Watford robbed yesterday and man yoo's goal should not have stood today. So something that was designed to eradicate controversy is actually creating it.
Seemlingly a huge proportion of goals being referred to VAR. Referees don't have to referee any more. Fans can't properly celebrate in the moment of joy when the ball hits the net because the immediate reaction is to see if it gets referred to VAR. It's also an irritating name.
I suppose it'll rear its ugly head in the Championship soon. It will take its place along with game management and hopeless refs to ruin our simple pleasures.

How is the disallowed Burnley goal at Leicester a foul, but the Liverpool one and the Watford penalty aren't? Personally not sure I'd have given any of them but you can't say a very slight clip on the ankle of a player who isn't reaching the ball is a foul on Saturday but not on Sunday.

Watched Man U v Liverpool yesterday and I got bored fairly quickly by the VAR-ness of it all.
Anything that makes Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher the headline act and not the actual players is a bad, bad thing.
agree totally... I really, really, really hate the Premier League now and especially the 'dream team' of Tyler, Neville and Carragher. (Liverpools late equaliser meant Carragher probably didnt feel the need to spit on ManUre fans this season I suppose). I hate the long drawn out over analysis of games, the constant drone of Nevilles voice, Tyler with his (probably got some sort of copyright) "and its LIVE" moniker. Yesterdays game was the first Prem game I have watched this season (nothing better on TV) and couldnt agree more about VAR. It is bloody terrible and totally unworkable in its current format. The slightest brushing of the ball on someones hand means goal dis-allowed, the slightest contact means a foul, goal celebrations are cut short as the ref is asked to wait for the VAR review... It simply aint football anymore!

Agree. All they have done is switch from a contentious refereeing decision to a contentious VAR decision and slowed the game down. In the Man U V Liverpool game there were (technically) illegal actions for both goals but one was allowed and one wasn't. A lot of VAR is opinion based technology whereas goal line technology is fact based. Get rid. I haven't spoken to a single supporter who likes it.

I read somewhere that pre-VAR, referees got about 98.5% of decisions right so millions of pounds is being wasted ruining the game in the process to try to make it 1.5% better.

Absolutely. I said it would ruin the game and that’s exactly what it’s doing. It sort of works in a stop/start game like cricket but never in football. I don’t care about it in the PL because I never watch that but I really hope we never have it. It’s been ruining the rugby WC as well.

This is exactly it isn't it? They said it would eliminate doubt. It doesn't. We have the same amount of controversy, if not more, and it takes longer and it ruins the immediacy of the game. It is absolutely awful and will never work, but there's sadly no chance they'll go back now. One thing Blatter had right was to resist it. Goalline tech is completely different, but everything else is a nonsense. Oh is my big toe offside? Is my knee a quarter of an inch further forward than the defender's knee? who the fk cares? If it's given, it's given, if it's not it's not. Live with it - this ludicrous delaying of decisions is a killer. Hate it.

I heard a lady reporter say on Sunday Supplement that when she attended a VAR briefing pre season the stated aims were:-
1) Eliminate wromg decisions
2) To uphold the match referee's authority.
These are a contradition if the referee is mistaken, but explains why hardly any decisions are overturned.
VAR is only bring used correctly to determine offside & handballs where goals are scored. Even then goals may be wrongly ruled out for offside as the referee blew his whistle before the ball entered the net (Villa earlier this season), due to our officials treating offside differently to the rest of the world.
It was not the fault of VAR that the Liverpool goal was disallowed correctly. That was down to the change of law this season that states you can't score a goal if the ball has touched the hand/arm of an attacker, even if accidental. Yes, I know those aren't the actual wording!
My problem with this law is that defenders can stop a goal by accidental handball, thus gaining an advantage!

because as I have said before VAR isn't some mythical all seeing being - its just another referee who will have a subjective opinion like his colleague out on the pitch.
We will agree with some, not with others. VAR doesn't change that so not worth the delay, aggravation in my mind.
Only genuine corrections have been offsides that are often millimetres - again is all the hassle/time delay/discussion worth it just to correct the odd wrong decision and that's all it is.
As for the protocol and the Man Utd/Liverpool incident - despite my dislike of VAR - nothing wrong with that decision -some thought it a foul, some not - so evidently its NOT a clear and obvious error!
Can't agree about the Watford 'pen' though - he fouled him 3 times! There again the fact that you thought it wasn't a pen makes it not a clear and obvious error I guess!

I think its ironic Liverpool moaning about decisions by referees when you think of all the poor decisions we've had against them. There was an article by Dave Thomas in AKUTRs about 25 years ago where he stated Liverpool had been given 16 penalties against us in 20 games played at Anfield. I remember them getting two in a night game up there one season, they missed one of them. I think it was the night Les got sent off as well. The worse decision ever in the history of poor refereeing decisions must be the League Cup semi final. Ian Dawes touches the ball on his thigh about a yard outside the box and the ref gave a pen.
Go to 3:55. Ian St John "if it did hit his arm, it was outside the box". When Barron saved the penalty Brian Moore reckons 'justice was done'.

I would prefer we didn't have VAR, players stopping trying to cheat and everyone cut officals more slack, but that's not going to happen in a hurry. In its defence, while VAR is not going to make decisions 100% accurate and controversy will remain part of the game, surely it will increase accuracy a bit - why wouldn't it? One thought I had though is that while it is mostly just the big decisions that get reviewed, as obviously reviewing everything would be a nightmare, yet actually a throw in given the wrong way, for example, in some sense effects everything else which happens afterwards.
