| News Comment | Could Schneiderlin Leave For Spurs Before The Transfer Window Shuts at 19:22:57
Interesting that Spurs are the subject of this topic. I think you do well to take a leaf out of Spurs book about how you can actually get stronger after your best player leaves. I must confess to being a Spurs fan who would love to see Schneiderlin at WHL as he would add real grit and coordination in our midfield which, despite its quality, has looked all at sea since the departures of Messieurs Modric and van der Vaart. But, up until the Modric case, Spurs had sold two great players to Man U - Carrick and Berbatov. The net receipts from that process were GBP 48m. With the resulting money, Spurs brought in Modric, Kaboul, Bale - who were among the most sought after youngsters in Europe at the time and added a bit of experience in the form of van der Vaart. Other important additions came in the form of the now departed Corluka, Walker, Rose, Pavlyuchenko etc. and complemented well with players that Spurs had developed themselves or who were already at the club such as Dawson, King, Lennon, Defoe, Robbie Keane etc. The immediate aftermath of Berbatov's departure in particular was not a pretty one. Spurs were crap in the league that year though. The same applied to the year before when Berbatov stayed at Spurs against his will and his attitude infected the whole dressing room; a decent Spurs side finished in the bottom half of the table after two straight 5th placed finishes. The object lesson is that it is simply not worth anybody's while keeping a grumpy player at the club. If you can get good money for him sell him and make your squad stronger. Modric may have been an exception to the rule. When Spurs put their foot down when Chelsea came calling, Modric had a stellar season and Spurs finished 4th for the second season in 3. True we have never replaced him and he has gone on to great things at Real Madrid. Ditto Bale. These are two top performers who I don't even think Man U could have held onto when Madrid came calling. But, know what, if you look at the squad as a whole, they are only about three weak links - Dawson, Kyle Naughton and maybe Kaboul. Every other player is 100% solid and with a new coach and perhaps a little more stability in selection, I could see Spurs having a real go this season. Southampton's position now is that they could have some GBP 120m in the bank if the Schneiderlin to Spurs deal goes through. I say spent the money on building lasting success - extending St. Mary's and bringing in five or six of the brightest young talents in Europe. This will lay the foundations of the future - a strong squad and a strong revenue base from a bigger stadium to pay them decent wages. If and when this happens, I am sure thoughts of Schneiderlin, Lallana, Lovren, etc. will be a distant memory in everybody's minds. |
| News Comment | Spurs Set To Offer Central Defender In Part Exchange For Schneiderlin at 10:56:00
Marecelo Brozovic is your best bet I think. He is the next big thing in holding MFs in Europe and will cost half of what Spurs are offering for Schneiderlin. Let's face it, there is a pecking order in football for better or for worse. Spurs realistically can't hold onto a player when Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Man United or Man City come calling. It is too big of a step up in a player's career particularly as players enter the peak years. Likewise, when the next level down - Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham - come calling for a player, it is difficult for players at clubs at the level below them - Southampton, Newcastle, Swansea etc. - to say no. Football is a short career and you never know when these opportunities will come along again and/or if you will break your leg and never play again at your current club - leaving you wondering what could have been. Suck it up Saints fans. Get Brozovic (for about GBP 10m) to replace Schneiderlin and bring in John Anthony Brooks and Johnny Evans to add some solidity athleticism and experience to your defense. You will lose one good player, but the squad overall will be stronger. |
