I was referring toe Keith.s point about WW2, Spain was willing to join the Nazi's when the time and conditons were right and we all know just because a political leader is removed/killed/locked up that people will still idolise them and hold those beliefs decades, maybe even centuries after they fell.

Most certainly Franco backed out when he found out the key reasoning was Hitler’s desire to take Gibraltar (I will add here that was also a threat to Spain) to control the straits and routes north and south. Not only would that be one of the most important access routes he also had access to North Africa.
Franco played him well.
