Dunne off?
at 14:47 2 Feb 2025

£2m+ for someone who has less than 6 months less on their contract just seems pricey to me, and I'm a little surprised that if we've been offered £2m in those circumstances, we haven't taken it. Guess I'm looking at the £2.5m we took for Sincs who is much younger, a goalscorer and had a year left.

Just feel there's something here that we aren't party to.

Dunne off?

I think I disagree with that. I'd say if you're comparing Postecoglu's credentials with either of them, they'd probably have a bigger shout for the Spurs job for example. Depends on what you consider next level I suppose. Everton? West Ham? Villa? Maybe even Newcastle?

I don't think it's a coincidence that by and large it's clubs "down South" that have broken through in the Prem, Bournemouth and Brighton with Brentford and Fulham. If the money's good for players, wouldn't they prefer to play down South than go to the likes of Burnley or SheffU.

Maybe I'm just looking at this through slightly rose tinted specs, but you know you had Bielsa at Leeds and he couldn't move them to the level of the four southern clubs I mention above.

I've wondered about this. Obviously, we are not currently at the level of Fulham or Brentford. But neither Frank nor Silva seem to have been desperate to move on to a "bigger club".

Are they not being approached for some reason? Or is being manager at a London club more of an allure than we might imagine? Or am I missing something else?

Wednesday played in Leeds (Yorkshire) last weekend, then at home midweek.

We travelled from London to Plymouth, to London, to Hull then back to London in the same period. Think it's a bit disingenuous to describe that as the same schedule.

Marti's remarks on the ref
at 20:23 25 Jan 2025

Dreadful performance from the ref. Wednesday clearly knew about Dunne's threat from throw ins and set pieces, and he was held around the waist at every set piece from minute one. If you're booking Smyth for his challenge out on the wing, you have GOT to be booking their fella for taking Smyth out on the edge of the area. It's a yellow card all day every day.

As I said elsewhere, if one of our players moved, he was held, wrestled or taken down all bloody afternoon, most of the time without a free kick being awarded, let alone a card being shown.

I don't think he was biased, just inept. Bloke looked out of his depth to me.

I felt we kept them pretty quiet for the first 40 minutes, created a few chances and were generally the better team. Quite simply we ran out of steam thereafter , and they deserved the win in the second half. No matter how sniffy some people choose to be about professional footballers being too tired to play, its a fact that we will have spent the large part of this week on the road from one end of the country to the other, and the opposition haven't, so that worked to their advantage ultimately.

I'd also add that when both sets of fans are telling the ref he doesn't know what he's doing. it's probably a fair indication that he is crap. But his ineptitude generally suited the opposition more than us. If it moved, they held it, wrestled it or kicked it without fear of consequence. Worst we've had at HQ this season I think.

I'd like to think that the unwavering support that fans have given Marti, particularly in that home game against Stoke, won't be lost on him. I'd like to think he will commit to this season and next at least.

Make no mistake, 6 points in three days from a fixture schedule like that is absolutely outstanding. Well done everyone!

If a miracle happened and we went up via the playoffs
at 21:06 20 Jan 2025

I feel that the likes of Brighton and Brentford. when they got promoted. went up with teams who had the athletic attributes to compete in the Prem. It took them more than a transfer window or two to put together those squads. I don't think we have any more than three or four who might have those attributes right now.

If we have a chance to go up, we have to take it I think, but I'd be more confident that with Marti still at the helm for the next two years, we'd have enough of a squad to hold our own for a year or two should we go up then.

Also told that whilst that isn't impossible, Wycombe's fans are not quite so keen having had a few years of more attractive football than GA's team provided.

That would be my three too. Surprised more haven't mentioned Pompey, Oxford looked out of their depth at ours, but Portsmouth were pretty poor too. Cardiff would be the other ones in the mix, but I think they are probably just better than the other three.

QPR v Naaaarwich Match Thread

Very very fortunate that the elbow on Morgan wasn't spotted by any of the officials. Deliberate and an obvious red. Thought Norwich were more interested in moaning and putting in a lot of snidey little challenges than trying to play football, and they got everything they deserved.

FWIW, I've always felt this team will finish the season much more strongly than it started. Lots of filling gaps in the squad with foreign imports that would probably take time to settle. Hopefully next season will be more about adding quality in a few positions. I'm not sure we won't end up comfortably closer to the play offs than the drop zone.

Got to say, exactly what I saw and how I reacted. Really did think it had to have gone through a hole in the net, I swear it nestled in the side net. Just a moment from the twilight zone.

Celar - Nothing Again
at 13:02 3 Nov 2024

Think Celar will benefit from us playing the 433 formation we did yesterday. He isn't equipped to play the same lone striker role that Frey can.

But he has just got to be more aggressive with everything he does imo. A ball curled into the box after 5 minutes by Madsen, and he is ambling in after it rather than busting his bolx to get on the end of it. A ball played in near post in the second half and he's got to be doing everything he can to get in front of the defender, but hardly a flicker of interest. God knows how many times a ball played to a Sunderland CB on the deck where it was begging for him to get in and make a challenge and at the very least put his mark on the oppo.

Never known a striker who was any good that was "nice".

Yeah, I thought 4-3-3 actually worked much better for us than what we've seen the rest of the season. Crucially, it suited the new guys much better. Varane, Madsen, Morgan, Celar all looked much more comfortable. And despite us missing so many, what that line up gave us was a slightly greater physical presence. Quite encouraged by yesterday, and if Sunderland are a top six side, there really isn't that much to fear.

Can this team play Marti ball?
at 11:38 22 Sep 2024

Think this is spot on. In a world where everyone expects everything now, it's worth reminding ourselves that sometimes you have to work for a long time to achieve what you want to achieve.

I am reminded of watching Liverpool 20 years or so back trying to transition into a passing team, and how uncomfortable and alien one and two touch football looked to them. But it needed to be done, because that's how the game was going. We need to do what we are doing because that's where the game is going.

The spine is there, the rest is not working
at 18:46 21 Sep 2024

The points about being static and too cautious are key. While the back four are trying to play out, look beyond them and our lot are often just stood watching. It's no wonder the back four look cautious. The midfielders have simply got to move the opposition around and look to create space for others. That's not just a problem today but for a number of seasons imo.

On the plus side, I thought our goal was absolutely the best thing about the game today, quality from Dembele, Saito and Frey, the sort of goal I can't remember us scoring for a very long time. Frey's movement and finish were just top drawer.

Like a few others on here, I feel this season will all be about how we finsih, not how we start.
