Boston Match Thread 17:05 - Jan 28 with 11518 viewsDelboy

I must admit that I am really looking forward to this game in the hope of seeing us carry on the fine form we showed on Saturday. Granted the opposition is different and somewhat buoyed by their own victory over the weekend but I am hopeful we can follow up and take advantage of a series of fixtures which could see us spring up the league over the next month. I don't expect Boston to capitulate easily and we do need to be at it from the beginning to prove to any doubters that we are capable of putting together back to back quality performances. One word of caution however based on the goal we conceded at Barnet, its worth noting that Boston also tend to rely on a long throw specialist who is inclined to bomb the goalmouth. Liam Hogan and Sam Waller beware.

Tonight’s Vanarama National League match against Boston United has been postponed.

The match referee conducted a pitch inspection upon his arrival and deemed a small section to be unplayable.

As a Club, we were intent on giving the game every possible chance of going ahead, with our groundstaff working tirelessly since the weekend to prepare the surface for tonight.

However, despite best efforts, the referee was concerned about the corner of the pitch near the David Kilpatrick Main Stand and Smith Metals Family Stand, and has postponed the fixture.

We would like to apologise to supporters of both clubs for the inconvenience.

A rearranged date for the game will be confirmed in due course. Tickets will remain valid for that fixture. Refunds can be claimed by emailing tickets@rochdaleafc.co.uk and will be processed within 48 hours of the fixture concluding on the rearranged date.

We now have a pitch that isn’t fit for purpose.

If it’s that corner, questions have to answered as to why it wasn’t dug up and resurfaced like the centre circle.

It was clear last week that that corner wasn't fit to be played on. Not sure why we did then either.

At what point do the league step in and say, come on guys...

Have to question the ref's decision

Whilst the surface was 'dead' it had no effect on the course of the game. The low ball for Ayinde's goal was made from that patch without any problem about control or footing

I don't see how that could've changed over the past three days, the only factor being a different ref

Not just a pitch.

The only reason the corner in question(if it is the corner) wouldnt have been done at the same time as the centre circle has to financial, whoevers that decision was must take the credit for this and maybe many more PPs.

Only other factor is Hornets played there on Sunday afternoon. I don't think that did the pitch any favours especially the area of the pitch that was of concern to the ref tonight

Don’t think it’s time to go down the route of looking for reasons outside our control. Same as anyone blaming the ref for making the decision.

This is all on RAFC to ensure the pitch is fit for purpose.

Picked up the postponement message on "X".......eleven words and again no apology to all the fans that are already on the road.
There will be many angry supporters hanging around right now.

This Club will always let you down.

The section of pitch that's barest of grass is beyond the tryline, hence it'd hardly have been trodden on during the Hornets game

The wings in general tend not to get much wear and tear during rugby

It was on Saturday, and the club may well have had no reason to think tonight would be any different

I agree in general about lack of work to ensure football gets played, but sounds like the club really weren't expecting any other decision than to play

Totally agree ,this seems a strange decision for sure unless there is something we dont know .Next home game v the Biffos a week today ,weather forecast showing no discernable rainfall so a PP and we might as well give up.

I feel sorry for those who have travelled. From no pitch inspection to being called off at 1815 is shocking. It is not as if there has been lots of rain since Saturday.

This reads as though it is a subjective decision by a ref, that was not expected.

It would be interesting to know if the ref decided on safety grounds or playability grounds.

If not on safety grounds, would be likewise good to know if he consulted both managers before deciding game off.

If the latter, it will be on the lack of bounce for sure. That corner had little bounce v Stoke U21 and Yeovil. The area is right in the corner and if both managers were ok then should be on.

If safety however then that’s poor versus ‘no pitch inspection planned’

Terribly sorry for all fans , especially the Boston fans. Free entry or something for the rematch would be the least we could do.

Agree,if this was next week and the Oldham Massive were already hot footing it up Roche Valley Way there would be pandemonium on an already explosive situation.

What plans are in hand to get this recurring problem sorted? More sand?
