Swansea City v Bristol City : Match day thread : SUNDAY ! on 20:35 - Sep 29 with 1364 views | Dr_Winston | Williams is in no way, shape or form being "forced" to play Abdulai out wide. It's a deliberate choice on a par with Martin's obsession with sticking Latibeaudiere on the wing. Given Ronald's current struggles a start for Bianchini is overdue, or at least some decent time as a sub. Players aren't going to get match sharp if they're not playing matches. Vipotnik has taken a hell of a lot of (mostly unwarranted) stick for his sub appearances yet played well when given actual meaningful game time today.

Swansea City v Bristol City : Match day thread : SUNDAY ! on 20:14 - Sep 29 by jack247 | Can’t agree with this at all. 20 man matchday squads and 5 substitutions are making it more like rugby where the half backs and front row are routinely subbed after an hour and it’s effectively a different team for the last 20 minutes. We aren’t in a position to do that, most clubs are. He broadly makes the same substitutions every game - full back, two central midfielders, one winger and the striker. He’s forced into putting square pegs into at least two of those holes. It’s no surprise to me that we are usually the better team in the first half and never are in the second half. Other teams go up a gear in the last 20/30 minutes while we limp through with a patched up team. Cooper and Cabango have definitely improved this season. |
Great assessment, the problem lies as you say with our squad depth, until we get another 2/3 decent championship level players or the likes of parker, govea and wilson step up it will be the same every game.

No, but he absolutely has to be as droppable as the rest of the squad. His performance today was risible, yet he played the full 90 and no doubt will captain the side again in midweek. It's not healthy.

My opinion, but if we’d signed players in reasonable condition in the summer, Abdulai wouldn’t have to cover the wings and we wouldn’t have to play Peart-Harris up front for 20 minutes. Bristol City had Naki Wells on the bench, we had no strikers. I thought Vipotnik had a good first half today. It’s the end of September though, the condition both he and Bianchini arrived in was totally unacceptable. We didn’t have to sign them but we did. Eventually, they’ll both be in shape and I’m sure Vipotnik, if not both, will start. If the young players like Parker and Govea also get back into contention, Williams won’t be at such a disadvantage. Even with options in every position, I think most of us would have taken top 10 at this point.

The three, Parker or Govea should have made their mark this week. I genuinely thought they would or could have played or been in the squad. As did many others. Nobody can tell me that Wilson couldn’t have done a better job than Peart Harris. He, Allen and Abdulai were horrendous today. As they have been every time they get on the pitch.

Choices are being made to concentrate on a certain number of players to the detriment of others. In some cases (Abdulai) these choices are beginning to have a damaging effect on a players career. One man and one man alone makes these decisions.

I fear we are expecting / hoping for too much from these three. They don’t have the experience and they’re going to take time to settle in. Of course, they’ll need to be on the bench at least if they’re going to demonstrate their worth.

Our owners have more than just form for letting managers down in transfer windows. I’m sure he’d have loved Jerry Yates on the bench today. Very much doubt he would have been happy with sending him to Derby if he knew we’d have to rely on Cullen alone until the end of September and have no strikers on the bench from a 20 man matchday squad today.

If it is Williams choices, surely after today he can see those three are of no use to the team, not only in the roles they play but overall. As I said during the game. Sorry Joe, but … He shoukd be angry, he is of course but maybe that anger is based in some ways on his own choices ?

Not going to argue with that. Are the first two fit? Either would be a better option than Abdulai, whilst also freeing him up to come on in central midfield. Both should be in the 20. Can’t comment on Wilson, but it’s ludicrous we’re down to a striker who had to modify his game (much less pressing) to conserve energy, an under 21 starlet and an on loan midfielder. Every opponent brings on either a powerful or tricky striker for the last 20/30 minutes.

A bit OTT there I think Keith. We've seen about 20 minutes in total of MPH and not seen Abdulai used properly all season. Joe has played well in other games this season. I wouldn't put any of those three in the list of our biggest problems today. He's been here for nine months and has been given a hell of a lot of leeway in terms of how he builds his squad, yet there's no real discernible style to what we do. Flashes here and there, like at times in the first half today, but not a vast amount. It doesn't help that in the eyes of some absolutely none of it is his fault. Some isn't, some is. If we could see that he was making the best use of everything he had available then maybe I could get on board with some of the arguments about squad quality, but it's pretty apparent to me that this is not the case.

In the eyes of others, he’ll never get any leeway because he used to work with Russell Martin. I agree some is his fault certainly. He’s far from perfect, but judging him with a squad like this is akin to judging Abdulai on the wing. He’s trying to win 90 minute games in 70 minutes because he knows everyone else has a stronger bench. I said yesterday we’d be the better team in the first half and would be hanging on in the second, especially if we were ahead. If he can deliver a lower mid-table finish with a squad like this, that will be a success. 9th at this point is better than i expected.

The problem with these performances are the first halves are always so much better than the second halves. I wouldn’t be surprised if we end the season as the team with the most points dropped from winning positions. Mid table - yeah probably. I’d take that. Think the vast majority would have taken it at the start of the season

The Norwich commentators made a point the other week, how much energy our team use pressing and winning the ball back, and that it was impossible to keep it up for 90 mins - and needed a good bench to succeed with those tactics.

They are absolutely right. It’s probably my biggest criticism of Luke Williams at the moment. He knows and the opposing manager knows, that our attacking players will slow down in the second half and we haven’t got the bench to replace them. It’s obvious we’re going to be under the cosh when we start flagging and our opponents bring on fresh players. He has slowly started to address it. Vipotnik in particular but also Ronald and Eom pressed less yesterday (quite possibly as we’ve got a midweek game). Naughton has started in place of both Tymon and Key recently. Maybe so we’ve got some energy coming on in the second half.

Our squad is not strong enough to play football the way it is now played. Football is no longer 11 v 11 its 16 v 16 and we don't have enough quality to play it. Opposition managers continually make substitutions earlier than us because they know it will not drastically weaken their side, Williams has to hold back because whoever he puts on is not really close to being as good as what is on the pitch, that is why we make later substitutions. Williams is often criticised for his substitutions, I have done it myself, but he really doesn't really have enough strength on the bench. It all comes down to the number of players leaving in the summer and not enough quality replacements coming in. Season on season we seem to have some decent players coming in but not in the numbers to replace those leaving. Surely a couple of the forwards we loaned out would have made our bench stronger.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying. There’s a very clear pattern to most of our games. He could go for a less aggressive style, the way we press is always going to tire players quickly. Imagine we could bring the likes of Ollie Cooper on to run himself into the ground doing that for 20 minutes, rather than starting and having to pick and choose when to play to his strengths. Williams, Watson and Coleman will be acutely aware our matchday squad js lacking. Williams definitely has a hand tied behind his back. Possibly the other two have as well.

Agree. We need 18-19 good players. We have 12/13. You have to blame the owners/Coleman for this. Luke Williams would have wanted another 4 or 5 in, but obviously got ignored.
