I was curious and googled and found the attached link. Not sure if it is true but supports some of the comments on here.

Three is the cursed number as QPR fall in a hole at Hull - Report
at 15:09 15 Apr 2024

Perhaps the reason that Frey got a 5 at the Birmingham game and Dykes a 2 yesterday is that 2 different people were awarding scores. In the Birmingham game the marks spread between a 5 and an 8 with Frey with a 5 the joint lowest. Yesterday the scores ranged from 2 to 5 with Dykes the lowest on 2. So both were the lowest scores awarded for that game
This is correct for me as all three of our forwards are not producing much. The finishing from all our front players has been woeful for the last six games.

It also has implications on the financial commitment of our owners if that is their plan. As I understand it there is less restriction in L1 from P&S rules. So if we are cutting out cloth accordingly for L1 it is less to do with P&S rules and more to do with their financial commitment to the club.
Is that the case Lassel?

That is some chart from QPR analytics. I saw nearly all the home games in that period and obviously knew how much worse the results and performances had become. But it is really stark seeing it represented like that.

Yes also don’t see a lack of effort across the team. In some yes and at times in the game definitely. It is the mental application and desire for me rather than the physical. As evidenced at the end of games when we are messing about rather than putting the ball in the opponent penalty area.

I suppose the reason that I would not have taken the job would be that there were other clubs where I was more likely to succeed in the championship. Maybe those clubs weren’t interested in him. But if I had a chance at Bristol City or QPR and wasn’t a QPR fan I know which I would choose. Actually would probably still choose Bristol City.
But I am glad he is here.

Yes that is certainly possible and I have taken jobs where I think I can sort out issues that others could not.
I suppose though that I am clinging to some hope that he knows something that will save us, a few million found down the back of boardroom sofa or something like that.

The thing that baffles me is why did Cifuentes take the job. He has (until QPR have finished with him) a decent reputation and I would have thought would have been a potential candidate for Sunderland, Bristol City or Millwall. What did he see in us? Same goes for Cannon, especially as he signed under Ainsworth.
Cifuentes seems knowledgeable and football I would assume is a small world. We have been in decline for 2 or 3 years with little youth development, poor loans and diminishing returns from our recruitment. What did he see in us. To badly paraphrase Mrs Merton - Marti what first attracted you to the bankrupt, lazy and talentless QPR?

Modern PR is very powerful. I remember when Arteta first left Man City to go to Arsenal he was hailed as having a key role in the tactics and play at Man City, When Arsenal struggled at first he became the guy who put the cones out at Man City.
It seems like we have to decide if someone is good before they actually have proved themselves, rather than let them develop and deliver. Although if you are likely to be sacked every nine months then i can see why you would spend time promoting yourself.

I also think that collectively we can be too quick to write players off generally. Both as a club and a fan base. So when the team is not playing well it is because the players cannot be good enough rather than we need to find a way of them performing better.
Last year Dickie was league 1 at best but is fitting into a mid table Championship side, Bidwell was not good enough but played for Swansea and Coventry in the play offs and Luongo was never a championship player but now apparently is.
I really hope that we have a couple of years of player development with a few additions rather than the wholesale changes.

A great article, thank you. I read a lot but do not post very often. I hesitate to ask this as I don’t want to be seen as opening up the painful FFP headroom debate again. But if I have understood correctly there is no head room this season but some next season, although we have used up some of next seasons headroom with the 2 years deals for Cook, Fox and Colback. My question is what is the punishment if we breach in January, by making some signings that are within the headroom for next season? Is the slate wiped clean in August or do the penalties run into next season? As I said not trying to question your previous analysis.

Thanks they are great write ups, even though it is painful to read.
I am probably mad but it has given me a small amount of optimism for next year. I understand the financial position and the challenge Gareth faces but perhaps a less talented group of people that actually turn up and try may make us more competitive.

But we keep retaining players that don’t get anywhere near our first team. So the track record is not good. If we are in serious discussions with Martin then next year our 4 forwards will be Dykes, good for another 8 goals, Martin perhaps 4 off the bench, Armstrong not many and Kelman even less.
I am usually optimistic but Armstrong and Kelman are going to have to improve massively to make a difference next year. But with those 4 on the books how can our limited budget support more strikers?
It would make more sense to me to let as many out of contract players leave as we can and have more options to make changes.
We have really limited funds and are tying money up on players that just don’t seem to be anywhere near first team standard.

Jordan (Non-QPR)

Hi Aston,
I went there about 10 years ago, so not thee most up to date, but had a really great holiday. Amman is the capital and a good place to spend a day or two and has some great restaurants. I will try to remember them and post an update later.

Other places to see are:
Jerash - North of Amman with great Roman ruins
Petra as you mentioned - a long day and the site spreads over miles and there is lots to see and amazing views. It is much more than the Treasury building that is in Indiana Jones.
Wadi Rum - the desert with amazing rock formations and you can camp overnight. An amazing experience. If you cant camp overnight a 4x4 tour will let you see the sights in daylight.
Aqaba - Red Sea resort was ok but been to better seaside resorts round the world so if pushed for time i would miss this out.
Dead Sea - again a bit of tourist thing but difficult not to take the chance to have a picture of you floating and reading the paper.
Near the Dead Sea - numerous castles from the time of the crusades and Mount Nebo. I think that this where Moses saw the promised land. I am not religious myself but had to go and see the site.

All in all it was a great holiday and the people were really friendly.

QPR Finances released
at 16:59 28 Feb 2023

Understandably the conversation is around FFP and your conclusion about a fire sale is probably correct. The motivations of our owners to continue funding us are beyond me though. Even if we manage to reduce our losses within FFP this would still involve writing a cheque for £1m per month. The chances of any future stadium and property redevelopment recovering what they have lost must be slim. And there is no viable option for a new stadium site so the time frame must be about 10 years best case to occupation of a new stadium and LR redevelopment. That would be another £120m of funding best case. I wonder if this summer will not just be a review of our strategy and who keeps their job but also the owners strategy around their plans.

I thought that they were great questions and the answers were as straightforward as they could be. I would not expect him to be any more open on the Warburton situation in public.
I did not take away confidence that we have a plan though, it was more a case of things are difficult and we will muddle through in areas such as contract renewal, youth team player development, transfer choices and cat b status. Perhaps there is clear strategy in the background but I did not feel that from the answers.
Overall I am not sure if it is a poor strategy or a poor execution of the strategy that has led to some of our current issues.
