Jonathan de Guzman
Italian club Napoli are closing in on a deal for former Swansea loanee Jonathan de Guzman, the Express reports. The fee for the Villarreal midfielder is said to be £5.2m.
The move means that Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is likely to remain at Old Trafford. The Belgian had been linked with a move away, but with main suitors Napoli having turned their sights on de Guzman, it looks as though the midfielder is unlikely to depart.

The real slackjack .... beware of imposters! They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ......... Enough said!

£5 million fee and £1.2 Million a year under a 5 year contract. Doesn't sound like the personal terms are beyond our means. Big mistake to let someone of his quality and PL experience slip through our fingers. The stated reason is that we contacted him through his agent and the response was that he was waiting to see what other options were available to him. Can't see what the issue is with that?

Money is reportedly tight and we're in need of a defensive midfielder more than a player like de Guzman.

Gylfi will better de Guzman's goals and assists (he's already got one of each by the way) so hopefully his fanclub will wind it in.

And where is the experienced/proven cover in midfield when we have the inevitable spate of injuries and suspensions?

I was wondering about this. Gylfi or JdG to start? Yes, Gylfi definitely. And if he's injured, who? Say he'd got a knock in training on Friday and wasn't fit to play at OT, who would have played that role and what impact would that have had on the game/result? You can't go into a season with one extremely important player in a key position and no backup whatsoever. JdG could have been a very important member of the squad (again) and I'm disappointed we didn't make more effort to get him. Wrap Gylfi in cotton wool.

We need a defensive midfielder and a RB, assuming that Fernandez is a done deal. We have plenty of attacking mid's, and a better one in Gylfi.

Bigger priorities elsewhere. We can hardly afford quality, experienced backup at every position.

£5m fee and good wages are a lot to spend, even though I'd have liked to see him back.

3 central midfielders will be in the usual 5 man midfield. As such 6 squad members of sufficient quality and experience are required. At present we have Leon, Ki, Shelvey and Gylfi. JDG would have given us 5 leaving one to sign. Now we're chasing Cork and Stambouli. Where's the logic in that when their fees and wages will at best equal those of De Guzman?

Nonsense to suggest we can get away with 4 CMs and a couple of kids.

In what respect? I stand by what I said, sorry he's not coming back, garry obviously prefers ki, and it's his judgement that counts

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

Monk plays Emnes in attacking midfield too, and both he and Laudrup have played Routs there in the three winger system (for the WBA game Pablo stayed wide left most of that first half).

I'm a de Guz admirer, but it's clear that Gylfi, Ki or JJS will be attacking midfield unless two are injured, in which case one of the other options will be deployed. The decision has clearly been taken unless we're going to shell out massive bucks for a bencher. A different type of midfielder is clearly the priority. Tbh, I'm amazed that anyone has a different view, but fair enough.

Maybe because Cork or Strombouli (we won't sign both) play a different position to JDG? A position in which we have an ageing Britton and a young player in Fulton.

For those 3 positions we have: Leon, Gylfi, Ki, Shelvey, new DM. Fulton and Emnes also add depth.

Last season ML was happy to go with: Leon, Shelvey, JDG, Canas, Pozuelo. He let Ki go, played Michu up front and Pablo as a winger, so they don't count.

Seeing as Pozuelo and Canas were inexperienced and we didn't know if they had quality, doesn't seem that different to me and we had European games on top.

You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.
