As Hilly says its something that needs to happen, the amount of times at home games when its 0-0 or even when we go 1-0 up our players must be thinking we have the worst support ever.
Away following nobody can complain, great support in numbers and very vocal.
The football club is the only thing in this town that gives Rochdale any positive headlines, so surely we must do all we can to ensure the good times around Spotland remain, its as though its 1995 and were sitting 5th from bottom.
With the results the management and players deliver our support should be constantly heard over the course of 90+ minutes.
Are we still the only club in the football pyramid to stop fans bringing in flags/large banners etc? Creating a positive atmosphere around the place can only be beneficial to everyone who enters the ground on a Saturday and a much more enjoyable experience.
I have mates who would rather watch the likes of City/United on TV as they reckon the atmosphere sounds better than being at a live game at Rochdale.
Exactly when would "Safe Standing" in the Pearl Street be used for sitting down? If people MUST stand then you'd just make a terrace area. "Safe Standing" at this level is pointless.
I'd personally shut down the Thwaites Beer stand. It's a terrible, terrible terrace. How many people are brought to a game, experience the Sandy and never return? Crap view and smells of Arse. Football HAS changed. If you want the traditional terrace experience - yes it is a selling point - then provide a traditional terrace. Don't supply what is almost certainly the worst covered terrace in the Football League.
In summary. Improve the atmosphere by getting the singers and those who'll be led into the same area, which is obviously the Pearl Street End as it is exactly what our club should be selling to attract new fans.

I've made no secret of my fondness for egg-chasing on here before but I really like the terraces in RL and RU. The terrace at Salford City Stadium is a design I would like to use. The large over-hanging roof helps carry noise well but no pillars mean no obstruction. Bar, tuck-shop, bogs all behind the terracing and under the roof so no more getting soaked with drizzle queuing up for a luke warm pie.
This has been done to death and I can still only see one potential solution to it all but there's no way it would please everyone and some would be dead against it.
When we play away from home, we are excellent and in great voice usually. This is because we have people grouped together from both the Sandy Lane and the Pearl Street all as one voice.
The only way to recreate that at home would be to put all the fans from the Pearl Street and the Sandy Lane in the Willbutts Lane stand. Plenty of room for everyone and we could make a lot more noise. The acoustics in there are much better as well. To do this though, you'd have to shut the Sandy Lane completely, and in turn lower the price of the Willbutts to compensate. Put all the Pearl Streeters in the Willbutts as well and give the Pearl Street to away fans. This creates another issue, that being Studds Bar. Surely you can't open it up to away fans during the game, thus making it redundant which the club will never go for even though, due to mismanagement, it's a complete waste of space.
I'd go for it personally but many wouldn't, not least the club. Too many obstacles.

The supporters in the Sandy, who will say they are the best Dale supporters in the stadium are either too selfish or too thick to see that they are the problem.
They need to get their backsides on the seats at the other end and give the team the vocal support that they deserve.

It wouldnt be used for sitting down at our level - but it would be a way of using the existing concrete layout without having to re terrace? Unless there is a way of ripping out a couple of blocks of seats as they are and put up safe barriers that will allow standing ?

There are other ways to create a good atmosphere. Here's a list of videos that explain why Americans are so much better at creating a spectacle than we are.
It wouldn't cost 3k to put in a better PA system, cheerleaders and mascots and bands cost next to nothing. Not sure how much Lasershows are but my guess would be that if they are affordable enough for pubs then surely a football club could get their hands on a decent one.

The only way this can work is to make it compulsory. I've been a Sandy Laner since mid teens and on the occasional trek back I always tell myself "next time it's the TDS for me"! However, no matter how crap the view, it's my Spotland home as it is for other non-regulars as well as locals. I'd love to experience the TDS (as I'm sure would other Sandy regulars) but we're not moving unless you make us! (please)

It's not perfect how we've got it now, but it'll do. Let's worry about getting another 1000 people through the gates on a regular basis first.

Moving on... I agree, lets get more people into the ground and see what that does to the atmosphere. A fullish stadium can still be quiet, but if more people are attending it probably means the team are winning and suddenly the issue about atmosphere just disappears.
Didn't notice a lack of atmosphere because the home fans were split against Leeds last season, for instance? In fact, having singing behind both goals then makes for a brilliant competitive atmosphere, with the away fans thrown into the mix too.

Bloody hell fire Tazzy, you're hard pushed to get any songs out of the Pearl Street! I sit in there and didn't expect a lot of noise being made when I moved over but apart from the cup games and last week, it's pretty much a library. At least there's some variation in the Sandy but you wouldn't realise that.

Being a regular user of both stands are you sure you know which stand is which? There are far more diverse songs in the sandy. The pearl street generally has one chap who springs up out of his chair like hes stood on a hot coal arms aloft "uuuup the daaaale" then a couple of others join in as and when.
