I totally and utterly agree. Additionally Marti should not have kept Ashby and Masden on the pitch after half-time. He should have asserted his authority at that stage. Their efforts were unacceptable. Dunne, Morgan, Smyth all had 45 minutes in them. [Post edited 12 Jan 12:14]

Totally reasonable as always. Fair reflections on the team, and keeps to himself what needs to be kept to himself. SE will not agree, |

Ashby's cover today would have been Ronnie Edwards who was playing his first full game for us. So it would be a big ask for Edwards to do Ashby's job for him as well as his own. I thought the match just showed that Ashby and several others aren't good enough. I said it 3 weeks ago after Preston. There is an unacceptable gulf in class in the squad. Field, Varane, Cook, Smyth, Kolli etc etc etc all good enough. Ashby, Celar, Madsen, Andersen, Santos, not good enough and need to go. [Post edited 11 Jan 19:33]

He visibly slows up when he gets near a challenge. There is simply no way that you can do that as a professional. He'd struggle enough on a Sunday morning with that mentality. He needs to find another, non-contact sport. |

He doesn't actually play in any competitive games. He doesn't play for the Devt Squad/U.21's or whatever they are called. Its always Salomon, Clark or one of the other U21 keepers. That needs to be fixed. [Post edited 11 Jan 16:11]

| Forum Thread | Championship refs not quite so bad after all at 21:46 10 Jan 2025
Jut watched the referee in the Villa Wet Spam Cup game gift Villa an equaliser by giving them a corner when one of their players clearly kicked it out, with nowhere near a touch from any West Ham player. Unbelievable refereeing. No wonder they need VAR up there. |
| Forum Reply | Sorry Paal at 22:44 8 Jan 2025
Wow, I thought Paal struggled big time on Monday against Chong (who I thought was excellent). Got beaten for pace quite a few times with it requiring a covering defender to stop Chong from being in in front of goal. Was evident that Paal can be beaten for pace (though as stated, Chong was very good). |

I agree with pretty much all of the above. Long and short of it is that I think Marti wants us to play a high tempo game with and without the ball. I imagine Madsen was bought on the grounds of being technically good, in the hope that that would translate to being technically good while being able to cover the ground and being combative to enable us to play the high tempo game in and out of position. I don't ever recall seeing a player going from being a playmaker to a dynamo at any time in their career so I think it's unlikely that Madsen will be a regular for us at any time. It's an interesting question. Has there ever been an example of a player who has gone from being a playmaker to a dynamo ? [Post edited 8 Jan 22:29]

I agree. Also the changes, when they happen, are taken on board by all and implemented across the board. On Monday, Edwards on at CDM then later to CB in a back three with first Ashby and Paal at wing backs and then Dunne and Paal, when JCS came on. And the introduction of Collback and Saito. Everyone fulfilled their roles excellently individually and collectively. The organisation is hugely impressive and it is going to put us in with a shot of getting something out of the game on Saturday. [Post edited 8 Jan 12:32]

I think Orient had Paul Smyth, Charlie Kelman and Steven Duke-McKenna at the same time. |

What I really like about Marti is that he clearly identifies what the opposition do and how we counter it in his post match conferences. I actually think a lot of it goes above quite a few of our heads (no names mentioned) but its clear that he does his homework and that it can reap benefits. I only attend games at LR but it seems to me that most teams are predictable. The likes of Oxford, Preston, Watford etc. you can imagine their managers telling their players how it's going to be, and apart from the introduction of a quick striker in the second half they just plough on the same. I like Marti. He makes changes in formation during games if necessary - e.g. change to 5 at the back, trying two strikers now and again, moving Field to CB if he needs to get a more attacking CM on. He is a thinking man's coach. [Post edited 3 Jan 15:13]

The midfield three complement each other well plus its good the way Morgan has the security of Field and Varane if he loses possession. That said, his decision making is pretty good and his mobility and desire to run into unchartered territory gives him a clear edge over Madsen. |

True. I also thought Kolli went head to head with them very well and won good free kicks. Credit to the attacking players for giving us good as they got. Real courage through our team today. [Post edited 1 Jan 18:04]

For the second home game in succession we've played a team who have been markedly bigger than us, who thought they could kick us off the ball, but who we have stood up to and fought our corner against. So well done Marti and all the players (especially the smaller ones) for punching above your weight. Maybe if Paul Heckingbottom and Tom Cleverly spent less time training their players to kick out and then fall over then they might be a bit better at defending soft goals. |
