500,000 pounds of debt couldn't be paid. Owner is entirely to blame, but it's the fans who suffer. Which club will be next? |
| Forum Reply | Good effort at 03:31 30 Jul 2020
A shame, but I fully expected Brentford to win the 2nd leg. Losing 2-3 on aggregate to them is a good effort. Just making the playoffs was a miracle. I said to myself at the time that even if we got thrashed, I'd still be somewhat happy. And I am. As for next season, before signings/loans are made, the team isn't all that bad. Benda comes back as GK, and the back 3, wingbacks & midfield duo are solid enough for this level. The front 3 is a bit of a concern, but we'll see how Cullen goes with a decent run. ......................Benda ........Guehi . Cabango . Cooper Roberts . Fulton . Grimes . Bidwell .......Garrick . Cullen . Dhanda (^ assuming that Woodman, Naughton, Rodon, VDH, Celina, Dyer, Routledge, Gallagher, Brewster, & Ayew will all be gone) Loans will be all well and good, but it's clear we'll need some experienced permanent signings, even if on a free transfer. At absolute minimum, an experienced defender and winger/striker. Unless we can keep some out of contract players. Big offseason coming up. |

Unbelievable. This is a big turning point in Steve Cooper's managerial career, regardless of whether we go up or not. After Luton many of us (me included) were pissed, and the CooperOut topic came back. It seemed almost certain that our playoff hopes were gone, and that he has screwed up again. I finally voted Cooper Out in that poll. But for Sheff Wed 2 games later, he took a risk and changed tactics. It didn't appear to work, but he tinkered with it and brought it back the next week. We're so much better under this 3-4-3 / 3-4-1-2 formation. Roberts and Bidwell are underrated attacking players, and it allows Ayew to play further up the ground. Subs wise, he's been a bit conservative still, but in yesterday's game he made several attacking subs and went for it. 3 of our 4 goals came from subs. I honestly believe every one of the 4 playoff teams has an equal chance of going up. Every team apart from Brentford, who are the strongest on paper, is in good form. The stat lives on: In at least the past 7 seasons (now 8), the team who was in 1st place after 10 games has always finished in the top 6. |
| Forum Reply | The top ten in the championship are all playing each other this weekend at 07:41 11 Jul 2020
Absolutely unreal that we are arguably the 2nd most likely team to take that 6th spot. Next 2 games are absolutely crucial. If we can get something from either or both games, then a slip up against Bristol or Reading isn't our season over. We have to get a point(s) against either Leeds or @ Forest or we're finished. Preston have to win against either Forest or @ Brentford, or they're finished. Derby have to win 2 of Brentford, @ Cardiff, and Leeds. Blackburn have to win against either West Brom or @ Millwall. Millwall have to beat Blackburn at home next week. Bristol have to beat us next week. The above is assuming that in the other games the favourite wins. If Cardiff can't win @ Middlesbrough or vs Hull, then they're in trouble. |

The EFL are corrupt and not fit for purpose. We're stuck in a bad place. We need new ownership, but if we get new owners, the EFL will let absolutely anyone take us over. |
| Forum Reply | If c*****ff win tonight is our Play Off bid over ? at 02:37 8 Jul 2020
I swear Derby are the only team that want the 6th spot. Cardiff may've bottled it. Charlton and Blackburn at home should've been wins. 5 points dropped . And they have Fulham and Derby next up. As for our chances, it's all up to us. If we win everything apart from Forest away, we should make it. But we know that isn't happening. |

Totally agree. I was very disappointed when we let him go with an option to buy, and thought that was the last we would see of him. But as you say, he never got a run of games. It's hard to show your potential if you don't get a chance to. |

Interesting. Peterson is on the retained list. Does that mean that his loan club declined the option to buy? |
| Forum Reply | Wigan fall under administration at 04:36 2 Jul 2020
Fair point. I overlooked the fact that if he leaves, his new team pays the same wages he's on. If he stays, it makes things a lot more difficult financially. |
| Forum Reply | Wigan fall under administration at 14:46 1 Jul 2020
I can't see Ayew staying in the Championship. Imo he's done well enough to get a few offers. As for the other high earners, they will either leave the club or have their original contract expiring. Wages are guaranteed to drop. Coronavirus does make things less stable, but all clubs will suffer similar consequences. And there are quite a few clubs in a worse situation than us. As incompetent as the EFL are, they're not going to let half the division fold. |
| Forum Reply | Wigan fall under administration at 13:11 1 Jul 2020
We're no where near that bad financially. The 'black hole' should be mostly filled, and high earners will be gone at the end of the season, as well as player sales. Had we taken the Stoke path of trying to buy promotion, we would've been screwed. |

Gallagher can't play CM. I can't recall which match(es) he did, but he was barely effective. The problem with Gallagher coming in was that it meant Celina and Dhanda had no chance of starting in their best position. |
| Forum Reply | Cooper Out at 16:59 27 Jun 2020
Me too. He's had a few months to think about his performance, whether he's doing a good job, and what he needed to change up when the season restarted. And it's taken just 2 games for the usual to resume. The decline was such a shame, and is unprecedented. This is a stat I posted about back in October: "For at least the last 7 seasons, no team that has been top after 10 games has finished outside the playoffs. If we are at least competitive, we have a shot at making the top 6." I'm not sure that there has been competitiveness though. And while some of that blame may fall onto the players, it is Cooper's job to motivate them and to tinker with the game plan in order to get a response. Last season Potter had a habit of waking us up after a poor 1st half, but Cooper doesn't imo. [Post edited 27 Jun 2020 17:00]

| Forum Reply | That's one of the biggest chokes I've seen from us in recent years at 16:30 27 Jun 2020
Luton are now undefeated in their last 5 games and 6 of their last 7. Clearly they don't deserve to be 24th - hence they are now 23rd and 4 points from safety. That said, they're a team near the bottom who we beat away, we just came off a quality 3-0 away performance, and were now playing back at home. With an attacking group of Brewster, Ayew, & Gallagher, we should be scoring at least 2 against them. 'Chokes' is the perfect word. I even jokingly asked people today whether we were "going to choke to Luton". After the players made comments after Middlesbrough like 'that's the standard we need to reach every week', this is the performance that gets dished up. Something is very wrong internally. The players have been saying stuff like this all season, yet nothing changes. We will arguably be underdogs in all of our remaining games, and we are 5 points off playoffs. Luton at home was a must win if we wanted to stay in the playoffs race. |

Christ. Thank god the game was on at a bad time again and I didn't have to witness that shambles. So disappointing. What the hell happened? I was enjoying this past week where I had belief that we may actually make playoffs... |

Rodon and VDH are both gone unless we get promoted. |

I just wanted them to win it so that Man City didn't win it. |

Last time I felt so confident heading into a game, it was the Stoke home game. So I'm not taking this one for granted. If we play to our potential, I can see a comfortable 3-1 win. But Luton won't make it easy. Despite being 24th, they are undefeated in their last 4 games & in 5 of their past 6, and have Nathan Jones back. And Nathan Jones did the double over us...with Stoke...
