Saints Targeting Hasenhuttle's Ex Players Tuesday, 11th Dec 2018 12:21 Saints are being linked with giving new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl a reunion with a couple of his ex players in January.
The two players in question are Davie Selke a striker who played under Hasenhuttle at RB Leipzig before joining Hertha Berlin for around 8.5 million euros in July 2017, his first season started with injury but in the Bundesliga he eventually played 27 times scoring 10 goals.
This season has not been so prolific and the 6ft 4 1/2 inch 23 year old has managed only 1 goal in 12 games, although he has mainly been used off the bench.
Former Germany striker Klaus Fischer described Selke as being a "young Miroslav Klose", comparing his stature and strength in the air with that of Germany's all-time record goalscorer. Selke himself, however, cites former Bayern Munich striker Mario Gómez as being his idol.
The fee quoted seems to be around £13-14 million.
Also said to be on Saints radar is Dayot Upamecano a 20 year old central defender who is still at RB Leipzig.
Upamecano who has just turned 21 is French and has played for his country at U21 level, he signed for RB Leipzig in January 2017 from RB Salzburg for 10 million euros and he now has a solid 3 seasons as a first team player behind him.
The fee for this seems to be around the £30 million mark suggesting that Saints are willing to spend to make sure they avoid relegation, however if they do that then they will need to sell.
Whilst they might not need to raise the entire £45 million, they would certainly need to raise at least half of it, not just for the transfer fee but also wages and that could be done by trimming the squad.

I think these would be great signings for southampton. There still young but can make a impact at the club and their value and griwth as a player will rise for years. They also both have olayed under the new manager so know his system, standards so can make a immediate impact.

A striker who can hold up play would be great, but I worry at just how many expensive strikers we’ll have at the club. I’m convinced we need a £30m centre-back in January, but I’m worried about buying a 21 year old. We have some young promising defenders and the club, what we need is an old head who can provide some leadership and get the best out of their partner the way that Fonte used to. I think the issue now is that all of our central defenders are terrified of making mistakes which is causing them to make more mistakes. I think the only business we need in January is to get Gary Cahill in on loan. But the club doesn’t like getting players in on loan and when it does the club doesn’t like using those players.

The striker doesn't sound much better than what we have so what's the point. And as someone said the defender is younger than what we need. I'd guess these are just names been thrown around simply due to the manager connection.

Carrillo just won November La Liga player of the month award.....I believe he is on a season long loan and cannot be recalled until June 2019 which is a massive shame as he may have been very good. Unsure why so many of you guys are obsessed with Gary Cahill....

For anybody who's not heard of Dayot Upamecano, I suggest you do some research. This kid's a beast in the making - composed, quick and very strong with skill and touch to match. He's already twice the player of any of our current crop of centre backs and will be among the top 5 defenders on the planet within the next five years. He's that good.

Managers like to sign former players; Pardew did (very successfully in 2009/10) and most of HIS squad eventually helped Nigel Adkins win two titles (with no disrespect to NA). Pochettino got Cortese's OK to sign Wanyama but his insistance on "rehabilitating " Dani Osvaldo was a catastrophic burden on the club for years after he "jumped ship" to Spurs. (This is surely an episode Pochettino will avoid mentioning in his future autobiograhy) Koeman bought a string of players whilst taking the pick of the Dutch league and, to be fair, most of them paid off handsomely for a couple of seasons with success. But things don't always work out as planned and although Claude Puel rated Boufal from the French League, he didn't cut it in the Prem. which has little place for individual talent to shine at the expense of team effort. Whether Puel was "a failure" with Saints is still a subject of discussion, but Pellegrino was given a squad which was already misfiring and his signing of Carrillo was condemned by many at the time, but his recent performances in Spain suggest that he might still have a future with Saints.(?) THANKFULLY ...Mark Hughes didn't bring any of his "doomed" Stoke players with him, but one still wonders if he actively approved all of this summers purchases ...or if they were already on Les Reed's short list to sign (?) I'm sure neither man will admit that publicly. Now that we've handed the "poison chalice" to Hasenhuttl, it remains to see if his former players can cut it in the Prem. if we can afford to buy / loan them in January . As we have seen many times in the past, players who succeed in one club can flop in their next ... the Prem. is full of disasterous moves like; Torres' to Chelsea and Andy Carroll's to Liverpool. We can only pray that common sense prevails at SMS in future dealings. If we can find anyone like Fonte, Lambert and Mane then things might really look up. The alternative will be even more debt and having to put up with an overpaid, ineffective squad for the next few years - in whatever league we end up in.

Have a good clear out in Jan and get rid of least 5 or 6 fringe players, most of whom have high salaries yet offer nothing or very little to the first team. We can then sign 1 or 2 quality players, including the 20 year old defender who has just turned 21 and learn how to spell our manager's name !! :-)

I just wonder if any club will want any of the players we place on the transfer list. We also have to pay £20 million for the privilege of signing Danny Ings, who Liverpool have stitched us with. Not played now for how many games. Add this to Mr Kruegers comments of a quiet January,I cannot see any signings.

Makes good sense that we bring in two players in vital areas (defence and attack) that RH knows well, and who wants to take the step into the promising land of the PL. Bring them in , please. I have full trust, that RH knows what he is doing here.

Just because the likes of Hoedt, Yoshi, Boufal, Carrillo, Austin, Davis and Clasie aren't flavour of the month doesn't mean to say that other clubs wouldn't be willing to pay transfer fees to secure their services next month. Add in the potential of Gabbi moving to Italy for a reasonable fee and not only have we taken a chunk of wages off the books but also got some money in to fund a couple of decent players. If we can ship out Forster and one or two fringe players as well I think the squad is going to be capable of stringing together some decent results and come March the relegation threat could be an issue of no concern. We shall see.

As long as we get rid of Ward Prowse and Targett it will be seen as progress in January.

"Getting rid of " ...seems to be the phrase of the week, but as usual all those internet types who run a football column on their bedroom computer are coming up with all manner of weird and wonderful ideas about signing players no-one has heard of. .the latest (today) is a re-run of the " return of Adam Lallana " saga as Liverpool seem to be streamrollering in the Prem. and one step further in CL what is Adam's future now ? I wonder how fans on this site would entertain AL's return to SMS. Maybe a poll, Nick?

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Leyton Orient Polls |
