He was a good lad but my God he was an absolutely awful footballer. 3 goals in 73 appearances for us and 1 in 26 even when back at Standard Liege. And didn't we give him a new contract??! I am not sure that he was ever in control of the ball for more than about 5 seconds. A good lad though!...wish him well!... |

No, this ignores the history. The principles of democracy and liberalism provided the moral justification and energy for the liberation of power away from hereditary monarchs and other autocrats and (more) into the hands of the people. Those principles then found concrete form in the constitutions and laws of those democracies and reflected too in such ideals of an independent judiciary and a free press. These things are not a cover for oligarchs to take power. You can tell that the oligarchs are trying to take power when they try to undermine them and... commit crimes interfere in elections try to side-step constitutions publicly pressurise judges; and claim that the truths revealed by the free press are 'fake news'. Your world is upside down, my friend. |

He's not a 'bogeyman'. But he neither is he a democrat nor interested in the the citizens of the US. He is interested in himself and maintaining his ego. Like so many warehouses before him. You do not believe in the principles of democracy, liberalism or the rule of law, so you don't care that he does not play by the rules. I do. If I've been conned by the clever lizards, so be it. I thought that the US constitution would be more robust than that of the Weimar republic, but I am no longer so sure. |

I don't want to be a party pooper, it was great to see a win and it was a dominant performance, but I'm drawing no longer term positive conclusions from that game. We can't play like that against PL opposition without getting spanked, so I'll wait to see if Juric can come up with a formula that works in the league before I start thinking more positively about either him or Sullemana. |

First point. That's just my feel for it. Second point. So much of this is driven from the US. Trump's attempt at a coup, his disregard for the rule of law and his obvious attraction to Putin and other depots is sufficient for me. You know he just wants to be king and, more worryingly, so do many of the fools who support him. Yes, sometimes people choose a right wing government and then that government suspends the constitution and replaces it with a dictatorship. 'never ending Gay pride promotion'. I don't know what it's like down your way, but my experience is that Gay pride is once a year. Is that what you mean my 'never ending'? Was one year enough? Does the same apply to Christmas and Easter? How does wokery pokery benefit the ruling oligarchs? |

I disagree. But I take politicians as I find them, and we're all entitled to distrust whoever we like and vote accordingly. |

At some point 'political correctness gone mad' transformed into 'woke' and in the process rather than just the extreme examples of anti-prejudice and diversity being criticised, the whole progressive agenda came under threat. It was a clever move. 'Woke' is a handy punchy label which appeals to people who like things simple. What is also not widely understood is that this whole anti-woke agenda is being pushed by a distinctly right-wing, reactionary special interest. People who prefer a more elitist, authoritarian agenda than a diverse, democratic, egalitarian one. Trump is not a man of the people, neither is Farage, they are simply selling snake oil to the people because they want to be in power. It's what all populists do. And yes those people seem to be winning at the moment, but as long as democracy can survive, I think this will be a blip, an adjustment, and the fundamental forces which have tended societies towards liberalism and the rights of each individual to authentic self-expression regardless of sex, gender, race or age will win out in the end. |

Didn't Moyes say that he wanted a return to management but didn't want a relegation fight? I think he's going to be tempting fate big time going back to Everton having said that! |

Selling Ramsdale in January would be waving the white flag. It's the sort of idiotic 'outside the box' thinking that this bunch of muppets might find attractive. And, yes, there's a certain autistic logic to it: we've going to get relegated so let's cut our losses now. But football can't work like that. Every team has to try until the final game. It's in the nature of a league. And it's self-respect. And then there's the 'contract' with the fans. No club can expect support if it is not at least trying to succeed. I think I'd be asking for my season money back for breach of contract. |

They had one plan for staying up - Russell Martin. They should have sacked him after 8 games and really made an effort to survive. Instead they stuck with him until we were well adrift and then appointed someone with no PL experiene as a final half-hearted roll of the dice. Their plan failed and they had/have no Plan B or this season. Frankly, there is no point in us spending big now. We'll limp to the end of the season. Get relegated with a laughable points total and Juric will be sacked. And only then can the Club try to re-group. Hopefully without the current bunch of muppets making the decisions. |

i guess the essential conflict here is that for us, success is measured by what happens to Saints, whereas for SR it will be the overall success of the group that will be their priority. And these two things will not always align. |

You did also seem to be critical of them for failing to live in peace with their neighbours for 4000 years. FWIW, it also leaves me cold that the Israeli state is behaving so barbarically. You are right, we would hope that Isreal would do better. My take is that it's this particular bunch of psychopaths who are responsible. Not Jews, not zionists, not Israel per se. But it is very difficult to maintain these distinction when the support for Isreal from many Jewish people seems without limit and when any criticism of what Isreal is doing is considered to be anti-semitic. |

Zionism was a movement for state for Jewish people, and that state was created after WW2. I'm aware of the history. Rightly or wrongly, it was a done deal long before most of us on here were even born. I would say that the reasonable view now is that Israel has a right to exist but that it should not be expanding (more that it has already done so) and it should be recognising the rights of its Palestinian neighbour and citizens. |

Sounds like you're quite anti-Jewish though. (Which is what 'anti-semitic' usually means.) |

Or I can offer you Dad's Army (film) on ITV or When Holidays Go Horribly Wrong on C5. |

Although isn't it true that they got Nathan Jones out quicker than the Board would have done. Based on the Martin experience, Jones had another 7 games in him at least! |

Please read what I said. I am aware of the differences. "...you are getting too close to talking about Jews for my liking." 'too close'. You could research the history of how the use of 'zionist' as a pejorative term has been used by the far right as shorthand for 'Jewish'. Just like how David Icke talks about lizards. (Is he still doing that, Jelly?) What is clear is that this is a minefield. Hence my preference for not using the word 'zionist' when we are really talking about Israel. This Israeli government are behaving abominably. As far as I am concerned they are up there will some of the worst states ever seen in terms of what they are doing and their disregard for Palestinian life. |
