I am a Tory . I think its a masterstroke , I know the polls have been wrong recently but IMO people were reluctant to say they were Tory or Brexit because of fear of being labelled a bigot or rascist . I expect LePen to do better than she is polling for the same reason .
The Lib Dems will try to set this up as Brexit 2 but their past duplicity and a light shone on their other policies and Little Tim will dull that down .
This will finish Labour for a decade IMO although they may nick a few back in Scotland where they are waking up to the SNP .
Shoots the " not elected " fox stone dead as well .
Hopefully at least 100 majority so we can get on with it and
hopefully Baz will not be a member by 8th June .
Good luck mate ..

I fail to see how this is in the best interests of the UK population.

We have less than 2 years to negotiate one of the complex and most important negotiations in our island's history, where millions of jobs could be impacted, and we're now going to fanny around for two months with an election in order to bolster the Conservative majority.

Silver linings being it could end Corbyn, thereby helping speed up Labour's return to being an effective opposition, and the Lib Dems may win a few seats back.

Actually serious negotiations with the EU won't start for another couple of months as they work out their own negotiating positions, so if there was a time to do it, it is now.

Given the difficulty and complexity of the negotiations May needs to negate the power of the backbenches given the small majority, and being voted in herself ( and not via Cameron) with a big Majority will give her the position of strength she needs to hold the strongest negotiating positions in Europe.

Usually vote Labour but don't think I can with Corbyn in charge

Won't vote Lib Dems as I voted Brexit and the country doesn't need another referendum

I've never voted Torie

I haven't a clue who I will vote for in June and I reckon a lot of people think the same

I think it's really simple. It's now a Ref on the NHS because if May wins, there will not be an NHS by the following General Election. She's flip flopped on Brexit and now a GE, not that surprising with plod and CPS breathing down the neck of her slim majority over fraudulent election spending previously....

The biggest problem the UK has is it's print media, 90% controlled by the Porngraher Desmond, dead child phone hacking Rupert Murdoch and Paul Dacres Nazi appologists. A cursory glance over Labours policies tells anyone not only that they are good but popular. No doubt this spooked May too as the message is getting out despite the one party rule press reporting.

All you need to ask is 'Can you live without an NHS and can you afford hugely costly Health Insurance.'

Interesting times.

Yes the LibDems formed a coalition government because that's what the country effectively elected at the time - a pretty tough time on our history although probably not so tough for the average LibDem voter. I thought that the coalition government was better than what this one has shown so far and in all probability it was better than the one that'll be elected in June. It was a half decent goverment thrown together in very dificult times. It wasn't about 'getting your way' it was about 'getting a difficult job done'. Not about self-indulgence, but that's exactly what many LibDem voters are all about - self-indulgence. So they'll indulge themselves over something massively important to them this time and hopefully that will be something that IS actually massively important on the scale of things, but if not then we'll get by somehow I'm sure.

Never been politically aligned before, but this is why I joined the Lib dems after 2015.
Although they were naive, I thought the coalition government was the best of a bad situation.
I hope there are some gains, but can't see anything but an increase in the tory majority, which I can't see who would benefit from.

Master stroke ? No it's not, it's stupid and irresponsible. Playing games when we're in the middle of one of the most crucial episodes of recent British history.
Arrogance supreme.

whilst I disagree with most of corbyns policies, he actually does come across as a decent principalled bloke. I think he'll do a bit better than people think but won't challenge the Tories.

'but can't see anything but an increase in the tory majority, which I can't see who would benefit from.'

The Corporations who fund the Tory Party, then employ the Tory MP's when they leave politics, and steal £35 Billion every year from the British People and Economy, in corporate tax evasion facilitated by Tory Governments. NHS is next.

How does the health system in Spain work ?

Mine costs me £5000 a year as I pay UK tax. It's free for UK pensioners but is at risk even to them of being withdrawn post Brexit, unless they can cobble together reciprocal arrangements for each others Nationals.

UK Gov gives £3000 annually to Spain for ex-pat pensioners, because it averages £9000 a year per pensioner in the UK, meaning a saving of £6000 annualy to the NHS for every pensioner living in Europe. Health costs here about 30% of those in the UK. So on the figures, viable health insurance post NHS will not only see millions unble to access health care but even those that can afford it, paying tens of thousands for a family, for something which is currently free. It's end game for the NHS which I hope for all makes voting Labour simple. I know you'll disagree which is fine, but May will sell to the Yanks waiting in the wings like vultures and the British people will be the biggest losers. With no NHS. Austerity has all but killed it, now comes the sell off. It cannot continue on current funding being both cut and eroded year on year. It's not sustainable. If May wins, it will be gone within 2 years.

A British Constitution question....I seem to recall(from my youth), that there were no real defining time periods for a British General Election. About every five years was the rule of thumb and the PM could call a vote at any time. Now I read that there is a day, Thursday in May(!), must be five years and must have consent of two thirds of MP's. These rules come in recently...or was I sleeping through class?

UK Fixed Term Parliaments Act was passed in 2011 at the instigation of the Liberal Democrats, as one of their conditions for supporting the coalition. May will need a two-thirds majority in parliament to force an election, under the Act. I must admit I missed it at the time, too.

Big chat in politico circles is that the Tory overspending was going to lead to a spate of forced by elections so she's decided to just do it.

Seems very strange timing to me. Tories should win comfortably, but snap elections haven't always gone well for the incumbent party

Usually vote Tory as I generally feel they might be shits, but are the best bunch to keep the country running.
However they now seem hell bent on being the personification of evil with the gutting of NHS and ploughing on with Brexit without coming up for air.

Would vote labour, but they've made it perfectly clear how they feel about my sort (a Jew)

Lib Dems it is :|

It was the Labour party who introduced PFI intitiatives into the NHS plunging some trusts into Greek like debt , requiring a bail out and no hope of repaying .

The NHS remained viable under Thatcher , the current government are not as right wing as that IMO .

I am sure that the care in Spain is very good but the fact is that many Ex Pat pensioners come home and avail themselves of the NHS (with every right) when they need more than routine care .Maybe to recuperate with family or the need for follow up care They come home for pacemakers , joint replacement, chemo , and specialist hospital care from Moorfields and the like IE .. the expensive stuff . That is why we hold back on the full payment because we still have an unquantifiable liability of the expensive care .

Austerity has not all but killed the NHS , there is a squeeze on routine care agreed especially GP services and we need to rethink that a bit , but have an accident ,a heart attack or stroke , a serious illness and they come up trumps every time in my personal experience .
