Die Hard Saints Fans Set To Create Siege Mentality
Wednesday, 13th Jan 2016 08:00

Saints seem likely to get their smallest attendance of the season so far when they face Watford tonight, but that could work in their favour.

Saints look set to record the lowest attendance of the season so far when Watford visit this evening, there are plenty of tickets still available and the attendance is likely to be lower than the 29,573 that watched the 3-0 win over Norwich City earlier in the season.

But that could work in Saints favour, when the attendance drops it is often the most critical fans who are first to show their dissent by not turning up and that means that rumblings in the crowd are less than usual and the die hard fans who turn up whatever the results get behind the team and create a siege mentality.

This is just what Saints need as they go into a critical week, with two Premier League home games in the space of four days a couple of wins would set the season up for a surge up the table rather than looking over our shoulders a little at the bottom four.

Certainly the team with several key players back are well overdue a couple of back to back wins again and they are more than capable of it.

So although there will be plenty of seats empty this evening, there will be no let up in the atmosphere, traditionally in situations like this Saints supporters have stood up and been counted and tonight we will find that out again.

I think one of the major problems we have Nick, is the away support taking over so much of the Northam stand.
It was like a home game for Palace!
For other previous well supported teams, a similar story.
I appreciate the fact that there is no choice really in giving the away side a percentage of the seating, and to a lesser extent when not cup games.
Where the problem lies is with the then almost total disbursement of our OWN vocal support! They get wherever they can,but amongst the happy clappers in areas where you & I both sit for example, it is diluted to the extent of being almost non-existent.
Palace were once again vociferous in their support, and they are a credit to their club.
We are unable to compete as long as our vocal support is scattered. The answer may have been to have stuck the away support on the 'bend' to include some of Itchen stand.
I am guessing this was not deemed a good idea due to hospitality boxes being above there?
Having been away with Saints many times in the past plus a few times recently, the majority of grounds offer no more than they have to for view and never the prime position offered by Southampton F C.
Unless or until either a new stand or top tier go on Northam stand,it will not change.
No easy solution,Nick! Enjoy tonight,if we can!

I'm totally with mbtsfc, this is a matter that needs addressing with the club. It's possible that they don't realise how it effects the fans, which then has the knock on effect of not motivating the team.

Does anyone have Ralph Krueger's email address? I feel a strongly worded, impassioned plea coming up

Nick I've gone to football for many years and have to say that the biggest moaners I've encountered are the season ticket holders.
They seem to think that having a season ticket makes them more of an expert than everyone else and also gives them the right to spout off at every game.
