Is this on Nourry?
at 08:51 20 Oct 2024

I mean it’s not really an excuse. Cifuentes will be sacked shortly if he doesn’t get a tune out of this squad and we will go to the next man up who will have the exact same issue - 5’4 wingers on both sides who don’t track back, no full backs of the standard required and a supremely immobile centre forward whose first touch finds the stands more often than controls the ball.

If the mandate is going to remain to play a lone striker then whoever replaces Cifuentes needs to be someone who can teach Frey or Celar to play nice one touch give and go football or else the same issues will remain.

And even with if they achieve that they then need to turn Colback and Varane into Busquets and Xavi or else we will continue to haemorrhage goals.

Is this on Nourry?

Is it all on Nourry? Of course not, it’s to varying degrees on Nourry, Belk and Cifuentes.

Ultimately it is Belk and his chunky recruitment team who do the legwork to put together a database of potential targets. Maybe Nourry is checking them out on his copy of Football Manager while negotiating the deals but he isn’t watching game footage of the Belgian 3rd division and Cifuentes sure as shit isn’t.

The whole ethos - one formation and style of play from first team to u8’s - is from Nourry and so of course it should be asked why the ethos he chose is one at odds with how the first team head coach has historically favoured.

With the above said, it’s still up to Cifuentes to get the best out of this team and it’s clearly not happening right now. He has some mitigating circumstances, Paal desperately needs protecting and the array of LWs he’s been given are all unwilling or unable to actually provide that protection. He’s gone with 3 CB’s today because Dunne cannot play in a two and Clarke-Salter wasn’t available to start. He has no central midfield right now and his 2x centre forward options are Celar who can’t play as a lone striker and Frey who can’t do intricate build up with his touch like P Diddy 750 bottles deep into that lube stash, so we have to be more direct to try and get him into the game. Even with that mitigation though it’s not been good enough, we are far too easy to score against and comically easy to defend against.

I said before the season this was at best a 17th place squad and I still think that’s probably about right - results will pick up and it will be a case of whether we can get a run going - but there is no simple golden ticket out of this situation, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Nourry doesn’t go for the easiest one and make Cifuentes the scapegoat after Sunderland.

I would guess done after Sunderland and we will back to questioning the wisdom of appointing a 27 year old recruitment consultant to build a team and define the club ethos.

Trier though he is, Frey is as much a part of the problem as anyone else.

Paul Smyth having two open strikers for the cross and instead smashing it so far ahead of them they’d need to be 14 feet tall, and then having the audacity to performatively act like they’re the problem is truly peak Paul Smyth.

The kid Morgan we signed from Spurs is ahead of Aoraha now as well so I don’t see much future for him here - hopefully that’s just negativity from my part though as those who watch the kids a lot thought he had something.

Once again, you seem to have gotten overexcited thinking about the FA forcing Carsley to throw a game, which I can’t see anyone has ever suggested even in tongue in cheek being a possibility

Indeed, a cynic might suggest that them having meltdowns over appointing the best candidate available is a rather convenient cover up of the fact that none of the ‘brilliantly sourced’ journos had a clue Tuchel had agreed a deal more than a week ago…

The key takeaway is that the deal was agreed over a week ago so Carsley took one for the team and threw out the FIFA weirdo’s ‘cooking’ setup against Greece to show it doesn’t work.

Massive help to Tuchel who won’t have the same calls to shoehorn everyone in, at least until sometime around Easter.

The end of football?
at 14:12 13 Oct 2024

I mean if City had been demanding an end to all financial regulations you would have a point, but they weren’t because they don’t want a free for all and a never ending fight vs Saudi Arabia.

Their claim here was actually pretty limited - they didn’t want Arsenal to be allowed to have endless free money from Kroenke when they and other clubs go to banks and pay interest for loans, and they didn’t want rules they felt were illegal to be upheld.

Whilst it might have been a bit much when City said there was a cartel running the PL and they were outside of it, ultimately an independent tribunal has agreed with them that the rules were unfair and ultimately illegal. It’s not a great look for the PL..

I mean the whole context of his article is at best naive if not outright lies.

City didn’t sue the PL because they ‘didnt like the rules the clubs voted for’, City sued the league alleging the rules were illegal. And they were right.

It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when journalists are coming up with bllocks like this article to make City the bad guys for flagging that the PL are breaking the law…

Hoopsa Interviews Isaac Hayden
at 21:42 11 Oct 2024

Yeah it was meant as a support of what you’re saying and it highlighting the folly of the recruitment consultants comms strategy when it was even reported by Sky in the deadline day wnkathon that Hayden had been canned at the last second to get Ashby instead, let alone having Hayden himself talk about it.

You can only control the narrative when you control the news, and what is abundantly clear is that very few people who have dealt with the recruitment consultant have any respect for him.

Somewhat tenuously linked to this, acknowledging that Scholes is one of the least charismatic humans ever, he did say something interesting the other week on The Overlap when they asked him about Gerrard - Lampard and people always saying it didn’t work and Scholes should play in the middle and then we would win everything, being that he absolutely hated playing in the middle for England and wanted to be out on the left….
