Ed Miliband - Energy companies 13:09 - Sep 26 with 14318 views | Charlie1 | I admired the speach and stir he's actually created. Energy companies have been ripping us all off for far to long. He's right to raise and challenge although I'm not sure in such a draconian style. He's made a statement - fine just think it's too far. He could have made the same splash but just differently. I'm not sure his proposals work although it is right to challenge the energy firms. But, this current labour regime: 1) I can't take Ed Miliband seriously. His voice is just a joke! 2) Ed Balls is one of the most dangerous men on the planet. A loon. That guy in charge of the exchequeor is frightening.

Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 13:21 - Sep 26 with 9733 views | BlackCrowe | Unfortunately he's gone for the soundbite that on the face of it is difficult to dislike. Yes, who wouldn't want fixed energy prices? However the impact on the economy of disengaged-deciding-to-go-elsewhere-energy companies is considerable. 5% got wiped off their share-price yesterday - that's huge and I bet many of us are indirectly their shareholders through pension schemes, ISAs, etc without realising it. It could also have a massive impact on outside investment in the UK. Milliband is sending a signal of near-renationalisation. He even said in a post-conference interview that he'd like to renationaise the Post Office and the railways. A hard shift to 70s socialism and we are truly fcked. He's clearly clueless but whoever his advisors are - they need shooting. And as for lowering the voting age to 16, words fail me...

Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 13:30 - Sep 26 with 9695 views | HollowayRanger | all the companies will do is raise prices before election by say 20% to cover the price freeze or wait until after the price freeze and raise them by 30% also we will only have 2% spare capacity come 2015 unless more is spend upgrading our grid ,a price freeze would kill that off and turn out the lights!

I'm open to offers for my vote.

Speaking as someone who had direct dealings with Ed Balls over the Children, Schools and Families Bill I can only say that his ineptitude makes Gove look positively Churchillian in comparison.

Typical that they say this now that they aren't in control of it. They had 12 years to do this but they chose not to.... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 13:55 - Sep 26 with 9601 views | gueRRilla | I think its long overdue tbh. Energy prices are sky high and without any legitimate cause. Talk of 'upstream' investments in infrastructure are to a large degree, bullshit. These companies pay out hundreds of millions a year in dividends to shareholders while continuously blaming rising prices on rising energy costs. The UK public are getting fleeced in comparison to other Europeans. I'm in no way a fan of Miliband, and I hope to god he doesn't end up as PM, but I think its about time someone stood up to these companies.

"also we will only have 2% spare capacity come 2015 unless more is spend upgrading our grid ,a price freeze would kill that off and turn out the lights!" This is a problem we already have under the present government, although the last government could've done a lot more to avoid it. Using this argument against Labour's proposed energy price freeze overlooks the fact that Cameron has been unable to agree reach agreement with EDF over pricing for the proposed Hinckley C nuclear reactor. There is stalement. My dozy MP (a Conservative) glibly says that we "only" need to build 20 reactors to address climate change issues whilst ensuring a good supply of electricity. The small fly in the ointment is that the fastest a reactor has been built in the UK is seven years. RFA

Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 14:00 - Sep 26 with 9592 views | jonno | Couple of things; The UK has the CHEAPEST Gas prices in the whole of Europe. And is in the cheapest three countries for electricity. You can fix your energy prices now for the next two or more years - so what Red Ed is saying means nothing. He's simply going for the populist vote as he is desperate. There is huge investment required in our energy infrastructure - due to successive governments totally failing to invest over many years - which the energy industry is investing in and will continue to do so. That will stop if they are forced to sell gas and electricity at a loss as Miliband wants.
Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 14:01 - Sep 26 with 9589 views | loftus77 | For me, this move is of a desperate party that now knows it can't win in 2015 and is simply looking to scoop up votes to try and finish a clsoe second. Labour's programme, as ever, is well-intentioned but their problem in a nutshell is THAT quote from Alan Greenspan i.e. "it's the economy, stupid." Miliband and Balls know that the economy is going to improve from now until 2015 so the Tories' obvious election message '"Labour broke it, we fixed it, here are the stats to prove it" will always be powerful amongst dumb floating voters. They now need to take a risk hence this week's announcement. If the economy reamained in the doldrums, we'd have seen none of this energy-freezing stuff from Ed this week IMHO.
Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 14:09 - Sep 26 with 9570 views | ak68 | This policy is a blunt response to the rises in fuel costs partly forced up by the push for expensive renewables. If we encouraged fracking the price of gas would collapse in the UK or we could build more storage facilities that could hold cheap summer fuel. These are long term solutions and not an election gimmick. The saving to consumers is based on a presumption that prices will rise by a certain amount during the short period from the election to the start of 2017. It ignores any extra costs that may be front-loaded before then and any catch-up costs after 2017 probably negating any benefit. This price freeze could end up holding prices up when they naturally should be falling. That would be ironic.

Why is it dumb to compare the economy when labour got kicked out to where we are/will be in 2015 under this govt?

There's not much of a well to dry up mate in terms of energy prices. Do you know how much profit British Gas/Centrica makes each year from it's energy customers? No - I bet you don't, so I'll tell you. It's around £4. That's all, £4 per customer, per year. Most of the profit Centrica makes is in it's upstream business (gas exploration etc.) and in the USA. Not from domestic energy customers.

If you cap their bonuses then the basic pay will rise. Bonuses can be clawed back fairly easily when circumstances dictate. The basic wage packet can't. Capping the bonuses therefore is a false economy, don't let the fact that it involves the panto villain bankers blind you to that.

Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 14:36 - Sep 26 with 9519 views | PhilmyRs | You get into power by trying to be more like your opposition, and less like your past. 10 years later the opposition get (partially) into power by trying to be more like you, and less like their past. You respond by trying to be more like your old past and less like your opposition...and so it begins. If there’s any lessons to learn from the last 40 years, it’s that people don’t like it if you seem to move too far in one direction (there’s a joke in there somewhere), be it left or right. Personally it feels like it did when the Conservatives were out of office post Major. Initially they threw themselves on the defensive right wing bandwagon with their ‘save the pound’ calls, whilst their time under IDS was pretty embarrassing, with the quiet man turning up the volume for the Right. The same thing, but obviously on opposite ends of the scale, seems to be happening with Labour. It takes time to work out how to be an effective opposition, what it takes to win an election. Labour are still learning, they think it’s fashionable to position themselves on the left, history tells us this doesn’t prove successful in UK General Elections.
Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 14:38 - Sep 26 with 9513 views | doogi55 | i dont disagree with bonuses for bankers it not the buisness of the goverment to defend the bankers they can do that themselves .energy companies dont make money but paid £5 millon bonus to there ceo.and the investment in companies still seems quite high. i was making the point about trying to bribe the voters with policys. someone also said about votes for 16 yrs old while going on about how can you vote ed he has a funny voice
Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 14:39 - Sep 26 with 9511 views | ElHoop | Miliband looks a complete dick but he's dangerous. He turned over his brother to get the Unions to vote for him in the leadership election and since then he's turned over the unions. Getting flak from the energy companies won't do him any harm either. He's certainly far more capable than Clegg.

He said he couldn't take him seriously because of his voice, not that it would stop him voting for him. I'm the same with Hague, sounds like Gary Barlow on downers.

Ed Miliband - Energy companies on 14:52 - Sep 26 with 3612 views | Phildo | it is a prices policy. If he does it to the bad guy energy companies why not to everyone else. Tried by labour and Tories in the 70s and eventually gave us Maggie. No one has really cracked how to control corporations while not trying to buck the market. If you try and fix a market speculators/capitalists bet against your break point. I would be going for much harder anti monopoly rules myself and trying to force the likes of BP Tesco etc into smaller units who compete and keep the market honest because we seem to have ended up with some sort of corporate communism. Politicians seem to have no control at all.
