To the best of my knowledge I have never sat down to watch an Ingmar Bergman film.
They look so unremittingly glum, but on the other hand the stills always look so artistic.

Am I missing anything?

I'd say give the "Seventh Seal" a try. I finally saw it right when the pandemic was kicking on so hit home. Potentially glum but matching wits with the Grim Reaper in a game of chess while heading home from the Crusades and meeting a circus on the way gives it several dimensions. Truly a classic.

Brian, you clearly love film so you have to give Bergman at least one go. I've not seen many but the one I'd suggest is probably his best known, The Seventh Seal. Unremittingly glum it probably is but still worth watching.

The Silence - also very glum
Fanny & Alexander - surprisingly jolly family saga…even in colour!
Smiles of a Summer Night (?) - barely remember it, but recall it as sweet more than bitter

I was going to say she was good in Casablanca but that wouldn't have been worthy of even the Corny Jokes thread.

The Seventh Seal - was that the one where Death is playing Chess with Chris Whitty?

No, that was Jacob Rees-Mogg with Chris Whitty.

The grass is always greener.
