stop eating completely. I got over it after about two weeks, but my sense of smell hasn't returned after nearly three months. Any long-term effects for you?

Until very recently, I had a tight chest and what I can only describe as a dusty cigarette smell in my nostrils. All other symptoms disappeared after a month and the most serious (fatigue / difficulty breathing / chest pain) lasted about ten days of which I was in bed for four of them.

A former colleague of mine had no sense of smell or taste for about three months and it has just returned.

Hope you return to full health soon.

Lockdown done me a big favour. I was really unfit beforehand, but started power walking on March 24th, and was only doing 5k for a couple of weeks. Walking up the hill near where I live left me breathing heavily for a while after. Then 2/3 days I was doing 7k. I was doing about 9mins-9mins 20 secs per kilometre. Then after a few more weeks, I upped it to 8k, and then 9k per day, and was walking quicker.
Now most days, I walk 9,10 and even 11k, and I’m now at 8 mins per kilometre. Done 7m 50secs a few times. Up until this Tuesday, I’d only missed about 10 days of power walking.
I feel so much better for it, and my gut has completely gone. Lost about a stone in weight too.

I’ve noticed a few other health benefits too. I’ve got a slight allergy to our cat, and have to use an inhaler a few times a week. Since I started the power walking, I’ve hardly used it.

You too Bazza. I have to admit, not being able to smell my own poo is a bit of a Superpower.

I try and get out for a jog at least two or three times a week but sometimes this falls by the way side.

To lose weight for me it’s all about what and how much I shove down my gob. Once I control that then it comes off and with a bit of exercise more comes off.

In 2011 I weighed myself and as I shoved down another Double Decker saw that I had beached there 17 stone mark. That set me off determined to rid myself of that mass. By the start of the Olympics in 2012 I had shed over 4 stone and down to 13 stone. I was so chuffed at that I decided to treat myself to some beer and chocolate. For the next seven years.

Weighing in June 2019 I was back up to 15 stone. As of today I’m 11st 12lbs. The last time I was below 12 stone was probably 25 years ago or more.

Now, I know what to do. The change in eating and exercise isn’t just to lose weight and put back on. It’s a change in lifestyle that I’ll stick to.

Drank like a bastard through all this though. I ain’t a nun.

Ride 3 times a week between 150 and 200km. Longer and slower at weekends and ideally a couple of quicker/shorter midweek jaunts.

I'm 54.

Want to lose another 8lbs as immediate target to move and feel better and improve on the bike as I enjoy it. I keep a loose check on hereditary high cholesterol and BP has been toppy for a while but currently in right zone.

I've worked hard on exercise during lockdown and though I'm fitter I've concluded what and how much we eat is a big part of the picture - perhaps 60% or more. I suspect that for many, the notional 2500 daily calorie requirement is too high. If I'm sitting at my desk all day and doing nothing other than a morning walk with the dog I may need nowhere near that amount.

If you don't like cycling or have time for endurance stuff, you get pretty good bang for buck doing some online hiit sessions involving compound movements of big muscle groups like squats and lunges. They can be short in duration and the energy burn continues afterwards. There are many to choose from. I tried a free app called 8fit and thought that was pretty good and was impressed by the warm up and cool down parts which had some really good movements of which some were familiar from Pilates. Those movements help unravel hip flexors and the like that shorten from sitting long term.

43. Bmi, either just or just not overweight, with a cm height making all the difference. Sedentary job. Belly too big.

Pre-Covid: 5-a-side once a week, squash once a week, and then something else in better weeks: gym, run around the scrubs. 60 minute walk return trip to qpr was a pleasure.

Since lockdown: trying to run every other day, normally a circuit of the scrubs. Never liked running but enjoying it more. Key is leaving the dog at home and a good podcast. Dan Carlin in particular, but some great qpr content this summer: ned/eze, Chris Ramsay, Warburton and Warnock interviews...

I mean to do yoga / Pilates but haven’t managed to get it into my routine yet. Really feel the benefit when I have done it. And I think I’d also benefit from being a bit stronger.

Makes little difference to my weight. Food more important. Lots of diabetes in my family. Pleased to have got my belly down from 101cm to 97. Further to go. I concentrate on having very little sugar and few simple carbs. Always liked plenty of salad vegetables legumes so that’s no problem. Only eating meat once a week or so, and make sure to get the best quality stuff, and to only eat it when I really want it, not just out of habit or lack of imagination. Would rather pay the same for 1 decent bit of meat than 3 or 4 pieces of mass produced crap. Try to avoid dairy too, although allow myself sheep’s cheese as it doesn’t seem it can be as industrial as cow.

I’m also experimenting with 18:6 fasting. Although it’s more like 17:7 at the moment. I first eat about 11 and finish eating by 6ish. It kind of fits my natural appetite and helps me not to
eat extra because I’m bored or greedy in the evening.

One thing to consider though: don’t be too fit and healthy, especially if you have dementia in your family. Terrible for everyone if your body lasts 20 years longer than your mind!

Blimey, don’t recognise the guy on page 3 of this thread. I guess middle-age is catching up with me.

Made a massive life-style choice over 2 years ago and was expecting a bi-product to be a loss of weight but the opposite occurred. Have put on circa 30% in body mass.

I started going to the gym for the first time in my life 18 months ago (so it’s obviously all muscle, cough.) When lockdown hit, I belatedly decided to go for the ‘Couch to 5k’ although I never been a runner.

Have just completed Week 7 which is 25-minute runs three times a week. Am just about managing it (slowly) but it does hurt. Weight appears to be coming off albeit only a couple of kilos.

Great stuff on here as usual, so not much to add other than my own situation. i am a right short-ass (5ft 3ish) 57 year old hovering around 71-72kg (11st 4). According to the BMI calculation I should weigh about 9 1/2 Stone, which i haven't done since I was about 14! Even when I was a youngster playing football 2-3 times a week, I was around 10 Stone.

I have an office job, so try to exercise a bit (pre-lockdown gym a couple of times a week) but being self employed not easy to find the time. Just under a year ago though I started to go to Man V Fat football. No one has mentioned it on this thread, so don't know if anyone else goes? Great if you want to lose weight and haven't played footie in a while. Plenty of support to help you lose weight; food tips and advice etc.

Since lockdown, ridiculous amounts (for me). 20 minute run almost every day, tennis once a week, 1.5 hour cycle ride a week, paddle boarding every day if not too windy/wet, walking the dog daily.

Trouble is i'm undoing any health benefit by stuffing myself in the evening and drinking too much vino and Estrella Galicia.

Can't believe everyone missed 18 holes a week and a ball breaker for a wife!

I'm 53 and always been active, very physical job and played sport till knackered my knees (snapped ACL) left at 34 and right 37. Put on about 1.5/2st after that but job kept me in reasonable shape although as became more office based I relied on the physical aspect of it from August to January keeping things in control.
Been more desk based for last 18mths but have been coaching football to kids and adults for 4 to 6 days a week for ages now, although not the same as playing it did help keep the weight off, but was on an SFA coaching course in January and snapped my achilles, disaster and still hobbling about. Put on a little weight but it was my shape that changed badly so started doing 75 press ups and 250 sit ups a day couple of months ago. Steady and nothing exciting but is making a difference, football training is back at last and doing 6 sessions a week do just moving about in general is making a difference too.

Surely best comment was Simon James accusing his MAMIL mates being obsessed when he's banging out 350 burpees a day! Quality😁

According to strava ( I know its not entiely accurate) I hit 36.6 mph at some point this week with Schwalbe marathon tyres on a hybrid 'citi' bike.

Appologies for breaking the speed limit but f'uck me. I'm quicker than I thought I was.

I'm nearly 59. I've got T3A cancer - it is cancer that spread to my prostate wall after having surgery for removing the prostate in December. When I got diagnosed last year I stepped up my training - I run 10k every other day and do loads of weights etc. Luckily I have a gym in my garden, I'm 11stone 3lbs, which is over my suggested weight for my height 5'11' but I'm comfortable with it. I feel great and no matter what anyone says, its major important to have the right diet when you are getting older. The cancer made me change my diet and I actually feel so much better for it.
As a side note to anyone in the 50 plus bracket - if you are getting up in the night to piss more than once, get yourself tested. I've always been pretty healthy so put it off. Don't do this - get fcking tested. It doesn't hurt and it gives peace of mind. Never under estimate the impact of having something like cancer has on your family and friends - you owe it to them but most of all you owe it to yourself to get tested..... And if you do have prostate cancer - it's not the end of the world. 90% of men live longer than 10/15 years, so don't hide. Get tested.

I get up at least 3 times a night, have blood in my urine when it’s tested (can’t visibly see it) anyhow my doc put me on a fast path cancer track, had to have a camera down the eye of my dick, the camera went past my prostate and into my bladder and they can’t find anything amiss.
Hope everything works out okay for you 100%.
