As it happens I am not as anti UKIP as many on here. A couple of months back I saw an interview with Farage where he said that he was neither left or right and that this was an outdated approach to politics and that he wanted to appeal as much to Labour voters as Tories. If I believed him which I don't and didn't just think he would go straight into government with the Conservatives given half a chance then I may have considered it.
The funny thing is that he is actually right. There was a big survey of social attitudes a year or so ago which found that most people were to the right of the Tories on issues such as immigration, Europe; and law and order but at the same time to the left of the Labour party on the NHS,and also wanted the railways and the former public utilities , which let's be honest have royally screwed us all, re-nationalised. They also wanted tougher regulation of the banks and much more cheaper housing.
IMO it's hard to argue with any of these but the 2 major parties are so set in their own ideologies and in supporting their own vested interests ; the tories with their links to big business and labour with the unions, that they will never address these issues. As Disco pointed out with his reference to the East end Labour routinely ignore their own constituencies and that is why they are also about to be slaughtered in Scotland where a real alternative has emerged.

I know it's childish and slightly off topic but a local farmer whose land backs onto the main road has put up a huge billboard-size Conservative sign with a picture of the candidate Geoff Hoare. Bearing in mind that this sign is basically in the middle of nowhere, I was mightily impressed to see that, within 24 hours of it going up, someone had painted a dodgy moustache on Mr Hoare. Suddenly, his confident, reassuring smile looks like the hopeful, predatory smirk of the man in a Mac, hanging around at the school gates with a bag of sweets.

Respect is due.

given the ukip , labour ding dong on here , im surprised this has not been brought up on this thread..neither come out well in it. even our own sir les ferdinand is on it.

given its written by new labours trevor phillips i thought i would put my foot thru the tv screen when ch4 broadcast this a couple of weeks ago, on the contrary i thought it was very good, other than the blair cameo in the last couple of minutes when i wanted to don iron mans helmet and fling a flying headbutt in his direction.

I watched this at stupid o'clock the other day when I was auditioning for the British insomnia team. I wasn't really sure what to expect but I have to say that I was very impressed with Trevor Phillips' reportage (Blair suckfest notwithstanding). I really liked the section when he and Nigel Farage got into things* and discussed why he saw Trevor as 'the enemy'. Very interesting show. Less said about Blair the better - what an acute rectal smart.

* BTW, my autocorrect just suggested 'thongs' here. I'll just leave you with that for a moment. You thought it. You can't unthink it.

So UKIP will protect people who wish to discriminate against gay marriage or those 'expressing a religious conscience'.

This, to my mind, is bigotry, and their manifesto promises to enshrine such bigotry under the guise of 'religious conscience'. Presumably they will extend legal protection to fundamentalists who with 'religious conscience' call for the downfall of Britain.

i dont think the director of bbc news is much of a fan, during a live farage speech in harlepool this morning it was interuppted with a ' NEWS FLASH'...."keith harris is dead" ...Along with a picture of orville Iin the background.

all with narration by a solemn newsbroadcaster , as if reggie bosenquet was announcing the death of winston churchill.Or walter croncite announcing the assination of JFK.

Perhaps we'll get to see keith and orvile lying in state aka lenin , with richard dimbleby providing commentry . epic stuff from the beeb.

Yeah yeah yeah, we get that you'll do anything to demonise UKIP as bigots, but why would he do this (why would anyone do this??!!)...

"Presumably they will extend legal protection to fundamentalists who with 'religious conscience' call for the downfall of Britain."

When the linked article has him pegged as believing this...

"The party’s leader, Nigel Farage, has repeatedly emphasised his belief that the UK has a Judaeo-Christian culture and says there needs to be a more muscular defence of the country’s Christian heritage."

And as spoken like a true bigot, Farage goes on to say...

“This does not, of course, mean we should be disrespectful of other faiths, only that ours is fundamentally a Christian nation and so we believe Christianity should be recognised by government at all levels."

The Labour mantra, If you're not a Labour voter, you're a racist bigot and what's yours is mine and I'll sit on my fat arse all day spending it on eBay, cos I need another cot for my fifteenth baby.

No offence taken - I'm not a Labour voter.

But it is bigotry to extend protection to some citizens of a country based purely on their faith and/or beliefs, which is what they're proposing to do.

Stayed away from this as it really has been hard to come to a decision.
In Orkney we're the strongest Lib Dem seat in Scotland and apart from when they ditched Charles Kennedy as leader I've always voted for them but the SNP are playing a blinder tbh.
If we never had a referendum last year I would 100% be voting for them as they have run the 'budget' of Scotland well (Orkney and Shetland get treated poorly compared to many areas imo though) and seem to keep improving their popularity year on year. Forget for a moment how you feel the Scottish budget may be too high and unfair on England but just how it is spent and overall I have to say they have been doing pretty good.
Of course the question of Independence is my problem and by voting SNP I would give it more credence and ultimately I still think Scotland faces many challenges in going it alone but the flip side is that we were given assurances that Scotland should be leading the debates of the UK as an important cog in the whole machine, a few months later and we have the temerity to have a definitive say with a strong representation at Westminster - f##k off who do you think you are! Tbh in has played into the SNP hands and I can't believe how stupid politicians can be till the desperation of power gets the better of them, really has been very poor how quickly they (Con, Lab and Lib) have turned on the bog standard Scottish voter.
As a footnote Nicola Sturgeon is streets ahead of Alex Salmond but the problem I can see is that Salmond will be the leader of SNP in Westminster which ultimately will end up being confrontational to an extent but it has to be remembered that he did lead a minority government and had to negotiate plenty in that time a d obviously successfully since they returned with a majority at the next election.

So in your considered opinion,if the SNP engineered another referendum(and it looks likely)is the feeling on the street more amenable to independence now? What happens if it's again a "no" - do we get further aggravation and maybe a "best out of five" type scenario?
I'm worried since any SNP "led" coalition would mean very little positive government *would be achieved and a core agenda firmly set.

* yeah,I know

There has only been one official mention of a new referendum that I can remember and that was roundly denounced by most, also at a couple of televised debates in front of an audience the mention of it has been booed by many too.
If the SNP sweep through the election as predicted I would expect many to call for another one but if the SNP haven't learnt from the Lib Dem demise then this could end up being a poisoned chalice in having power at Westminster?
You have to remember I live in the area which returned the highest NO vote so I'm maybe not seeing things that may be happening other areas but I have just been in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ayrshire for 3 weeks and I never saw anything other than good political debate centred around Westminster in all honesty.
If there wasn't the issue of Independence I would recommend the SNP as partners in a coalition
