Queen Elizabeth II on 22:12 - Sep 8 by 49thseason

The EFL has announced Friday's fixtures - Burnley vs Norwich and Tranmere vs Stockport - have been postponed as a mark of respect for Queen Elizabeth II. A decision on the weekend's games will be made on Friday morning, following discussion with the Department for Culture, Media & Sport.

The EFL paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, highlighting that she presented captain Bobby Moore with the World Cup trophy when England beat Germany at Wembley in 1966

Yeah

But just to add, the Department for Culture, Media & Sport have specified that all theatre performances should go ahead as planned

Oh dear thats twice in one thread.

The country is officially in 12 days of mourning for its Head of State. Things will get postponed. Personally I would like Saturdays game to go ahead for selfish reasons, but I will respect the decisions made. Our game on the 20th will surely be postponed as that is the expected day of the funeral

Grinding the country to a halt isn’t a mark of respect. Let people get out there, celebrate her life, or more likely celebrate our way of life that she has overseen during her reign. On the day funeral, the focus and thoughts of the nation will naturally be on the Queen.

Forcing mourning on people would be a terrible idea, it would create resentment rather than any positive feeling of remembrance.

I think Briels that it's more a case of the authorities carefully focussing their available resources and those then not being available across the UK because of various arrangements for the death of the monarch.

In a striking assessment of the scenes that could unfold, one memo warns of a worst-case scenario in which London literally becomes “full” for the first time ever as potentially hundreds of thousands of people try to make their way there – with accommodation, roads, public transport, food, policing, healthcare and basic services stretched to breaking point. Concerns have also been raised about a shortage of stewards for crowd control purposes.

The prime minister and the queen have agreed that the day of the state funeral will be a “Day of National Mourning.” This has also led to planning issues. The day will effectively be a bank holiday, although it will not be named as such. If the funeral falls on the weekend or an existing bank holiday, an extra bank holiday will not be granted. If the funeral falls on a weekday, the government does not plan to order employers to give employees the day off – the documents say that is a matter between employees and their staff.

No one actually knows though as we've never seen this in our lifetimes.

The EFL have an issue on the competition's integrity in that do they let Rochdale vs Salford go ahead, but postpone AFC Wimbledon vs Leyton Orient.

There's a 10 day process now and we have Salford (h), Leyton Orient (h), Northampton (a) and Liverpool U21s (h) in that time.

D-Day+10, the likely date of the funeral on the planning, is Tuesday 20th September 2022.

The Great North Run is on Sunday I think. Tens of thousands have travelled. Some from abroad. Not sure what they'll do about that

I actually don't disagree with your thinking. But your tone in this thread wasn't very respectful given the news yesterday.

The 7 day mourning period is for family and Royal household staff.

We are all respectful and Sad but lets crack on .... regarding sporting events this is what the late queen would have wanted. Racing / football / cricket etc...

The funeral day will be the chance to reflect and celebrate her life at the same time. There is no need for the Anchor to be thrown out between now and the funeral day. IMO.

Reading between the lines, she's had an on-going illness (presumably incurable) and looking at how frail she looks and the engagements she hasn't been able to fulfil, she's been deteriorating for some time. She's had a bloody awful time of it after losing the Duke and battling what appears to be a life-threatening illness (much like my own mum had to endure). Not to mention having Covid chucked at her. Regardless of your views on royalty, she's a remarkable and special woman, epitomised by that smile on what will probably the last photo of her, and my heart goes out to her and her family. Very sad.

Anglican funerals can't be held on a Sunday, and since the monarch is head of that church it'd have to be following that, possibly Monday 19th with a "day of national mourning" granted

Rugby League had previously developed a contingency plan for the world cup final set for third Saturday in November at OT. They (not me!) indicated that the funeral of the monarch has to be on a saturday so had plan to move final to sunday in the event that she passed during the tournament.

If they are correct then the funeral will be either saturday week of the following saturday.

I expect coronation will also be on a saturday

I'm one of the organisers of the parkrun on York racecourse and we've just had the go ahead from HQ for tomorrow. We'll no doubt have a few people turning up just to express their disapproval. A couple of running pals this morning have experienced drivers stop and give them grief for exercising instead of staying at home and feeling sorry for themselves.

It's a bit like what happened during lockdown 1, some people feeling they have a right to determine how everyone else should process change. Personally I thought the Queen was a belter and I wish she could have lived forever but equally I'd rather regular events continue to take place in a sensitive manner and those who wish to stay away for a while can do so.

Funeral confirmed as a week on Monday, the 19th

Bank holiday too. Always seemed the most likely date, allowing people to pay their respects on the day then get back to work, or whatever
