Opportunity missed. You can't help thining that if we could have found a buyer for Green that McCarthy would have got the opportunity and been a success. Annoying that he had another year and that we're paying him so much.
Hopefully we use the same foresight with our new targets, whoever it is at least they know they only have 1 more year to wait before getting their chance. |  |

I reckon he will go on and have a good career in the premier league. As others have said Joe Lumley looks really good to me and could do a good job backing up Green, and with 3.5m we can give that defense some much needed attention. On another note Bamford has just signed on loan to Palace.....they could have a very good team this year. |  |

I have a feeling we don't know the whole picture on this lad.
If there is a release clause at more than we paid for him I can't see that as being 'another bad mistake' particularly. I would question someone saying they don't like being a number two when they are going to a club to do exactly that. Speroni just signed a new deal I believe. |

It was down to him to dislodge Green. The couple of times I saw him last season he was woeful. Not saying he's a bad keeper, just saying that Green was brilliant and McCarthy didn't take his chances. Green could have gone elsewhere for a bench warming payday and wanted to stay here. I see that as a positive. |  | | |

Possibly, if he ever does, it won't be whilst playing for QPR.
I think the difference here is that whilst I think Green has played very well for us generally, I don't rate him that highly in a lot of ways. I think he's an excellent shot stopper, but I also think he's mentally fragile, terrible at distribution and makes poor decisions about when to stay or leave his line. He constantly seems to put more pressure on his defence by not taking ownership and I am never confident when it comes to having to rely on him for anything.
Now I know that McCarthy has not exactly covered himself in glory with his last competitive appearance, but he's got 10 years on Green, and has already shown glimpses of being a really good keeper. I fully expect, once he has a chance to be out and out 1st choice, for him to become a brilliant all round keeper in the modern mould. I really wanted him to stay and for Green to go, but now it won't be that way - so let's wait and see.
If we're looking for alternatives, we can do worse than Alex Smithies at Huddersfield, good age and bags of experience at this level. Probably won't move for a number 2 spot but he's an example of a good alternative [Post edited 21 Jul 2015 19:28]

Green should have been our Player of the Year last season for the amount of saves he made that kept the scores respectable alone. There's no reason that he shouldn't keep going until he is 38-40 years old without any drop in form or ability. McCarthy had 3 opportunities to show us what he was made of and was Conference standard at best. He was obviously training every week so the club could see what he was like and have chosen to keep Green as it offers the best option in the goalkeeping department. |  |

Green is 35, Speroni 36. Both of them are healthy well-established keepers approaching the end of their career. For McCarthy it's a saw-off, he'll only get the odd game in either case. However he maintains his EPL status/salary at Palace. At 26 he'd be going backwards with us. We need to be looking for someone younger, 20—23, and be prepared to use him occasionally, and not just in League Cup games against lower league opposition. | | | |

Don't understand the Anti Green comments on here He made some unbelieveable saves last season and often saved us from some even more embarrassing results. Clive gave him a B mark in the season review and he goes to a lot more games than me Other than Charlie no one else deserved a B
Mcarthy played in a couple of games and wasn't that good Although I admit he was excellent for Reading. Yet based on those displays, a lot seem to think he deserved to be the new No 1

I think this one was always going to happen. I'm sure I read somewhere pretty much as soon as the season ended about Mcarthy going to Palace.
Something about their goalkeeper coach being ex Reading academy and Mcarthy having a real close bond / mentor type relationship with him.
I'm fine with Green but overall think this is a shame. It's difficult to forget just how well he played for Reading against us on more than one occasion. He's got a real bright future in my opinion. |  | | |

Just going on their wikipedia pages, Green had a much more successful career by the time he was McCarthy's age. 1st team football at 21 helping Norwich to promotion and getting his first England cap at 25.
McCarthy just seems to go from club to club and not cementing his place.

Not sure thats a standard career for a young keeper but he still seems unsettled for whatever reason.
He's still young and will no doubt find a club that suits him and hopefully go on to have a successful career. Unfortunately it wont be here. I would prefer him to stay and keep Green on his toes if he's happy to sit on the bench but McCarthy probably doesn't want the drop in wages.

Hi,
Green is a quality keeper but he will be gone at the end of the season. As he is on £50k per week, unless we put a relegation clause in. We shall not renew and that will be the end of it.
We should have made McCarthy number 1 for this season and loaned Green out. Green does get injured so, now who takes his place?
No this was a mistake and he has been sold to a Prem club. They know he is decent. I bet Palace play him way more than we did and he does aright there and becomes the number 1.
