The King's speech?
at 03:29 27 Dec 2024

I very much doubt he bothers to read LfW or any of the fan platforms for that matter, unless he's a glutton for punishment and vitriol etc.

I read his address and found it well-written, informative and reasonably reflective while maintaining the mostly positive 'spin' one would expect from any official statement of this kind. Its timing is neither here nor there. I work as a professional editor and, if I were evaluating his text, I'd probably change very little of it. (By contrast, for the record, Marti has taken to telling us he has his 'thoughts' about the players and our injury record but he isn't going to share them, which is apparently perfectly ok with some.)

Nourry's tone, given his position, is also fine overall. As a person with family members on the spectrum, I would, however, be genuinely interested to know what you mean by calling it 'very autistic' if you'd care to elaborate.

I gave a view and nothing more than a passing sarcastic opinion about posters who say the same thing time and time again without evidence about Nourry, which is actually quite tame compared to what other non-vilified and/or idealised writers on this board publish. I wasn't 'hijacking' anything - I've as much right to write here as you do. However, I have regularly received completely unprovoked abuse on 'perfectly good' threads of my own, if you care to go back and read a few of them. Meanwhile, you complain I regularly insult others when what I regularly do is in fact to offer up fiercely contested views and supported argument on all things QPR - while insulting/dehumanising me yourself (as a 'walking thesaurus' now) to add to the many abuses I receive here across the lexical spectrum, irrespective of what I say.

Sure I can be tart, fractious and trenchant, but just because I critique the simplistic/black and white groupthink consensus that Nourry is the devil's spawn and Marti can do no wrong, while reflecting others' vindictiveness back to them, I get treated by a few here as some kind of online punchbag. It's just pathetic.

If I write 'drivel', you come across as a pre-programmed, insecure idiot who doesn't read what I actually write and resorts to a childish button to childishly block me anyway, as you can't deal with difference of opinion and properly supported counter-argument.

Give me strength!

I see why you would say that, but I actually don't think it's quite right because, for me, our best performances (Watford, Norwich and Preston are those that come to mind) have been no more than decent but hardly sensational, and also far too few and far between. When we've been poor, however, we've been intolerably poor, and it's been happening regularly enough to suggest it's a preparation and coaching/set-up issue.

If a polite request to stop misrepresenting what I write gets construed by you as somehow inflammatory and/or condescending, so be it - we clearly live in different perceptual universes!

So you won't repeat anonymous rumours? I know this board has its share of tedious ITKers, but you win all the prizes, sir!

I would play exactly the same team so they can show us what they're made of.

I didn't say, and don't think, Marti is 'the problem' with the club (I think all our problems, like most problems, have more than one cause), so please stop caricaturing what I do say! For the record, and it seems I have to keep repeating it, I think he is also responsible for the squad he's been a key part of building, as well as the playing style and tactical set-up etc. If he gets credit for performances and results like Watford, Norwich, and Preston etc., which he and the team deserved, serious questions need to be asked of him and them after dire showings like Bristol City, the Oxford first half, and once again today. The fact that, because of some people's fear of Nourryvirus, this sensible plea for sensible balance goes on being seen as somehow inflammatory IS a problem, however.

I also think hindsight is 20/20 and, once again, Marti went into print to say he was almost completely satisfied with our squad at the end of August.

I couldn't agree more, but of course unless and until the 'new' Nourry makes another (more informative) presidential address and/or Marti unburdens himself to the fanbase rather than doing his usual thing of merely alluding darkly to his dissatisfaction (presumably, he's either under instruction by the club not to discuss important issues or is keeping mum for his own Nourry-esque reasons), we're likely to be none the wiser.

Morrison has actually only played around half a dozen times for us this season, I think, so he's not the embedded linchpin Captain Cook is, but he's really been stepping forward of late, and the position he's in, and we're in, make his absence feel like a double whammy! I suppose it's at least a crumb of consolation that the club don't seem to be trying to pull the wool over our eyes about how long he'll be out this time.

If you think the five massively successful managers, players and chefs I cited are all 'psychopaths', I suggest you see a psychiatrist - or maybe just buy a dictionary!

I could also have cited the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Bobby Moore, and even John Sitton. It isn't only about 'winning at all costs', which is why I included the likes of Ramsey and Pierre White, where the concept doesn't even make sense. It's about the marriage of passion and perfectionism - as Sitton put it, 'wanting to be a good player every game'. That needs fierceness and a kind of obsessive commitment to, as Woody Allen once said, 'keep turning up'.

The only Rs who consistently 'turn up' are some of the mad and lovely people who go to the games week in, week out. This team, and this management team, follow one good game (or good half) with a bad one, or atrocious one, irrespective of who's playing. That, for me, is indicative of a lack of pride, passion and/or, as we saw in today's first half, utter ineptitude. As to the second half, the 'improvement' was as much down to Swansea 'putting their cue on the rack', as anything else. The fact that 15 minutes of reasonable possession (possession that still achieved next to nothing in front of goal) is getting paludits mainly attests to how low people have allowed their expectations to be managed down.

Seconded, but I'm sure all the usual suspects will still tell you - as indeed some of them are tonight - MC is doing a wonderful job 'with the hand he's been dealt'. They probably blame Nourry for how he tactically sets up as well.

Gaffer on today's defeat
at 20:04 26 Dec 2024

Jesus wept!

Leaving aside the wearyingly familiar lack of journalistic passion and curiosity of the official club interviewer/ commentator, why even do the interview if you aren't prepared to share at least some of those thoughts with the fanbase?

It's been a weirdly interesting holiday for those who have eyes that can see and ears that hear! Nourry shows signs of turning into anti-Nourry/Nourry Mark 2 and gets brickbats for it, while MC appears to be turning into the original version and gets praise!

In the words of The Doors, people are strange!

If he can't explain it, other than to say 'that's football', how do and he the players expect to put it right?

Scary!

Your description of today's debacle as 'sub par' reminded me of an ALan Partridge skit where he describes mistakenly shooting dead some mocked-up hostages instead of the terrorists as 'sub-optimal'!

The point is, he hasn't merely been 'dealt a hand' - he's as much dealer as dealee! He can't control the injuries, sure, but they're his players and it's his team, his playing style, his tactics, his handiwork! Can any of the Martiphiles/Nourryphobes (who often seem to be the same people) produce a single shred of evidence to the contrary?

Absolutely absurd/perverse statement when the 'original' injured players like Frey, Chair and JCS are actually coming back - or in fact have already come back. Of course, Cooke will be a big miss, and the Morrison one is really unfortunate, but the players and coach have to deal with it. If we sink, it'll mainly be because the remaining 20 of the 22 aren't good enough, committed enough, or well coached enough (or all three).

The issue of some people still being in denial that Marti HASN'T, repeat HASN'T, had his squad (and its issues) somehow forced on him is now becoming actually quite weird.

He's certainly doing a 'hell' of a job based on what I saw today, and large parts of other recent games!

I know we can sometimes see games differently, but your assessment doesn't so much take the biscuit as run off with the whole tin! The fact that today's game doesn't seem to have come as a surprise to many is telling in itself.
