Terrible news, 800 jobs gone, but thousands more will be hit. Hopefully the new regeneration program will be able to do something to offset the job losses. I am stunned to hear this.

This is Virgin media in Llansamlet, not Virgin Atlantic near the train station. Dreadful news for all involved.

Mt Daughter works there and she has said they are moving the operation to Manilla, probably to avoid paying taxes, yet many blame the EU and immigration for the problems of this country.

Indeed. Seems we can't even compete for call centre jobs in this area. A declining Public Sector and our University are the only big employers around.

A lot of the Virgin Media and Virgin Mobile customer services are already set up right across the Philippines

Sad to see Llansamlet closing down, a lot of people were made redundant or relocated from there to England about years 5/6 years ago.

It's been in the pipeline since Liberty Global bought Virgin Media in 2013.

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

So true and without the public sector i.e. DVLA, hospitals, dwindling local authority jobs and what's left of the civil service etc, I dread to think what a state this part of the world would be in.

I have never been so pessimistic/worried about the SW Wales/Swansea economy and thats after seeing the decades of continuum/decline and accompanying relentless bad news stories since Thatcher and Co arrived on the scene nigh 40 years ago.

This area/locality is now at absolute rock bottom!

Argus!

Tommy, Richard Branson has virtually nothing to do with Virgin Media.

When Ntl and Telewest merged in 2006, they went to Branson and licensed the Virgin brand name. Like many companies with the Virgin brand name he doesn't own them.

Branded revenue from companies that bear the Virgin name has made him a billionaire.

Terrible news yet again for the area, Labour, Conservatives, Lib-Dem neo-liberalism not working.

Continually being banned by Planet Swans for Porthcawl and then being reinstated.

I'm not, I'm not or never have been a member of any political party its an observation on my part that Labour, Conservatives and Lib-Dems are sh*t.

800 low paid, low quality jobs lost in a dump like Swansea. There seems to be an agenda to run Swansea, Llanelli and West Wales in general into the ground.

Welcome back.

Don't worry the usual suspects will be along soon blaming BREXIT on the jobs going to the Phillipines.

Totally agree.

If we didn't have a WA at least that place would have nothing as well. It is just rubbing our noses in it.

I can’t comment on the pay rates, but it’s 800 less pay cheques coming in to the Swansea area which equates to less money for families in this area, less money being spent in shops and local businesses which impacts on their viability, more jobs shed etc etc etc.

My nephew will be one of those losing his job, there’s not a great deal out there and this is a big blow for a young man.

That is a hell of a blow for all those employed there. I do hope that there is something that the local authority and those up in Cardiff can do to soften the blow.
The local economy is suffering as it is, without this bombshell being dropped.
I hear that the operation is going to go abroad, well that just says it all, taking this type of business offshore. It would appear that the call centre bubble in the UK is going to burst if it hasn't already.
Good luck to all those affected, in finding employment elsewhere.Terrible news!

I wouldn't call it an agenda. Its a policy be it Westminster or WAG that's in full swing.
Never mind, Im sure the Swansea tidal barrage will replace many of the lost jobs.!!!

Yep the suggestion on the news is that Manchester was chosen over Swansea because of better transport links.
