| News Comment | Southampton V Wolverhampton Wanderers The Verdict at 10:42:56
At the risk of stating the bleed**g obvious (again), the transfer policy has prioritised quantity over quality, just as it did in the relegation season. Nick, you used to talk up the fact that we have strength in depth, but being able to field two entirely different mediocre teams leads inevitably back to the Championship. I'm not even sure a replacement for RM can prevent this from happening, although his stubbornness means he has much to answer for. |
| News Comment | Southampton Board Split On Russell Martin Situation at 11:39:18
Of all the personnel to come on board in the SR era, Ankerson has to be the most disappointing. What he did with Brentford pretty much defied belief, meaning that I for one was more than pleased when he was appointed. Clearly whatever gifts he had have deserted him. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Bournemouth The Verdict at 10:34:25
A bloated squad of average ability has left us in a position where RM has no idea what his best side is. His 'apology' to Aribo for not playing him from the start clearly demonstrates this. Fewer players of a higher quality signed for the same outlay was so obviously the way to go. Instead of which, and just as an example, the manager seemed to think that signing Ryan Fraser was the final piece of the jigsaw, which says it all. Nothing against the wee man, but he did not represent an upgrade on what we already had. The same mistake was made in the relegation season, but the lesson wasn't learnt. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Brentford The Damning Verdict at 11:01:03
Given that players do not deliberately give the ball away in dangerous positions, the question becomes whether JS, JB and THB can have the errors coached out of them or, in other words, whether they are skilful enough to play the system. What we were able to get away with last season we are not good enough to do in the Prem. and other teams will exploit this weakness relentlessly. RM is proud and stubborn and I cannot see him compromising on his principles. We have the players we need, but not the manager to get the best out of them. |
| News Comment | Russell Martin Confirms No One Is Refusing To Play at 02:04:40
I may have missed it, but I don't recall any information appearing here regarding the position with Ross Stewart. Is he still injured? Is he likely to recover? Is he part of our future or not? |

| News Comment | Saints Set To Agree Deal With Keeper at 10:45:53
I think this serves only to demonstrate that the club's belief in Bazunu for the long term is unshakeable, meaning that there was never any point in spending big on a 'keeper who would only be number one for a single season. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Liverpool The FA Cup Verdict at 10:17:37
In 1976 our priority was promotion, but I seem to remember we gave it a good crack in the cup. I do not understand this obsession with promotion which, if achieved, will be followed by a season of misery, struggling at the bottom with relegation highly probable. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Millwall The Verdict at 13:55:35
Plenty of teams play a possession based game now - indeed the suggestion is that teams that don't are stuck in the dark ages, but no one ever said it had to be ponderous. Arsenal, to pick just one example out of many, are fluid and fast paced. They see no need to pass endlessly along the back line, allowing the opposition to get as well organised as they could possibly be, before venturing forward. In addition, whatever the sport, if you do the unexpected, the opposition can often be caught off guard. So yes, why not give the 'keeper licence to kick it long once in a while. There is nothing to be gained from being predictable and that, on Saturday, is exactly what we were. |
