It’s another example of how the Tories are screwed. They’ve no attack lines as things still often come back to them. |

It’s only mild racial stereotyping at worst. Which according to you is fine. |

It seems to have become the norm for both sides to focus on the negative, whether past or present. Much better off celebrating things like this: |

On reflection it’s probably to difficult to do. We all bring our experience to these things. I don’t know of anyone who has had a negative experience with trans people so that’s probably colouring my thinking. Do you think on a Saturday night a single female would be more likely to experience a negative event in a trans club or a straight club? |

There’s definitely waste but I’d say DEI is down that list. Procurement at the top is where it’s starts, along with internal systems in a myriad of areas. I’d like to see the figures on how much diversity and equality officers save. There’s complying with legal duties for a start, stopping getting sued. We have a government keen to get the long term sick back work. Equality officers have a big role to play in this. The public sector is struggling to recruit in some areas as the private sector is leading the way in flexible working. Again, Equality officers can really help with this (particularly in regard to getting parents of young children into work. Unfortunately due to powerful media outlets. DEI is seen as advancing quotas and mixed sex toilets, in reality it’s looking after all protected characteristics- women, the disabled, the elderly etc. |

Great post. This judgement will protect women and their rights in a variety of different ways but as you said, we’re talking about the behaviour of a tiny minority making it difficult for all. The debate has become poisonous for all sides, including the vast majority of trans people who just want to get on with their lives. Ask the females in your life how many times they’ve been made to feel uncomfortable by a trans woman, then ask the same question about straight men. As I said, this judgment is important and I hope it’ll take some of the heat out of the discussion in time. Hopefully it’ll pan out like years ago when people linked homosexuality to paedophillia. Most have grown out of thinking like that now and I hope this will be the same with those trans people who are just wrestling with themselves and not trying to change reality for others. |

I completely agree with you about the savings/pensions. It’s the WFA I was on about, which was incredibly poorly set out. It should have been means tested but I stand by thinking there are millions who didn’t need it. Same argument with child benefit. You rightly (imo) don’t get when you earn over x amount. As for the teacher pension, although it’s nothing like as good as it was, it’s still a fantastic benefit. If anything, it’s a bit too back loaded and isn’t keeping people in the profession. They’d be better off slimming it down and improving wages - this would help get people in in the first place. I can’t tell you how hard it is to get teachers at the moment. I also would say that 47 years is an extreme example and not really feasible, especially if you’re a Reception teacher - crawling around role play areas at 69 isn’t much fun! Look at the fuss when the try and tax the rich? Look what happened with the farmers (yes, I know there are some poor ones) , and the winter fuel allowance for pensioners (yes, I know many struggle but as a group, they are the wealthiest in the country). |

I like the way you’ve put that - really helpful 👍 |

The only thing I struggle with is the fact that those ages can pay tax and then can’t vote. Other than that I don’t think it makes sense at all. [Post edited 13 Apr 17:26]

Because they’re offering things the others aren’t. The fact they think they’re promising unicorns is neither here nor there. Labour are pushing on with the 16 year voter thing thing that’ll bite them on the bum if they’re not careful. Who to you think politically unaware, impressionable kids who are drawn to populism are going to vote for? [Post edited 13 Apr 17:10]
