You are right, but they are never achieved by those who don't have a certain level of expertise in the first place, |

If you read the original Portugese article , the English version takes a few liberties to spin the story. The strapline said "Southampton midfielder makes no secret of his desire to one day return to the club where he was trained" Fernandes was speaking about his gratitude to Sporting and said that he one day hopes to go back, the words "One Day" suggest not at the moment. I don't expect Fernandes to be here next season, but this story shows how the rumour mill works, it turns the context of words to mean something different. |

My point was this, compared to everyone slagging him off for, not for being a bad player, no one actually knows that yet, but for being injured for two years, he actually does have a "toweringly impressive record in professional football”. I would guess that none of us on here have actually played professional football at the same level as Stewart or been capped at International level. That being the case Stewart's opinion should be given some respect, I still laugh now when our fans used to call Jan Poortvliet clueless and knowing nothing about football when he had played in a World Cup final |

Taking your points 1. The congestion hasn't been as bad this season at least on the west side of the city, probably because so many leave early. 2. the Crowd was 28,900 about 3,000 short of capacity. 3. Im not sure that your point 5 is quite true, you say SR turned us from a well run family friendly club, they arrived after 3 years of Gao being unable to invest and getting stick from the fans, he had taken over from Katharina Liebherr who brought some stability but still got stick from the fans, before that it was Cortese running the show and nearly bankrupting the club again and putting up prices and not giving two hoots about the club or its supporters. Before that it was Wilde and his mob and Lowe etc who took over from the share scandal old board. When have we actually been a well run family friendly club ? Probably in the late 1970s would be my guess. |

An interesting comparison about hoe you feel that Fulham's owners know what is expected whilst ours are clowns. Shahid Khan took sole ownership of the club in July 2013, they were in the Premier League and relegated in his first season of ownership and would spent 4 seasons in the Championship before being promoted in 2018, relegated in 2019, promoted again in 2020, relegated again in 2021, promoted again in 2022 and ae now in their 3rd consecutive season in the Premier League. So perhaps we should have asked Shahid Khan on Saturday as he clearly must know what is required to compete at this level, he will also know how difficult it is these days and that instant success doesnt come easily and you have to be patient. Clubs with good owners get relegated, ask Leicester & Ipswich this season, or Stoke 6 years ago, clubs make mistakes and pay for them, but some clubs come back and some don't. We are becoming Spurs fans we seem to have a sense of entitlement and nothing is ever good enough for us. we are always the victims, always having to blame someone |

He has had 26 games in charge and took over a struggling side, 15 points out of 19 games and in free fall. He has gained 33 points, so a decent record, if not setting the world alight, Personally I think Hull will stay up, Preston are at Bristol City who need to stay in the play off places so will be looking to win. There are 5 clubs who could go down, I think Hull probably have the easiest game and Derby are at home to Stoke |

I actually agree with him, we will have the foundations of the squad that got us up last season still intact, we will have money from selling the likes of Ramsdale, Fernandes & Dibling who didn't play in our promotion and we can make some good loan signings. To be blunt he probably does think some of our fans are stupid, as his toweringly impressive record of games played in professional football including caps for Scotland is probably a lot more than the entire paying crowd on Saturday combined. I usually find that with football pundits, the more impressive the playing record, the more out of touch the comments. |

1. The fire drill after Fulham's winner, I can understand it from one point of view as it was gutting, but there was still 4 minutes left of injury time, those that stayed tried to rally the team, but against a backdrop of empty seats you could see the players had nothing to give. 2. A big message to the board about prices next season, roughly 3,000 short of a full house and that is perhaps being kind given the number of season ticket holders who didn't turn up. 3. Why do we not play Adam Lallana, Ryan Fraser & Charlie Taylor, ideal players in the final 20 minutes as we are trying to close out a game. 4. The Red Wall has lost it's initial passion, lots of empty seats now and no real vocal support, at best a bit sporadic and with no away fans to bounce off its all a bit flat. 5. No one seems to have any pride in the club, Ipswich fans have pride in theirs, so do Leicester, so why don't we. |

Its not working for Armstrong at West Brom, but he was proven a year ago in the Championship, so no reason why he can't do it next season. I would like to see a central midfield holding duo of Downes & Charles, so Charles would replace Ugochukwu. Edwards could replace any of our existing central defenders from what I have seen & hear of his performances at QPR. |

True no one is saying he is Premier League class, but Tall Paul has still only got 4 goals in the same 3 seasons. |

The team might something to be proud of, but the Club is, not the owners but the club itself, as I said Ipswich did not leave in droves last weekend when 3-0 down. Even 20 years ago when we were relegated going 3-0 down didn't trigger mass exits with 20 minutes to go. It is a modern invention, the so called 3 goal rule, same as made up cardboard signs asking for a players shirt, taking selfies of the game going on behind you, taking photographs of players taking corners. Call me old fashioned but I was brought up watching football when we stayed to the bitter end or at least till the final 5 minutes. I can understand a 20 year old storming out, it is all they know, but in 1994 at Norwich City as we sank towards relegation, and we went 3-1 down on the hour mark, no one stormed out and we eventually won 5-4 and stayed up. 1999 at home to Blackburn, 2-0 down on 38 minutes, 3-1 down on the hour minutes and Blackburn running the game and taking the p*ss everyone stayed and got behind the team and we got back to 3-3 and almost won it. Those were great games were the Spirit of Southampton did really exist back then, don't say now its about the owners, the manager and poor players, we had that in spades in 1999, Rupert Lowe, Dave Jones and the likes of El Khalej, Solvedt, Boa Morte, Mark Hughes, Stuart Ripley all underperforming. Things were different back then I accept that, but that does not make today's football right and the so called 3-0 rule is not something to be proud of. But don't worry I said all these things 2 years ago and then last May everyone turned up at Wembley and sang Southampton Till I Die, which this season should be Southampton till theyre 3 goals down. |

No we celebrate the fact that we support Southampton Football Club, owners come and go, but the football club remains the constant. Why not stop bitching about Goztepe and Sport Republic and take pride in ourselves rather than make ourselves a laughing stock as we slink out of St Mary's with 20 minutes to go and the visiting supporters singing "Is this a fire drill" |
 | Forum Reply | Reasons to Be Cynical at 10:22 22 Apr 2025
Im quite cynical about players kissing the badge etc, but thats football and has been for 40 years now. Footballers know it is a job they also know that the club they play for will dump them very quickly if they are not good enough so loyalty is based on if you are under contract. Look at Kevin De Bruyne in the paper moaning that after years of success at City they never offered him a new deal and he found out by a meeting with the DOF and no sign of Pep Guardiola, he realised then he was just a commodity. Another article on Trent Alexander-Arnold suggested that he had realised this when he was a kid when from 8 years old to 18 every April/May was a time of worry whether he would be retained and that he saw some of his best friends dumped callously along the way. Footballers are loyal to the clubs they are under contract to, they are still human, the adrenalin is pumping and when goals are scored a lot of pressure is released, watch a film about football where actors try to recreate players celebrating scoring or for that matter fans celebrating, you can see it is all fake. The celebrations are real, but only for that moment and the time they are under contract. If players didn't jump around then they would soon be slagged off by the fans for having no passion. |

Pat Thank you for taking the comments I made in a positive manner. Yes when Cortese was in charge the club was in disarray and I was banned from having a season tickets, no one was kicking off then and saying how badly the club were treating its fans and indeed players with Matt Le Tissier & Francis Benali banned from St Mary's, because the team was doing well. That is football fans all over, the only benchmark as to how a club is run is results on the field, but football is littered with clubs who have had moments of success and then it all collapses as it is built on sand, Pompey, Bradford, Oldham even West Ham who are again kicking off at the owners, after a couple of years of the team doing well, so all is forgotten for a while. Pat everyone oversteps the marks at times, my whole reply was not to disagree with your view, only to point out that in my opinion you were disrespecting others, I rarely have to remove a post on here and i never do just because i disagree. You are 100% right fortunes on the pitch dictate moods and at Wembley 11 months ago, no one was moaning about Sports Republic, we all thought we had turned a corner and we had, but we failed to react to Jason Wilcox's departure and have now paid the price. Truth is that even if we had kept him it would have been hard to stay up, look at Leicester & Ipswich, they love their owners, but ultimately they are in only a slightly better position than us, that is the nature of the Premier League now. |

Where in my original post have i said that the club is well run or stuck up for Sport Republic, most of my posts tend to try and give both perspectives, those who are blindly flying off abuse at SR in all directions are actually clouding the issue, in the grand scheme of things the fact that a couple of hundred bricks are blocked by a van or two is right at the bottom of the scale. Whose decision was it to put a chicken wings van in front of them ? certainly not Dragan Solak or Rasmus Ankersen, probably not even Phil Parsons. All people complaining at every little issue does it make those reading the comments wonder why every petty thing that happens at the club is slagged off by the fans. If you all feel so strongly about this, which you all clearly do, then why don't you all meet up on Saturday and form a human chain around the Chicken Wing van and prevent anyone getting to it, I am sure you will get the Echo down to take a photo and highlight just how badly the club is now run . It isn't going to happen though is it. |

The Chris Nicholl situation was not a simple matter, it stems from the Bob Higgins criminal convictions for abusing young players during the 1980's. when he was convicted it was claimed that those in charge of the club at the time were aware of the situation but ignored it, during most of that time Chris Nicholl was the manager, back when managers controlled the whole footballing side of things from the youth team up. When he died, the club chose not to do a tribute because they felt that this would draw attention to Nicholl and the media would drag it all up and this would be upsetting for his family at an awful time for him as it was . Now I am not saying hat what the club did was right, but they felt it was the best thing to do rather than risk the medial dragging his name through the dirt. This is not sticking up for Sport Republic, it is just telling it how it was, we did an interview with Alan Shearer, Neil Ruddock & one of those who was a victim back in 1991 (ish) and from what they said, the whole club knew what was happening and those in charge did nothing. I have mentioned this on several occasions, but the actual truth doesn't fit the narrative in this case |
