It's not necessarily a goalkeeping issue if the team are conceding a lot of goals - but a goalkeeper in poor form has a disproportionate effect on the team. In our case, Rob Green this season has been unreliable in whether he comes for crosses or not, whether he deals effectively with passes back or not and with his command in general of his area. This is bound to affect a defence because they just can't rely on what their goalkeeper is going to do.

I like Green and thought he saved us a few times last season. But this season he's been a liability on too many occasions and given that we won't extend his contract after the summer, it's got to make sense to give Smithies a chance if only to see if he can be a long term prospect. Frankly, I can't see that he's likely to be much worse because in addition to individual errors that have cost us points, he has also introduced uncertainty into the defence and that doesn't even take into account his poor distribution, which concedes possession more often than not. I don't want a witch hunt of Green, as I say he seems like a committed, nice guy but Smithies deserves his chance too.

Well put

That is clearly a lie. Rob Green hasn't got any friends.

Well put

looking at it from a point of view of going forward play offs don't look like an option.... green is not gonna improve to be a salable asset or be around in the next few years his contract is up in the summer... I'm not sure if smithies is going to be better but unless he is terrible it makes sense to pull the trigger and put him in now... that way we can evaluate him until the end of the season at the least and know what we have and if we need to reinvest there....

The sad fact is all players reach a point where they suddenly deteriorate very quickly. Green was appalling for pretty much all of 2015 and it's highly unlikely he'll improve. Many thanks for some good memories in amongst all the shit ones but he's simply not good enough to be keeping Smithies out.

He was diabolical in 2012 as well in fact his start was a major contributor to that relegation and some of the silly transfers. However he recovered and was great for us in 13/14 and 14/15

Overall Green has had some very good seasons but for some reason he really doesn't seem to be the same goalkeeper this season. Even more jittery, fixed to his line. Even worse handling and kicking. Always a good shot stopper but he must look at this season and think, hmm, I've not been at it.

Never knowingly right.

That picture looks like a scene from an, ahem, 'specialist interest' art film.

'You know, Ian - I can call you Ian, can't I? - it's getting rather warm in here, don't you think?'
'You're right Greeney. This polyester fleece is sooo restrictive...'
'Why don't I help you out...?'

(Wuckuh-chuckuh-wooooow-wah, etc. Door opens and the club secretary, Margot, bookish with hair tied up and wearing thick glasses, walks in. 'I was going offer you gentlemen some...refreshment...?')

Camera pans slowly left to show Armand Traore wiping his cock on the curtains.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

I would hope that Smithies would come in to the team now, but there's no reason to think that Green isn't a good professional.

For a start he was signed and then dumped into the back-up role with the immediate signing of Cesar, but got on with t without complaining. He's always been in great shape since signing for us and always acted professionally off the pitch. I can't remember him bitching to the press or anything like that.

I think he's well off form, but I don't get how there should be any personal dislike of the man.

He only got dumped into a "back end role" and cesar brought in because he threw a few into his own net in that first month. He had a calamitous start and cost us games and that whole season might have been quite different if we had gotten a win under our belt.

I have no dislike for him at all but I really struggle to understand how after 15-20 years in the game his kicking is still so bad.

That signing was the worst bit of man management and squad management I can remember in an era where, God knows, there were plenty examples. Green never once complained.

Green was an International goalkeeper who was signed on the 1st July. As we know, when you sign a keeper you are signing a player who is fighting for only one spot. In most cases there is no fight at all and there are clearly-defined roles: first-choice or backup. Green, still hoping to play his way back into the England team was surely signed as first-choice. If it wasn't explicit in the negotiations, it was surely implied.

He played three competitive games and Rangers signed a more high-profile goalie to replace him -"one of the top three goalies in the World" Rangers brayed - which he promptly did one game later as soon as his clearance came through. Green was immediately a back-up and his career was shelved. England? Forget it, Rob.

You would have to wonder how soon Rangers decided they were done with Green and started looking for a replacement. Maybe after two games, maybe after one, maybe even in pre-season. It was hideous.

It lacked loyalty, empathy and basic compassion - all essentials for any club or management in the handling of players/human beings. It immediately told the entire squad that there was no loyalty at QPR. Your career, your progression, your basic pride meant nothing to Rangers. There was no partnership here between club and player.

We constantly berate our players for being mercenaries. The definition is "primarily concerned with making money at the expense of ethics". If that didn't sum up QPR in their handling of Rob Green. nothing did.

I think it's mainly nerves. At Ipswich, one of their forwards stood at his side when he was trying to kick and when he complained the crowd gave him some stick (ex Norwich). I just knew he was then going to go all jittery and he proceeded to make a poor kick which we then struggled to defend.

I'm not sure but I think he was an excellent keeper with very few errors before that enormous clanger against the USA in the world cup. Since then he is error prone, lacking in confidence and jittery.

Would be interesting to know if his kicking was any better in his canary days.

Wow, that sounds way too harsh. Here are Green's first four games, after which he didn't play until late November. I will admit that I recall Green being at fault for at least 1, perhaps 2 goals in the first game (which I was at) but I'm not sure about the rest. The whole team was utter dreck in that Swansea game, mind. Anyone care to add anything on those other games? Look at the Walsall one, we won a cup game! Holy smoke!

Premier League Sa 18Aug 2012 QPR 0 - 5 Swansea
Premier League Sa 25Aug 2012 Norwich 1 - 1 QPR
Capital One Cup Tu 28Aug 2012 QPR 3 - 0 Walsall
Premier League Sa 01Sep 2012 Man City 3 - 1 QPR

Brian McCarthy has made more or less all the points I was going to make. QPR - well, mainly Hughesless - treated Green appallingly. OK, Green was still getting paid but he has always been someone who wants to play, not just domestically but for his country. He's not a "take the money and hide in the reserves" type. He has not been on top form this season, I'll admit that, but he has been a model professional based on all the evidence I can see.

RFA

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."
