LFW Travel Guides - Liverpool, Anfield

QPR’s sorry 2012/13 campaign concludes with a visit to Liverpool in May. If you’re daft enough, here’s the usual travel tips.

Ground Name: Anfield

Capacity: 45,362

Address: Anfield Road, Liverpool, L4 0TH

Telephone: 0151 260 1433

Ticket Office: 0151 260 8680

By Car

It’s about 210 miles up the M1 and M6 for QPR fans travelling from London to this one, a journey time of just shy of four hours at the speed limit. Once you’ve done the long slog up the M1 and M6 join the M62 at junction 21a towards Liverpool and follow it to its conclusion. Then join the A5058 towards Liverpool and then after three miles turn left at the lights next to the McDonalds into Utting Avenue. Travel down Utting for one mile and then go right at the Arkles pub for the ground.

Parking

Street parking should be available around the ground for those arriving before 1pm, although expect the local scallies to request a ‘mind ya car Mr’ fee. Failing that the other side of Stanley Park around Goodison Park is probably the best bet – either on the streets or in the Everton car park which charges a tenner. The guide also recommends the dockers club 15 minutes away, off the A580, which is where Waterloo Dock play their home matches – you can park there for a fiver.

Train

Direct trains are run from Euston to Liverpool by Virgin, but as the sheer weight of ‘home’ fans travelling to Anfield from London tends to jack the price up you may wish to consider one of several other options – changing at Chester onto a Mersey Rail service into the city, changing at Manchester onto a TransPennine service or changing at Crewe or Birmingham onto a London Midland service. As we stand the various options stack up like this…

- Direct trains leaving Euston at 15 minutes past with a journey time of two hours 55 minutes give or take. Three direct trains back after the match at 18.48, 1948 and 20.48. The only tickets available on these now are £77.30 return.

- Trains to Crewe: The 0845 Virgin service arriving Crewe 11.00 is currently available at £26. A much slower London Midland service (leaving 0954 arriving 1301) is currently available for £8. Coming back the cheapest fast train is at 1929, arriving 2108, and is £51. The slow London Midland service at 1937 and arriving at 23.14 is £8 meaning it is possible to go there and back for £16 if you don’t mind a long trip. A return from Crewe to Liverpool is £10.

- Trains to Chester: Sadly also down to just the £77.30 returns.

- Trains to Manchester Piccadilly: try the 0820 from Euston and the 2055 back (arrives 2349) for a £52 return. Advance purchase tickets from there to Liverpool retail at £8. It’s £11.20 if you pay on the day.

Coach

The official club coach leaves Loftus Road at 9am and picks up at the Target Roundabout at 9.30am. It is priced £32 adults, £21 seniors and young adults, and £19 under 16s. The usual discount applies to season ticket holders. No news of an LSA coach as yet.

Tickets

Rangers have 1,100 tickets left in the Anfield Road End priced £44 adults, £33 seniors and £15 under 16s. There are five wheelchair and ambulant disabled tickets priced £33 adults, £25 seniors and £11.50 under 16s with a carer seat free. These are currently on sale to supporters with 100 loyalty points. Those with 30 can buy from tomorrow and then it’s general sale from next Tuesday.

Pubs

Most Rangers fans arriving by train will no doubt hang around in the city centre. Nearer the ground The Arkles pub mentioned in the directions is traditionally the away fans’ haunt but that can be crowded with queues to get in after 1pm. Try the Flat Iron if so, a mixed but friendly pub a five minute walk away.
